There are 44 numbered free bag projects in the current American Patchwork & Quilting/AllPeopleQuilt roundup, ranging from small zippered pouches and scrappy totes to purses, messenger bags, backpacks, and two projects that modify an existing tote. The collection is especially useful for quilters because many designs use quilting cotton, patchwork, fat quarters, charm squares, strips, batting, and interfacing.
One important qualification: free does not mean every download is a full-size tiled pattern or unrestricted for commercial use. Some pages provide written instructions and diagrams; others include a foundation pattern, corner-cutting template, or specific pattern pieces. Check the individual project page before cutting. The roundup was updated February 13, 2026, and this link audit was checked August 9, 2026. Open the current 44 Free Bag Patterns roundup.
What is actually included in the 44-pattern roundup?
The roundup is a curated sewing and quilting collection, not a directory of every free bag pattern online. Its numbered list contains 44 projects; the introduction’s reference to more than 50 ideas conflicts with the visible numbering from 01 of 44 through 44 of 44. The count below follows the numbered collection.
Most entries are complete bag constructions, but not all are standalone bags. Spring to Life Tote decorates a purchased canvas tote, and Quilt Block Tote covers the logo on an existing reusable cloth bag. Linked Together includes a matching watchband as well as a small bag, while Take-Along Duo makes two zippered bags.

Quick chooser: all 44 projects at a glance
Use the tables to narrow the collection by bag type, finished dimensions, available fabric, closure, or construction feature. A dash means the supplied project information does not give a comparable detail; read the linked page before buying materials. Dimensions are finished sizes, and several exclude handles or straps.

Best low-hardware projects for a first bag
The publisher does not assign a consistent difficulty rating, so the following are editorial estimates based on the listed construction features, not official skill levels.
- Market Bag: a practical patchwork tote using 5-in. squares, lining, batting, muslin, and handles. It avoids the hardware-heavy features found in several purses.
- Reusable Market Bag: a useful 15 × 15½ × 5-in. size with a pocket and straps, but still without a zipper or specialized closure.
- Sew & Stow: a particularly approachable choice if you want a reusable shopping bag and do not want to quilt it; the instructions specify no batting. You will need hook-and-loop tape.
- Sew Simple Purse: a two-fabric purse with purchased handles rather than a complicated strap or ring assembly. It does use ½-in. seams and purchased bag handles.
- Market Fresh Tote: a compact 11½ × 13 × 3-in. tote with a pocket and boxed corners. It is a good fit for a sewist who is comfortable with lining and interfacing.
Small-project caveat: the Simple Zippered Pouch and Mini Log Cabin Bag use less fabric, but neither is automatically easier. The pouch requires zipper insertion and binding; the Mini Log Cabin Bag requires accurate small-scale patchwork.
Best choices for fat quarters, charm squares, and scraps
- Fat quarters: start with Market Fresh Tote, Easy-Sew Purse, or Mini Log Cabin Bag. Confirm the cutting chart before assuming a particular number of fat quarters will work with your fabric’s usable width.
- 5-in. squares or charm squares: the clearest matches are Mini Log Cabin Bag, Market Bag, and Pieced Sewing Wristlet.
- General scraps: choose Floral Strips Bag, Scrappy Strips Bag, Shore Thing, or Log Cabin Tote Bag. Floral Strips and Scrappy Strips use a muslin foundation, while Log Cabin Tote uses mirror-image Log Cabin blocks.
- Precut 2½-in. strips: Patchwork Strips Tote Bag is the direct match, although it also calls for rickrack, eyelets, a button, webbing, batting, and heavyweight interfacing.
- Canvas: Canvas Tote Bag uses cotton canvas and a contrasting print. Spring to Life Tote starts with a purchased 16-in. canvas tote rather than making the bag body.
- An existing reusable tote: choose Quilt Block Tote for a pieced, quilted, bound logo cover, or Spring to Life Tote for appliqué decoration.
Zippered pouches and compact zipper practice
For a first zipper project, the Zip It! project is the most direct choice. The Simple Zippered Pouch makes a 9½ × 6¾ × 1-in. quilted pouch and specifies a 10-in. zipper. The Pieced Sewing Wristlet adds patchwork, interfacing, and a gingham ribbon handle.
For more than one finished item, Take-Along Duo makes two bags from double-face prequilted fabric. Plan for both a 14-in. zipper and a 9-in. zipper. Pieced Polka Dot Pouch is the fabric-forward option for assorted polka dots, but consult its current page for the exact closure and dimensions rather than assuming it matches the other pouches.

Structured totes, pockets, and quilted construction
Choose a project according to how much body you want the finished bag to have:
Rank #2
- PATTERN S9310 SIZING: Simplicity one-size pattern includes totes, bags, and pouches designed for a comfortable, adjustable fit. Check the finished measurements on the envelope before cutting so your make turns out just right.
- IN THE ENVELOPE: Printed tissue pattern pieces and clear step-by-step illustrated sewing instructions guide you from start to finish. The envelope also lists the suggested fabrics and the notions you need, so you can shop for materials with confidence.
- AMERICAN SEWING HERITAGE: An American sewing icon since 1927 and proudly made in the USA, Simplicity has been trusted by home sewists for nearly a century for accurate, easy-to-follow sewing patterns.
- MAKE IT UNIQUELY YOURS: Create custom pieces using your favorite fabrics, prints, trims, and embellishments. Personalize your bag to reflect your style, or use the cover photos as inspiration for handmade makes that are truly your own.
- EASY AND REWARDING TO SEW: A satisfying sewing project for beginner and intermediate sewists, perfect for everyday carry, travel, organizing, gifting, and craft fairs.
- Light structure: interfacing or thin batting is enough for projects such as Market Fresh Tote, Mini Log Cabin Bag, and Reusable Market Bag.
- Quilted structure: batting combined with muslin or lining appears in projects including Market Bag, Split Decisions Tote, Shore Thing, and Quilted Tote Bag.
- Firm structure: Crafty Tote uses fusible fleece, heavyweight stabilizer, and a corrugated-plastic bottom; All-Day Anywhere Tote uses heavyweight fusible stabilizer; and Large Patchwork Bag combines lightweight fusible interfacing with stiff interfacing.
For organization, look first at Quilted Tote Bag, which has exterior and interior pockets; Hold Anything Tote, a roomy 16 × 14 × 4-in. project tote; or Large Patchwork Bag, which has two pockets and a magnetic snap. The Patchwork and Prairie Points Bag has a deep outer pocket but an open top, while Cinch It Tote Bag uses a casing, pull-up straps, and grommets.
For beach or shopping use, compare the large Fish School Tote Bag, Sunny Beach Tote, Shore Thing, Market Bag, or the canvas-based Canvas Tote Bag. The materials suggest different levels of body and handling, but they do not constitute a tested load rating or guarantee of washability.
Purses, shoulder bags, and hands-free designs
Messenger Bag is the straightforward shoulder-bag choice, with lining, fusible fleece, a 7-in. zipper, and hook-and-loop closures. For a compact travel bag, Tropical Traveler—the current page is On-the-Go Bag—finishes at 7¼ × 9 in. excluding its strap.
Back & Forth is reversible and closes with ties. Its stated ¼-in. seam allowance and any downloadable foundation or pattern pieces should be checked before cutting. Striking Stripes Purse is a more hardware-oriented option with an adjustable strap, O-rings, a magnetic snap, a covered button, interfacing, and fusible fleece.
For specialized construction, Quick-Change Purse combines a removable contents pouch with synthetic leather, clear heavyweight vinyl, brad rings, interfacing, and a magnetic snap. Linked Together is the most unusual entry: the 4½ × 6-in. bag is paired with a leather-cord watchband designed to wrap three times around a 7-in.-diameter wrist.
For a more traditional patchwork purse, compare Easy-Sew Purse, which the roundup calls Sew Easy Purse, with Sew Simple Purse. The former uses four fat quarters across the body, lining, and closures plus batting, muslin, buttons, and circular handles. The latter is a simple two-fabric design with purchased bag handles and a finished size of 20 × 9 in. without handles.
Backpacks, children’s bags, and upcycling
- Striped Backpack: the current page for Stylish Backpack. At 14 × 20 × 7 in., it is one of the largest designs, but it is also among the most technique-heavy: exterior pocket, drawstring, adjustable straps, grommets, D-rings, triglides, and hook-and-loop tape.
- Handmade Backpack: a simpler-looking 18 × 15½-in. backpack or book bag using two fabrics and 3 yd. of ⅜-in. cotton rope. The cord and intended user should be considered before making it for a young child.
- Kid’s Carryall: a 9 × 9 × 3-in. child-sized bag with triangle-squares, lining, batting, handles, and a cardboard base.
- Spring to Life Tote: a customization project, not a complete tote pattern. Start with a purchased 16-in. canvas tote and add appliqué.
- Quilt Block Tote: another upcycling project. It covers the logo of an existing reusable cloth tote with a pieced, quilted, bound block and refers to a Roof Foundation Pattern.
Hardware guide: choose before you shop
Lower-hardware options
For the fewest purchased notions, look at Market Bag, Sew Simple Purse, Sew & Stow, Floral Strips Bag, Scrappy Strips Bag, and Handmade Backpack. This does not mean they require fabric alone: handles, rope, lining, interfacing, batting, or a simple closure may still be necessary. Handmade Backpack requires cotton rope, and Sew & Stow requires hook-and-loop tape.
Rank #3
- PATTERN S9517 SIZING: Simplicity one-size pattern includes totes, bags, and pouches designed for a comfortable, adjustable fit. Check the finished measurements on the envelope before cutting so your make turns out just right.

Projects with zippers
Simple Zippered Pouch uses a 10-in. zipper; Take-Along Duo uses 14-in. and 9-in. zippers; Messenger Bag uses a 7-in. zipper; and Trim It Tote, Pieced Sewing Wristlet, and Zip It! are also zipper projects. Buy the specified length first—substituting a different length can change the cutting dimensions and construction order.
Projects with snaps, rings, or grommets
Quick-Change Purse uses brad rings and a magnetic snap. Striking Stripes Purse uses O-rings, a magnetic snap, and a covered button. Large Patchwork Bag and Paisley & Print Patchwork Bag use magnetic snaps. Trim It Tote uses a zipper and D-rings. Cinch It Tote Bag uses grommets, and Striped Backpack adds grommets, D-rings, triglides, hook-and-loop tape, and a drawstring.
Other closures
Back & Forth uses ties; Patchwork and Prairie Points Bag is open at the top; and Sew & Stow uses hook-and-loop tape for its rolled form. The material list for each project page is the authority for exact sizes and quantities.
Stabilizer, batting, and structure: do not skip this check
Bag photographs can make a design look interchangeable with another, but the support materials affect sewing difficulty, body, weight, and the way the finished bag holds its shape. Before cutting, identify whether the pattern calls for:
- Batting: common in quilted totes and patchwork bags, including Split Decisions Tote, Market Bag, Shore Thing, and the Kid’s Carryall.
- Fusible fleece: used for padded or more substantial structure, including Crafty Tote, Messenger Bag, and Striking Stripes Purse.
- Medium- or lightweight interfacing: used to support fabric without making the entire bag rigid, as in Reusable Market Bag, Market Fresh Tote, and several purses.
- Heavyweight stabilizer or stiff interfacing: important for structured projects such as Crafty Tote, All-Day Anywhere Tote, Large Patchwork Bag, and Paisley & Print Patchwork Bag.
- A rigid insert: Crafty Tote uses corrugated plastic for the bottom; Kid’s Carryall uses cardboard.
- Specialty materials: Quick-Change Purse uses clear heavyweight vinyl and synthetic leather; other projects use canvas, webbing, cotton rope, leather cord, grommets, or purchased handles.
Do not replace a specified stabilizer casually. A softer substitute may make the bag easier to sew but can change the finished dimensions, pocket behavior, and ability of the bag to stand up.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fabric width and seam allowances matter
Yardage is not interchangeable between patterns. Some projects assume 42 in. of usable width, while others specify 42-in. or 44/45-in.-wide cotton. Canvas, vinyl, webbing, and stabilizer also have different usable widths and handling requirements.
- Market Fresh Tote: uses a 42-in. usable fabric width and ¼-in. seam allowances.
- Sew Simple Purse: specifies 42-in. cotton fabric and ½-in. seam allowances.
- Striped Backpack: uses 42-in. fabric and generally uses ½-in. seam allowances except where noted.
- Back & Forth: uses ¼-in. seam allowances.
These examples are enough to show why you should not apply one assumed seam allowance to the entire roundup. Read the individual cutting instructions, confirm the fabric width on the bolt, and account for directional prints, nap, shrinkage, and unusable selvage before purchasing yardage.

Are these full-size printable patterns?
No—not necessarily. The safest description is free project instructions and downloadable pattern pieces where provided.
Recommended Free Tools
Some downloads are primarily instruction sheets with cutting measurements and diagrams. The Market Fresh Tote PDF, for example, is a four-page instruction sheet with measurements and diagrams rather than a complete tiled, full-scale pattern.
Other projects provide a limited template. The Market Bag page refers to a Corner Cutting Pattern; Quilt Block Tote refers to a Roof Foundation Pattern; and Back & Forth refers to downloadable pattern or foundation material. Print only the supplied pieces at the scale specified by that project. Never assume that a PDF containing instructions also contains full-size pattern sheets.
How to download and use a project safely
- Open the main roundup or use the individual links above.
- Choose by intended use, finished size, available fabric, closure, or technique—not just by the photograph.
- Open the individual project page. The roundup description may not include every material, template, or construction warning.
- Record the finished size and note whether handles or straps are excluded.
- Read the complete materials list. Check batting, fleece, interfacing, stabilizer, stiffener, plastic, cardboard, vinyl, canvas, webbing, rope, zippers, snaps, rings, grommets, and handles.
- Use the page’s Download this Project, Download the Pattern, or equivalent link.
- Determine what the file contains: complete pattern pieces, a foundation, a corner template, selected pattern pieces, or written instructions and diagrams.
- Confirm fabric width and seam allowance before cutting.
- Print only supplied pattern pieces at the project’s stated scale. If the instructions give measurements, use those measurements rather than expecting a tiled pattern.
- Keep the original PDF and follow its personal-use and redistribution terms.
What does free mean here?
The project downloads are available without a stated purchase price, but that does not make them public-domain patterns. The Market Fresh Tote PDF specifies personal-use downloading and prohibits electronic or printed reproduction without written permission.
Accordingly, do not redistribute the PDFs, repost the instructions, or describe the patterns as unrestricted commercial-use resources. The supplied evidence does not establish that finished bags made from every project may automatically be sold. If you intend to sell finished items, seek permission from the rights holder or check the terms for the specific project.

Difficulty guide: an honest editorial estimate
AllPeopleQuilt does not provide a consistent difficulty scale across these 44 projects. The following grouping is based on construction features and required supplies, not an official rating.
Likely lower-barrier choices
Sew Simple Purse, Market Bag, Reusable Market Bag, Sew & Stow, and Market Fresh Tote are sensible starting points. Choose Simple Zippered Pouch or Mini Log Cabin Bag if you already have the relevant skill—zipper insertion for the former, small patchwork for the latter.
Best Value
- David & Charles Books-The Bag Making Bible
Likely intermediate or technique-heavy choices
Split Decisions Tote, Crafty Tote, Striped Backpack, Linked Together, Quick-Change Purse, Large Patchwork Bag, Trim It Tote, Take-Along Duo, and Cinch It Tote Bag involve combinations of patchwork, multiple layers, structured interfacing, vinyl or synthetic leather, specialty hardware, zippers, strap assemblies, or unusual construction. They are not impossible first bags, but they are poor choices if you want a quick project with ordinary quilting cotton and no hardware.
Choose by your actual goal
| If you want… | Start with… | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| The fastest simple tote | Market Bag, Reusable Market Bag, or Sew & Stow | These prioritize straightforward carrying over heavy structure or specialized features. |
| A small first project | Simple Zippered Pouch, Mini Log Cabin Bag, or Scrappy Strips Bag | Small does not always mean easy; zipper work and tiny patchwork can be demanding. |
| Fat-quarter stash | Market Fresh Tote, Easy-Sew Purse, or Mini Log Cabin Bag | Check lining, batting, interfacing, and usable-width requirements. |
| Charm squares | Mini Log Cabin Bag, Market Bag, or Pieced Sewing Wristlet | Patchwork accuracy affects the final shape. |
| Hands-free carrying | Messenger Bag, Striped Backpack, or Tropical Traveler/On-the-Go Bag | Straps, closures, and hardware add construction time. |
| Beach or market use | Fish School Tote, Sunny Beach Tote, Market Bag, Shore Thing, or Canvas Tote Bag | Finished size and fabric support vary; do not infer a tested load rating. |
| A structured professional look | Crafty Tote, Large Patchwork Bag, or All-Day Anywhere Tote | Heavy stabilizer, stiff interfacing, fleece, or a rigid insert adds bulk and handling work. |
| Minimal sewing plus upcycling | Spring to Life Tote or Quilt Block Tote | You must supply an existing tote; these are modifications, not complete bag builds. |
| Zipper practice | Simple Zippered Pouch, Zip It!, Take-Along Duo, or Messenger Bag | Check the exact zipper length and whether the design also requires lining or binding. |
| A child’s gift | Kid’s Carryall or Handmade Backpack | Check the finished scale, cord, cardboard, and hardware for the intended child. |
Why use this curated list instead of a giant directory?
Broader roundups can be useful for discovery. SewCanShe’s 89-pattern collection offers more category navigation, while SewingSupport’s 1,200-plus directory emphasizes breadth. FaveCrafts and Needlepointers also separate bags into useful broad categories.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe advantage of this AllPeopleQuilt collection is different: it is a defined set of 44 linked projects from a quilting-oriented archive. The individual pages often include materials, cutting information, finished size, diagrams, designers, and downloadable files. The disadvantage is that the roundup itself does not provide consistent filters, difficulty ratings, materials summaries, or a clear distinction between full patterns and limited templates. The chooser above supplies those missing decision points without treating editorial estimates as publisher ratings.
Before you cut: a five-minute checklist
- Is this a complete bag construction, a companion project, or an upcycling modification?
- What is the finished size, and does it exclude the handles or strap?
- Does the download contain full pattern pieces, a foundation, a corner template, or only instructions and diagrams?
- What fabric width does the cutting chart assume—42 in., 44/45 in., canvas, or something else?
- Which seam allowance applies? Do not assume every project uses ¼ in. or ½ in.
- Will the bag need batting, fusible fleece, medium-weight interfacing, heavyweight stabilizer, stiff interfacing, Peltex/Timtex, cardboard, or corrugated plastic?
- Are the zipper, snap, magnetic closure, hook-and-loop tape, grommets, D-rings, O-rings, triglides, webbing, rope, leather cord, or purchased handles already available?
- Are you using named fabric only as an example, or does the project actually require a specific fabric type such as canvas or vinyl?
- Have you checked the current project page for renamed titles and a working download link?
- Are you following the PDF’s personal-use and redistribution restrictions?
Frequently Asked Questions
Are all 44 free bag patterns full-size printable patterns?
No. The collection includes downloadable instructions and diagrams, plus selected pattern pieces or templates where provided. Market Fresh Tote is a four-page instruction sheet with measurements and diagrams; Market Bag refers to a Corner Cutting Pattern, and Quilt Block Tote refers to a Roof Foundation Pattern. Check each project page before printing.
Which free bag pattern is best for a beginner?
The lower-barrier editorial choices are Market Bag, Reusable Market Bag, Sew & Stow, Sew Simple Purse, and Market Fresh Tote. Simple Zippered Pouch can also work if you already know basic zipper insertion, while Mini Log Cabin Bag is better for a beginner who is comfortable with small patchwork. Do the patterns allow commercial use?
Do not assume so. At least the Market Fresh Tote PDF specifies personal-use downloading and prohibits electronic or printed reproduction without written permission. Free access does not automatically grant redistribution rights or unrestricted permission to sell finished products.
Which patterns do not require a zipper?
Lower-hardware choices include Market Bag, Reusable Market Bag, Sew & Stow, Floral Strips Bag, Scrappy Strips Bag, and Sew Simple Purse. Always read the individual materials list because a zipper-free bag may still require interfacing, batting, handles, rope, a snap, or another closure.
Which projects start with an existing bag?
Spring to Life Tote decorates a purchased 16-inch canvas tote with appliqué. Quilt Block Tote covers the logo of an existing reusable cloth tote with a pieced, quilted, bound block. Neither is a complete bag-body construction pattern.
The Bottom Line
The best starting point depends less on the photograph than on your available fabric and supplies. Choose Market Bag, Reusable Market Bag, Sew & Stow, or Sew Simple Purse for a relatively straightforward low-hardware project; choose Mini Log Cabin Bag, Pieced Sewing Wristlet, or Patchwork Strips Tote Bag for precuts and scraps; choose Crafty Tote, Large Patchwork Bag, or All-Day Anywhere Tote for structure; and choose Messenger Bag, Striped Backpack, or Tropical Traveler/On-the-Go Bag for hands-free carrying. Open the individual project page, verify the finished dimensions and materials, identify what the download actually contains, and check the usage restrictions before cutting.
