These 35 Easter egg designs let young children dab, press, draw, stick, dip, and choose colors while an adult handles hot water, dye bowls, cutting, glue, and any small parts. Treat each idea as an adaptable invitation rather than a developmental test: a toddler may make one mark, while an older preschooler may repeat a pattern.

Safety and setup first

  • For art materials, look for ASTM D-4236 conformity and the ACMI Approved Product seal. The American Academy of Pediatrics notes that neither label guarantees complete safety, so avoid products with cautionary hazard wording, supervise use, prevent mouthing or swallowing, and wash hands afterward (HealthyChildren.org, updated July 16, 2024).
  • Use only food-grade dye on eggs intended to be eaten. Keep hard-cooked eggs refrigerated until serving and discard eggs that have been at room temperature for more than two hours (FoodSafety.gov).
  • Color only uncracked eggs, wash hands and work surfaces, and discard cracked eggs. Keep hunt eggs away from soil, animals, insects, and lawn chemicals; use plastic eggs when that is easier (Egg Safety Center).
  • Adult-only tasks include heating water, carrying dye, cutting paper, operating scissors, dispensing glue, and attaching tiny features. For children who mouth objects, choose drawing, food coloring on edible eggs, or paper marks instead of loose embellishments.

Choose an idea by mess, setup, and egg type

Dye and resist designs

1. One-colour dip-dyed egg

Let the child choose one color and lower an uncracked hard-cooked egg into an adult-held cup. Lift, drain, and dry on a rack.

2. Two-colour dip-dyed egg

Dip one half in the first color, dry it, then turn the egg for a second color. Keep cups stable and within adult reach.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Crayon scribble resist

Have the child press a crayon over the shell in broad scribbles; an adult then dips the egg in food coloring so the wax marks remain visible.

Place large star stickers on the shell, dip the egg, dry it, and let an adult remove stickers if they are difficult to lift.

6. Light-and-dark colour exploration

An adult prepares two bowls of diluted food coloring. The child predicts which dip will look lighter, then compares the dried eggs.

The Eggmazing Egg Decorator Mini - Easter Coloring Spinner
  • Patented Spinning Magic: Get egg-cited about the EggMazing patented motorized spinner that rotates your egg while you simply hold a marker against it, creating spirals, stripes, and multi-color swirls no hand could replicate; the battery-powered consistent spin does the work for you, and each design dries in a few seconds, so kids move from egg to egg without waiting
  • Dye-Free and Mess-Free Fun: The EggMazing Mini uses markers instead of liquid dyes for a mess-free, self-contained decorating experience; all 6 included markers are third-party tested non-toxic, so parents can breathe easy while kids color egg after egg with zero liquid mess involved
  • The Whole Family Can Join In: Designed for ages 3 and up, this is a true multigenerational activity where grandparents, parents, and kids all take turns creating their own unique designs together; perfect for Easter mornings, birthday party craft stations, and family DIY art nights; every egg turns out one-of-a-kind, so there is no wrong way to have fun
  • Trusted Safety Credentials: The EggMazing Mini is third-party tested to ASTM F963 toy safety standards, giving parents confidence when decorating eggs for any occasion; compact and stores easily between holidays and travels well for classroom craft days, spring celebrations, or holiday decoration sessions year-round
  • Everything in the Box: Each set includes 1 Mini EggMazing Spinner and 6 colorful non-toxic markers, so you are ready to start spinning right away; requires 3 AA batteries (not included); the compact size fits perfectly in an Easter basket or gift bag, making it an egg-cellent gift for birthdays, Easter, or any occasion that calls for creative fun

10. Thumbprint chicks

Choose yellow paint for thumbprints, then let an adult add beaks, feet, and eyes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

11. Sponge-dabbed paper egg

On a large paper egg, dab washable paint with a sponge. Crayola’s comparable paper project is labeled ages 6 and up, so younger children need simpler shapes and close supervision.

12. Two-colour sponge-dabbed paper egg

Offer two paint colors and let the child overlap dabs. Use a tray to contain the mess.

13. Washable-paint fingerprints on paper

Cover only the adult’s chosen area with paint and invite fingerprints across a paper egg; wipe hands promptly.

14. Handprint or palm-print paper egg

An adult applies a thin layer of paint to a palm, presses it onto paper, and washes the child’s hand immediately. Add details after drying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

15. Cotton-swab dots on paper

For children who can use a swab safely with supervision, make large dots on a paper egg. Do not allow mouthing.

The Eggmazing Egg Decorator - Easter Decorating Spinner Kit for Kids
  • No Dye Kit Needed: The Eggmazing Egg Decorator keeps egg coloring simple, no vinegar, no liquid dyes, no stained countertops or fingertips. The 8 quick-drying non-toxic markers mean no dye tablets, no bowls, and no surfaces to scrub. Just uncap a marker, hold it to the spinning egg, and watch the color appear instantly
  • Spin Your Own Masterpiece: Place a hard-boiled egg on the 4 motorized wheels, power on, and hold any marker to the surface. The wheels rotate the egg automatically while you guide the color. Stripes, spirals, swirls, and completely one-of-a-kind patterns emerge with every pass. Because the spinning action is always slightly different, no 2 eggs ever look the same. Set it up right on the kitchen table and let the art happen
  • Safety Certifications You Can Count On: The 8 markers are ACMI AP Certified Non-Toxic and ASTM D-4236 compliant. The spinner itself meets ASTM F963 toy safety standards and carries a CPSC Children's Product Certificate backed by third-party testing. Rated for ages 3 and up; adult supervision is recommended for youngest decorators. Kids create, parents and grandparents join in, and the non-toxic quick-drying ink keeps the whole family crafting with confidence
  • Everything in the Kit: The set includes the motorized spinner and 8 vibrant markers in pastel blue, green, yellow, pink, orange, purple, teal, and fuschia. Works best with large or extra-large hard-boiled eggs, wooden eggs, and EggMazing-branded eggs for the most consistent results. Requires 3 AA batteries (not included). Quick-drying ink means decorations are ready to handle in moments.
  • Way More Than an Easter Toy: The Eggmazing is a DIY craft set that earns its spot year-round. Use it for Easter basket stuffing, birthday party activities, classroom decoration sessions, holiday gatherings, or a rainy-day family game. Works with PEEPS-branded eggs too. Decorate egg after egg and let every family member, from the youngest decorator to grandparents, create something uniquely their own

  • Kid-Friendly, Parent-Approved: Every marker in this kit is non-toxic and quick-drying, confirmed by third-party lab testing per ASTM D-4236 and certified with the ACMI AP (Approved Product) Seal; quick-drying ink means less smearing and transfer during decorating so kids can handle their creations sooner.
