You can design a 3D-printable nameplate in a browser, export a model file, and prepare it for printing in a slicer without starting in traditional CAD software. The browser generator makes the model; it does not by itself produce a physical nameplate. To get one, use a compatible home printer or arrange printing through a service.
Choose a generator by the object and controls you need, then check its current export options and any paid feature limits before designing. After exporting, open the file in a slicer, select settings for the actual printer and material, and inspect the orientation and layer preview before printing.
Which browser nameplate generator should you use?
The tools below describe features advertised on their own pages; they have not been independently tested here. Their feature descriptions do not establish which tool produces the best print.
Recommended Free Tools
| Tool | Useful for | Features and limits stated on its page |
|---|---|---|
| 3dprint.name | Desk signs, wall signs, plaques, and keyring signs | Advertises a 3D preview, STL or 3MF export, and a printability check. Its page marks some features, including coloured 3MF and some production or export functions, as PRO. |
| FontStamp | Labels in different shapes, including batch projects | Advertises rectangular, circular, and other shapes; raised, flat, or engraved text; adjustable dimensions; optional holes and borders; batch mode; and STL export. The page says JavaScript and WebGL are required. |
| NameSTL | Standing nameplates and other personalized designs | Advertises a browser-based generator, preview, and STL download. Its page says design and preview are free, while STL downloading is paid, and suggests using a print service if you do not own a printer. Confirm current terms before relying on them. |
Check each tool’s current page for its supported shapes, file formats, browser requirements, and paid limits. A feature advertised by a generator is not a guarantee that the exported file will work with every slicer or printer.
#1 Best Overall
- 【More Colors for More Projects】 Multiple compact 250g mini spools provide practical amounts of different colors for small prints, multicolor models, accent parts, and test prints. Explore more colors without filling your shelf with full 1kg spools or leaving large amounts of rarely used colors behind
- 【Easy to Print PLA】 Built for smooth printing with standard PLA profiles, low warping, and dependable layer adhesion. A practical everyday material for beginners and hobbyists making models, toys, decor, prototypes, and utility parts
- 【Neatly Wound for Reliable Feeding】 Precision winding supports smooth, consistent feeding and helps reduce snags and mid-print interruptions. Keep light tension on the filament end while loading or unloading, and secure it before storage to prevent loose loops
- 【Consistent Diameter and Steady Extrusion】 A consistent 1.75mm ±0.02mm diameter supports stable flow, even layers, and clean detail from the first layer to the final layer. Reliable extrusion means less time troubleshooting and more time printing
- 【Fits Most FDM Printers】 Designed for most 1.75mm FDM printers with external, top-mounted, or open spool holders. Each spool measures 140mm in diameter and 36mm in width, with a 53mm center hole. For Bambu Lab AMS or AMS lite, search MakerWorld for a compatible 250g spool adapter before use
How to make a nameplate in your browser
- Choose the object. Decide whether you need a desk or wall sign, plaque, keyring sign, or label. This helps you choose a generator with the right shape and text controls.
- Enter the text and adjust the design. Use the generator’s available options for text, shape, dimensions, lettering style, and backing. Check its preview and confirm that the intended design fits your needs.
- Review export options and limits. Check whether the tool offers STL, 3MF, or another format that your slicer supports. Confirm whether the export or feature you want is paid or otherwise restricted.
- Export the model. Save the file where you can find it. An exported model file is not yet printer instructions and does not itself make a physical object.
From exported file to printed nameplate
A slicer takes a model and printer settings and converts them into instructions for a particular printer. Prusa’s guide for PrusaSlicer 3.0.0 says supported inputs include STL, 3MF, OBJ, STEP/STP, and SVG, and explains that the slicer converts a model into printer instructions such as G-code or BG-code. Other slicers may have different controls, so follow the documentation for yours.
- Select the actual printer and material. Check that the model and chosen material are appropriate for your printer. Prusa’s guide advises users to know their printer model, nozzle size, and filament material.
- Import and orient the model. Check the dimensions and place the model in an orientation that suits the design and build area. In PrusaSlicer, the guide includes placing a face on the bed where appropriate.
- Slice and inspect the layer preview. Confirm that the shape looks as intended, that new material is supported by the bed, model, or supports rather than floating, and that the first layer covers the bed as expected. Use the equivalent preview controls in your slicer if you do not use PrusaSlicer.
- Print at home or use a print service. If you do not have a compatible printer, a third-party print service is another route. NameSTL’s page mentions this option, but the reviewed sources do not establish a specific provider, location coverage, or price.
Prusa’s official guide states: “Before printing your 3D file, it needs to be converted into a file type called .gcode or .bgcode.” The guide is specifically for PrusaSlicer 3.0.0; consult your slicer’s own instructions for its supported file types and workflow. A generator’s “print-ready” or similar label describes its intended workflow, not a guarantee for your particular setup. Prusa’s modeling guidance also discusses solid or manifold geometry and how orientation affects surface appearance.

Materials and equipment
A home print requires a printer that supports the chosen material, along with the appropriate printer and material settings in your slicer. Do not assume that a material or profile will suit every printer. Prusa’s guide advises selecting material appropriate to the printer and profile; no specific printer model or material brand is recommended here.
If you do not own a printer, you can look into a print service instead. The available research does not establish a particular service, its prices, or where it operates.

FAQ
Can I make an STL nameplate without CAD?
Yes. Browser generators such as 3dprint.name, FontStamp, and NameSTL advertise nameplate or label design and model export. Check the tool’s current features and export limits; you may need broader design software if its options do not cover your project.
Does downloading an STL print the nameplate?
No. An STL is a model file. Open it in a compatible slicer, select settings for the actual printer and material, and generate printer instructions before printing. You can also arrange for a print service to make the object.

Import it into your slicer, check its size and orientation, and inspect the layer preview. Prusa’s PrusaSlicer 3.0.0 guide advises checking that the model looks right, material is supported rather than floating, and the first layer covers the bed as expected. Use your own slicer’s equivalent checks if you use another program.
