Robotor is an industrial robotic system that mills stone from a human-provided 3D design; it does not independently conceive a sculpture like Michelangelo. Its OR-OS software generates toolpaths from a 3D file, while people remain involved in preparing the model, setting up and operating the machine, and deciding how the finished work should look.
The comparison with Michelangelo is best understood through Carrara marble and sculptural form, not equivalent artistic agency. Robotor can automate substantial stone removal, but the documented process is digital, software-guided machining—not a robot inventing art.
What Robotor’s marble-carving robot is
Robotor is a multi-axis industrial stone-milling system developed from technology used by TorArt, a sculpture and design workshop in Carrara, Tuscany. Its system combines an industrial robot arm with a powered electrospindle and stone-cutting tools. Robotor describes OR-OS as self-programming CNC-milling software: starting with a 3D file, it generates toolpaths for the robot.

That automation does not make the system a general-purpose creative AI. The reviewed technical descriptions document digital input, toolpath generation, and stone milling—not independent artistic invention. Robotor’s slogan, “A robot for sculpture born from sculptors,” is the company’s own description, not an independent assessment.
#1 Best Overall
- Hardness Crafted with chromium vanadium alloy steel, this provides superior hardness, ensuring fine cutting performances when working with hard materials.
- The cut edges of this allows for smooth and effortless cutting, reducing fatigue and enabling precise engraving and carving results.
- Whether used in a seal engraving studio or for creating stone inscriptions, this add artistic value to the finally works.
- Designed for professional stone carvers and engravers, this is a must have tool to meet their demands for intricate cutting and exquisite craftsmanship.
- Versatile Applications Suitable for use in stone carving studios, this excels at working with various types of stones such as marble and granites, showcasing exceptional artistic skills.
How the process works
- Prepare the design. A person or team creates, scans, or otherwise prepares the 3D model that defines the intended form.
- Set up the job. The stone is positioned and the machining operation is prepared. Experienced users interact with the system during the process.
- Generate toolpaths. OR-OS converts the 3D file into paths for the robot’s milling tools.
- Mill the stone. The robot removes material along those paths, turning the block toward the model’s geometry.
- Assess and finish. People judge the result and determine what additional machining, polishing, or hand finishing is needed.
Robotor reports that milling its copy of Antonio Canova’s Terpsichore from a block of Bianco Carrara marble took about twelve days. That is a company-reported example, not a general production rate: completing and polishing a statue still takes additional time, and the duration depends on the work.
What the published specifications mean
Robotor’s 2023 brochure lists three standard configurations. The robot’s load capacity and the rotary table’s capacity describe different components; neither figure should be treated as a universal specification for every Robotor machine.
| Robotor 2023 brochure measure | Configuration 1 | Configuration 2 | Configuration 3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Robot load capacity | 150 kg | 240 kg | 420 kg |
| Rotary-table capacity | 15 tonnes | 35 tonnes | 50 tonnes |
| Working area | 6×6 | 6×6 | 6×6 |
These are manufacturer-published figures in a 2023 brochure, not independently validated comparative results or a current model-by-model guarantee. HSD’s case history describes one particular installation with an HSD ES748 electrospindle, a rotary table supporting up to 35 tonnes, and work up to 3.5 metres high. That supplier account describes that installation, not every Robotor system.
For a purchase decision, confirm the current model sheet and the specific configuration, including working envelope, arm payload, table capacity, spindle and tooling, software workflow, installation, training, and service support. The reviewed sources do not establish current pricing or a robust independent comparison of speed, accuracy, or cost.

- Great for engraved chapter, carving stone stamps, woodcrafts and small decorative crafts. Not for jade, porcelain, crystal, cobblestone, marble, bluestone and other hard materials
Where the Michelangelo comparison fits
Robotor works in Carrara, a marble district associated with Michelangelo, and its machines can mill human-designed sculptural forms from stone. That is the defensible connection: material, place, and sculptural result.
Michelangelo made artistic decisions through direct work with hand tools. Robotor’s documented system follows digital geometry and machining paths. People still determine what to model and how the result should be realized. The machine can take on substantial heavy stone removal, but its ability to reproduce a digital form does not establish that it shares an artist’s judgment or authorship.
Company context
According to Robotor’s company history, Filippo Tincolini founded TorArt in Carrara in 2004, its first robot was installed in 2006, and Robotor was formed in 2019 to make TorArt-developed technology available more broadly. The company says sales began in 2022 and that its machines were present in Europe, Asia, and the United States by 2023. These are company-reported milestones; they do not independently establish machine performance or current availability.

HSD’s case history names KUKA and HSD as strategic partners in a particular project and identifies the HSD ES748 electrospindle. This supports a concise description of the system’s industrial robot and milling-spindle components, but does not establish current partnership terms.

What robotic milling can—and cannot—offer
Robotic milling can perform demanding bulk removal and follow digital geometry. That can help produce large or complex forms and can support physical fabrication from digital heritage data. The sources reviewed do not establish a universal time saving, accuracy level, or cost advantage.
It does not eliminate the need for people. Artists, fabricators, and operators still prepare or approve the design, make process decisions, interact with the machine, assess the result, and decide how it should be finished. Robotic precision and artistic quality are not the same measure, and no objective percentage can quantify how close a milled work is to Michelangelo’s achievement.
For an individual interested in hand carving, stone-carving chisels are a human-scale tool—not a Robotor component or substitute. Hand carving is a different process, with its own tools, skills, and safety requirements.
FAQ
Is Robotor’s marble-carving machine powered by artificial intelligence?
The documented system is more precisely described as automated robotic stone milling. Robotor says OR-OS generates toolpaths from a 3D file; the reviewed material does not show that it independently invents artistic concepts.

Does Robotor mill a sculpture entirely by itself?
No. People prepare the digital model, set up and interact with the machine, and judge how the result should be finished. The workflow automates machining, not every decision from concept to finished art.
How long does Robotor take to mill a sculpture?
Robotor reports about twelve days of milling for its Bianco Carrara marble copy of Canova’s Terpsichore. That is one company-reported example, not a general rate, and it does not include all completion and polishing time.
What do the machine’s load-capacity figures mean?
The robot’s load capacity refers to the robot, while rotary-table capacity refers to the table supporting the work. Robotor’s 2023 brochure lists different figures for three configurations, so check the specific model and current specifications rather than treating one maximum as standard.

Can an individual artist buy a Robotor machine?
Robotor systems are industrial equipment. Suitability depends on the configuration, installation, tooling, software, training, and service support. The reviewed sources do not establish current pricing or local availability.
