You can make a personal Android wallpaper from a photo, create an emoji pattern or AI-generated image on supported phones, or design one in Canva. The available settings vary by manufacturer, model, software, and sometimes account type, so preview the result and check your phone’s wallpaper controls before applying it.
Here are four practical routes, from using a photo you already have to creating a custom design. On Pixel, the usual starting point is to touch and hold an empty area of the Home screen and open Wallpaper & style; Samsung and other Android phones may use different menu names.

1. Turn one of your photos into a wallpaper
This is the quickest option. Choose a photograph you took, an image someone sent you, or a picture saved on your phone. Pick an image with a clear focal point and enough framing to tolerate cropping; that is practical composition advice, not a device requirement.
- On a Pixel, touch and hold an empty area of the Home screen.
- Tap Wallpaper & style, then More wallpapers or Change wallpaper.
- Choose Choose a photo or My photos, then select an image.
- Preview the crop and tap Apply.
- Choose the Lock screen, Home screen, or both if those options are offered.
On Samsung, Google Play’s Android guide gives this example: Settings > Wallpapers and Style > Change wallpapers, then select a photo from Gallery. Other manufacturers may use different menu names. Check the crop before applying
Look at where the clock, notifications, and app icons appear. Keep the main subject clear of those areas where possible, and preview the Lock screen and Home screen separately because their layouts differ.
2. Make an emoji-pattern wallpaper on a supported Pixel
Emoji Workshop makes a patterned wallpaper from emojis, with choices for the pattern, size, and colors. Google documents the feature for Pixel 4a and later; it is not a standard feature on every Android phone. You can select up to 14 emojis or randomize a selection. [c002]
- Touch and hold an empty area of the Pixel Home screen.
- Open Wallpaper & style, then Change wallpaper.
- Choose Emoji Workshop.
- Edit the emoji selection, choose a pattern, size, and colors, then preview the result.
- Apply the wallpaper to the Lock screen, Home screen, or both where offered.
If Emoji Workshop does not appear, your phone may not support it or the menu may differ. Use a photo or a design tool instead.

3. Generate an AI wallpaper where supported
AI wallpaper availability depends on the phone and its software. Google documents the feature for Pixel 8 and later, and notes that some account types, including certain Family Link accounts, may not have access. Google Play’s guide also describes a Samsung route through Settings > Wallpapers and Style > Change wallpapers > Creative > Generative; check your particular model and software for availability. - On a supported Pixel, touch and hold an empty area of the Home screen and tap Wallpaper & style.
- Open More wallpapers, then AI wallpaper.
- Choose a theme and adjust the prompt choices, or use Inspire me if available.
- Generate and preview an option, then set it for the Lock screen or Home screen.
On a supported Samsung phone, open its wallpaper settings and look for Creative or Generative. Follow the on-screen prompts to choose a theme, adjust the prompt, generate variations, and set a result. Menu names and availability can vary.
Do not expect AI wallpaper on every Android phone simply because it runs a recent Android version. If the feature is unavailable, try a personal photo or Canva.

4. Design a wallpaper in Canva
Canva is useful when you want more control over colors, text, photos, or layout than the phone’s wallpaper settings provide. Its phone-wallpaper templates can be customized with personal photos, colors, and text, then downloaded and applied through the phone’s wallpaper settings. [c004]
- Open Canva on the web or in its app.
- Search for a phone wallpaper template, or begin with a blank design.
- Change the colors, add text, and insert personal photos or other design elements.
- Download the finished design.
- Open the image on your phone and apply it through the wallpaper settings, previewing the crop first.
Canva’s templates can be customized for Android or iPhone, but do not assume one design will fit every Android display perfectly. Screen dimensions and cropping vary, so use your phone’s preview as the final check. [c004]
A simple layout to try
Use a background color or a lightly blurred photo, keep the main subject clear of interface elements, and choose high-contrast text if you add a quote. Preview the design with the Lock screen clock and Home screen icons visible.

Apply and check your wallpaper
After choosing or creating an image, use your phone’s wallpaper settings to preview it and select the Lock screen, Home screen, or both where the device offers that choice. Pixel settings commonly begin by touching and holding an empty Home screen area and opening Wallpaper & style; Samsung settings provide a different path. [c001] [c003]
- Preview both screens. The clock, notifications, widgets, and app icons can cover different parts of the image.
- Check the crop. The phone may reposition or crop the image to fit its display.
- Keep important details visible. Avoid placing small text or the main subject behind interface elements.
- Save an original copy. Keep the photo or design file in case you want to adjust it later.
