A layered PSD can save time when you need a starting point for a mockup, paper effect, poster, icon, or other graphic—but “layered” does not guarantee that every part is easy to edit, and “free” does not automatically mean commercial use is allowed. The resources below are useful discovery leads, not a verified catalog of live downloads: check each creator’s page, file, and license before using an asset.
Where can I find free layered PSD files?
Older roundups can point you toward useful types of PSDs, but their age and unverified links make them better for inspiration than as a current, cleared download list. A 2013 roundup titled “40+ Free PSD Graphics” described customizable files including ribbons, stickers, icon sets, retro backgrounds, a layered wooden billboard, a spiral notebook, Polaroid frames, and comic speech bubbles. The article page and the status of its original downloads could not be confirmed. 2013 PSD roundup.
A 2010 Japanese-language collection similarly described 40 free PSD resources, with examples such as a product box, sticker, and old-paper graphic. Its links and individual licenses also need checking at the original source. 2010 PSD roundup.

For newer discovery, a 2023 Photoshop resource roundup covered effects, templates, brushes, posters, editable text effects, collage templates, and glass-distortion layers. Its statement that featured assets were free to Adobe Creative Cloud users applied when it was published; it does not establish current access or terms. 2023 Photoshop resource roundup.

| Task | Examples in the cited collections | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Mockups and product presentation | Product box, wooden billboard, shelf | Whether the artwork area is independently editable and whether the file depends on a particular Photoshop feature. |
| Textures and paper effects | Ripped-paper holes, old paper, paper moodboards, retro backgrounds | Dimensions, resolution, and whether the texture is on a separate layer or baked into a background. |
| Graphic and interface elements | Ribbons, stickers, icon sets, speech bubbles | Whether individual objects can be selected and recolored, and whether any included fonts or linked assets are required. |
| Posters and type treatments | Editable text effects, posters, collage templates | Whether text remains editable, and whether fonts or effects are available in your editor. |
The examples identify resource types, not a verified set of currently downloadable files. Confirm the exact item and its conditions on the linked creator page before relying on it.
What should you check before downloading or publishing?
- Find the original creator’s page. A roundup’s description is not a substitute for the current download page, particularly for links collected in 2010 or 2013.
- Read the license for that exact file. “Free” alone does not establish permission for commercial use, redistribution, or use in client work. Keep a copy of the license wording or a record of the page and date you checked it.
- Match the file to your output. Check the stated pixel dimensions, resolution, format, and any minimum editor version. A file that works for a web graphic may not be suitable for print at the size you need.
- Open the PSD in your intended editor. Inspect the layer panel and preview the document; do not assume every layer type or effect will transfer intact.
- Keep the original file. Save an untouched copy before changing layers, especially if you need to revisit the creator’s intended structure or troubleshoot a compatibility issue.
Can I edit a PSD without Photoshop?
Sometimes. A 2026 publisher guide says GIMP 2.10 and later supports most layers, and that Photopea opens layers including adjustment layers. That is not a guarantee that every effect, blend, or feature will look or behave identically to Photoshop. Open a copy of the file in the editor you plan to use and compare the rendered image with the layer panel before committing to it. 2026 PSD listing and editor guide.
