These 41 blue quilt patterns cover far more than blue-and-white patchwork. You will find traditional blocks, tonal quilts made from pale blue through navy, scrappy designs, winter wall hangings, nautical children’s quilts, table toppers, runners, mini quilts, and a 1930s-inspired doll quilt. Choose a pattern by the project’s intended use and construction style first, then build a blue palette with enough value contrast for the design to read clearly.
The collection is an inspiration and pattern index attributed to the American Patchwork & Quilting Editors. It was updated January 9, 2026, and individual pattern pages should be checked for current instructions, yardage, finished dimensions, skill information, and download availability before you begin. Traditional blue-and-white quilt patterns
A blue-and-white palette is one of the safest choices when you want a crisp, adaptable quilt. It can look antique, nautical, wintry, or thoroughly contemporary depending on the prints, block scale, and amount of negative space.
1. Winter Wonder
Winter Wonder is a dramatic blue-and-white quilt presented as a warm winter project. Use it for a strong seasonal statement, or replace overtly winterlike fabrics with general blue prints if you want the color combination to work year-round.
#1 Best Overall
- Features: Unique designs pre-cut quilting fabric
- Package: 50 pcs fabric squares

- Easy to work with: These quilting squares are ideal for many sewing projects including quilts, cushion covers, costumes, wallets, purses, baby clothes, kids’ bedding, hand puppets, tablecloths and more.
2. Vision in Blues
Vision in Blues alternates blue-and-white floral squares with a classic block pattern. Prints, plaids, stripes, and shirtings add variety, while the borderless throw layout keeps the composition from feeling overly formal.
3. Stellar Blues
Stellar Blues is a blue-and-white wall hanging built from simple shapes and classic prints. Its winter-oriented presentation makes it a natural seasonal project, but the star-like arrangement can also suit an everyday blue-and-white room.

Crossing Point is a scrappy blue-and-white throw centered on Cross and Crown blocks. It is a good choice if you want a traditional block structure without limiting yourself to a single blue fabric.
5. Cold Snap
Cold Snap uses a blue-and-white icy-crystal design and chain piecing. The crystal motif gives it a clear winter identity, while chain piecing offers an efficient way to organize repeated units.
6. Blue-and-White Pinwheels
Blue-and-White Pinwheels is a two-color quilt that uses varied blue and white prints to create subtle scrappiness and depth. The design shows why “two-color” does not have to mean visually flat: differences in print scale and value can supply much of the movement.
7. Checkerboard Squares
Checkerboard Squares places square-in-a-square blocks on point and surrounds them with blue toile. The combination of geometric centers and a more illustrative toile creates a traditional blue-and-white effect with a clear fabric focal point.

Classic blocks and heritage-inspired designs
Choose one of these patterns if the block itself matters as much as the color. They are especially useful for quilters who enjoy repeated units, structured layouts, and fabrics with a reproduction or heirloom feel.
8. Outside the Box
Outside the Box is based on a simple two-color 16-Patch block and includes nine alternative setting options. That flexibility makes the pattern useful when you like the basic unit but want to compare layouts before committing to a final arrangement.
9. Rhapsody in Blue
Rhapsody in Blue interprets a Single Irish Chain through a concealed Nine-Patch structure. It is a strong option for a blue quilt with recognizable traditional movement that is less dependent on an elaborate motif.
10. Stars from the Past
Stars from the Past uses classic LeMoyne Star blocks against a blue background. Reproduction fabrics can reinforce the historical character, while carefully chosen contemporary prints can give the same block a fresher appearance.
11. Winter Blues
Winter Blues uses Churn Dash blocks in an icy palette and is designed as a table topper. It is a contained way to try a traditional block and seasonal color scheme without taking on a full-size quilt.
12. Crossways
Crossways combines Four-Patch units and setting squares to create diagonal Irish Chain movement. The pattern is a useful choice for quilters who like the rhythm of a chain design but want to work with relatively familiar pieced components.

18. Stars from the Past
Stars from the Past is the heritage-leaning choice in this group, with LeMoyne Star blocks and reproduction fabrics against blue. It suits quilters looking for a more formal, historical appearance.
Winter and seasonal blue quilt projects
Several patterns use blue to evoke snow, ice, dusk, or the woods. They can serve as holiday décor, but not every winter-associated design is restricted to December; neutral winter palettes can remain on display throughout the colder months.
19. Winter Woods
Winter Woods is a wall or door quilt featuring pine trees and a snowflake motif. Its vertical décor format makes it especially suitable for an entryway or another place where a full quilt would be impractical.
20. Snow Crystals
Snow Crystals is a winter-themed wall hanging. The compact format gives you a way to use a snow or ice concept as an accent rather than committing to a bed-sized project.

Scrappy, tonal, and blue-plus-neutral patterns

25. Blueberries and Cream
Blueberries and Cream alternates light and dark prints in a stepwise throw. Flannel and blue prints give it a winter-friendly feel, although the underlying color idea can be adapted with ordinary quilting cottons.
26. Make the Connection

27. Bolts of Blue

How to choose the right blue palette
Use value before worrying about exact color names
For most pieced designs, begin by sorting fabric into light, medium, and dark values. A quilt made from several blue prints can still lose its pattern if every fabric has the same visual strength. A pale blue, a middle-value denim or cobalt, and a dark navy will usually create more readable separation than three nearly identical blues.

Match the palette to the pattern’s visual language
- Blue and white: Choose this for crisp traditional, winter, or high-contrast results. White makes blue values stand out clearly.
- Blue and cream: Cream gives chain, floral, and reproduction-inspired designs a softer, warmer appearance.
- Blue and gray: Gray is useful for stormy, icy, subdued, or contemporary palettes, as seen in Roaring Waves, Icy Blues, and Classic Blue Heirloom Quilt.
- Blue and tan or brown: These neutrals support rustic and outdoors-oriented designs such as Winding Ways and Walk in the Woods.
- Blue, aqua, and cool green: This combination suits oceanic or botanical effects, particularly Blue Ocean Waves and Underwater Adventure.
- Blue with red or gold: Small accents can change the mood without overpowering the blue. Red, White, and ‘Bluetiful’ uses small red accents; Jewel Box adds golds and browns to jewel-tone blues.
Choose yardage, scraps, or precuts deliberately
Scrappy patterns benefit from variety, while a controlled two-color quilt may be easier to manage with yardage or coordinated bundles. Quilting retailers commonly organize blue fabric by shade and format, including navy, azure, cobalt, denim, sapphire, and lighter blue families, as well as yardage and fat-quarter bundles. [c004] A current example of a multi-blue approach is Robert Kaufman’s “Drift Into Blue” collection, which lists navy, azure, chambray, sky, denim, and cobalt colorways; its stated in-store availability begins in August 2026, so check current availability rather than treating that date as permanent. [c005]
Solid quilting cottons are especially useful for backgrounds, sashing, borders, and unifying assorted prints. Kona Cotton and similar basics are relevant options, but exact shade names and inventory should be confirmed when you shop. [c006]

Supplies for making a blue quilt
Every pattern has its own material list, so do not buy yardage from the collection title alone. Confirm the linked pattern’s fabric requirements, cutting dimensions, batting, backing, binding, and finishing instructions first.
- Quilting cotton in the selected blue, print, and neutral values
- A quilting rotary cutter, acrylic ruler, and suitable cutting mat
- Fabric scissors, thread, sewing needles, pins or clips, and a seam ripper
- A sewing machine and the appropriate presser foot for the pattern’s construction
- An iron and pressing surface
- Batting, backing fabric, and binding supplies for the confirmed finished size
- Paper foundations for Love Me Knot Table Topper, if required by its instructions
- Appliqué supplies for Blossoms and Borders Wall Hanging, according to its pattern directions
American Patchwork & Quilting identifies a rotary cutter, acrylic ruler, and rotary-cutting mat as the three basic pieces of equipment for rotary cutting; a 45 mm blade is a common all-purpose size. Missouri Star’s beginner guidance also lists scissors, thread, needles, pins or clips, a seam ripper, pressing equipment, marking tools, and a sewing machine among the useful basics. [c002] [c003]
The basic cutting setup
If you are starting from scratch, a 45mm quilting rotary cutter is the most broadly useful single cutting tool for the collection. Pair it with a self-healing quilting cutting mat to protect the work surface and support safe, stable cutting, and add a 6 x 24 inch quilting ruler for strips, squares, and other common straight cuts. The 6-by-24-inch acrylic ruler is described as a versatile first ruler for cutting strips from yardage and handling related quilting tasks. [c007]
Rotary-cutter blades are razor-sharp. Keep the blade covered or locked when not cutting, use a mat designed for rotary cutting, keep fingers away from the ruler’s edge, and follow the cutter manufacturer’s safety instructions. [c002]
Construction techniques represented in the collection
The 41 designs offer more technique variety than a simple list of blue-and-white blocks might suggest:
- Standard repeated patchwork: 16-Patch, Nine-Patch, Four-Patch, Churn Dash, Cross and Crown, and square-in-a-square units appear in several designs.
- Triangle-squares: Little Blue Triangle-Squares, 1930s Doll Quilt, Batik Triangle Stars, and Blossoms and Borders Wall Hanging use triangle-based construction in different ways.
- Foundation paper piecing: Love Me Knot Table Topper uses foundation paper piecing.
- Curved piecing: Winding Ways creates an overlapping-circle effect with curved units.
- Chain piecing: Cold Snap specifically uses chain piecing, a useful workflow for repeated units.
- Fussy cutting: Jewel Box uses fussy-cut stripes, so print direction and motif placement become part of the design.
- Batik work: Batik Strips Table Runner and Batik Triangle Stars show two different ways to use batiks.
- Appliqué: Blossoms and Borders Wall Hanging combines appliquéd blossoms with pieced borders.
- On-point settings: Double Cross Quilt and Checkerboard Squares use diagonal settings that change the visual direction of the blocks.
More pattern ideas from the collection
Jewel Box
Jewel Box uses jewel-tone blues, golds, and browns in a rich wall hanging. Aster blocks and fussy-cut stripes provide both geometric structure and carefully selected fabric detail.
Double Cross Quilt
Double Cross Quilt sets two cross-block designs on point. Large-print cutting, scrappy borders, and dark blue inner and outer borders combine to create a layered, framed composition.
Red, White, and ‘Bluetiful’
Red, White, and ‘Bluetiful’ is a summery wall hanging that combines scrappy blues and white with small red accents. It is a useful option when you want blue to function as part of a patriotic or seasonal accent palette rather than as the only color.
Before you cut: a practical checklist
- Open the individual pattern page. Confirm that the instructions are still available and note the finished size, yardage, unit dimensions, and any stated skill or technique requirements.
- Make a value mock-up. Photograph or arrange your chosen fabrics in grayscale if you are unsure whether the light, medium, and dark values separate enough.
- Check directional prints. Toile, stripes, paisley, large florals, and fussy-cut motifs may require extra planning or fabric.
- Pre-sort scraps. For scrappy patterns, group fabrics by value and decide whether you want a controlled blue range or a deliberately varied mix.
- Cut a test unit. This is particularly useful for small triangle-squares, curved units, on-point settings, and foundation paper piecing.
- Plan finishing materials. Backing, batting, binding, thread, and quilting costs depend on the confirmed finished dimensions, not simply the pattern name.
How to narrow 41 choices to one
Start with the finished object: a bed quilt, throw, wall hanging, baby quilt, table topper, runner, mini quilt, or doll quilt. Next choose the construction experience you want. For familiar patchwork, look at Outside the Box, Rhapsody in Blue, Winter Blues, or Crossways. For a technique-focused project, consider Love Me Knot Table Topper, Winding Ways, Batik Triangle Stars, Jewel Box, or Blossoms and Borders Wall Hanging.
Finally, decide whether the blue should be the entire story. Blue-and-white patterns provide the clearest contrast; blue-and-gray and blue-and-cream designs are quieter; blue with tan, brown, green, aqua, gold, or red creates a more specific setting or seasonal mood. That three-part decision—size, technique, and palette—will usually narrow the collection more effectively than choosing by title alone.
