For a beginner, the five most useful hand-sewing stitches are running stitch for practice or basting, backstitch for stronger seams, whip stitch and blanket stitch for edges, and slipstitch for a discreet folded hem. Choose by the job: how much strain the seam will face, whether the thread should show, and whether the fabric needs to stretch.

Choose a stitch by the job

Stitch Best suited to What to know
Running stitch Practice, temporary basting, gathering, or a lightly loaded line Quick and simple, but not locked; it can shift or break under pulling.
Backstitch Hand-sewn seams and repairs that need more strength Creates a continuous line on the face of the fabric. Keep spacing even.
Whip stitch Joining or covering a raw edge, attaching a patch, or closing a small tear Diagonal loops pass over the edge, so the thread is visible there.
Slipstitch A folded hem where you want to minimize visible thread Alternates between the fold and a tiny catch of the garment fabric.
Blanket stitch A stable, intentional finish on an edge or patch Anchored loops make a finished edge; it is a non-stretch stitch.

The stitch descriptions and uses in this guide follow the Singer Reference Library and iFixit’s repair guide.

How to sew the five basic stitches

Running stitch: practice, baste, or gather

Pass the needle in and out of the fabric in a repeated line. For a controlled line, Singer recommends short, even stitches about 1/4 inch (6 mm) long. For temporary basting, alternating longer and shorter stitches is useful. Because a running stitch is not locked, secure the end with a backstitch rather than leaving it loose.

Backstitch: make a stronger hand-sewn seam

Bring the needle through the fabric, then insert it behind the point where the thread last emerged. Bring it forward again by a matching distance and repeat, so each new stitch returns behind the previous exit point. Singer’s spacing guide is 1/16 to 1/8 inch (1.5 to 3 mm) behind the previous exit point, then forward by the same distance. Consistent spacing helps make the seam even. Backstitch is sturdier than running stitch, but a strong hand stitch is not automatically the right repair for every damaged or heavily strained area.

Whip stitch: work over an edge

Pass diagonal loops over the edge, keeping the spacing and tension consistent. Use it to join or cover a raw edge, attach a patch, or close a small tear. The stitches remain visible along the edge, so it is better for a deliberate edge finish than for an invisible hem.

Slipstitch: hold a folded hem discreetly

Take a small bite of the fold, then catch only one or two threads of the garment fabric before returning to the fold. Singer describes spacing of about 1/4 inch (6 mm). Keep the garment-side bites small and do not pull too tightly; over-tight tension can make a hem pucker or draw the fabric.

Blanket stitch: finish an edge with anchored loops

Work along the edge so each loop is caught and anchored by the neighboring stitch. This creates a visible, stable finish for an edge or patch. It is a non-stretch finish, so do not choose it for a seam that needs to stretch with knit fabric.

Other textile tips that make repairs more successful

  • Practice on scraps first. Sew straight lines on spare fabric before working on a garment; this lets you adjust stitch size and tension without risking the finished item. The iFixit repair learning path also recommends starting with practice.
  • Match the stitch to the fabric’s movement. For stretch fabric, iFixit describes herringbone as a flexible stitch suited to knits and other stretch materials. Blanket stitch, by contrast, is non-stretch.
  • Do not treat a hole as just a seam. If fabric is missing or worn through, a line of stitches may not rebuild the damaged area. Patching or woven darning may be more appropriate approaches than simply closing the gap.
  • Use only as much tension as needed. In particular, keep blindstitched hem bites small and avoid pulling them tight, which can distort the garment.

When a basic stitch is not enough

These stitches are useful for small repairs, hems, patches, and practice, but they do not replace assessing the damage. A small tear with intact fabric may be closed with whip stitch or reinforced with backstitch; a hole with missing material needs a repair that addresses the lost fabric. For a highly strained seam or a repair where the fabric’s condition is uncertain, do not assume a hand stitch alone will restore the garment’s original strength.
