Rubber bands can power cars that roll, helicopters that spin, and soft projectiles that fly. Stretching or twisting a band stores elastic potential energy; when it contracts or unwinds, that energy becomes motion. These seven ideas offer different ways to explore that change, but they are not seven equally detailed build guides: follow the linked instructions for the specific project, and treat brief descriptions as project ideas rather than complete directions.
How rubber-band power works
A stretched or twisted rubber band stores elastic potential energy. Releasing it lets the band contract or unwind, turning stored energy into movement. In a car, the band turns an axle and wheels; in a helicopter, it spins propellers. A launcher transfers motion to a small projectile. The builds can help children explore potential and kinetic energy, simple machines, torque, and Newton’s third law, depending on the activity.
For a rolling car, see Science Buddies’ rubber-band-powered car activity. For flight and engineering concepts, NASA’s educator challenge and student guide explore propeller rotation, torque, and Newton’s third law.

Choose a project by the kind of motion
1. Pocket launcher: send a soft projectile
DIY.org’s pocket launcher activity uses popsicle sticks, rubber bands, tape, scissors, and paper or foam projectiles. Its core appeal is a quick demonstration of stored energy turning into a short launch. Keep projectiles soft and low power, supervise the activity, and follow the DIY.org instructions.
2. Rubber-band-powered car: roll across a surface
Science Buddies’ “Build a Rubber Band-Powered Car” activity uses materials including CDs, cardboard, paperclips, tape, wooden skewers, and rubber bands. The band drives an axle, making this a useful choice for investigating how energy and simple machines work together. Use the linked activity for the actual build directions.

KiwiCo’s rubber-band helicopter activity lists two propellers, shafts and mounts, a lollipop stick, tape, hot glue, a rubber band, and needle-nose pliers. KiwiCo gives this activity an age range of 9–16 and an estimated build time of 30 minutes to one hour; those are that publisher’s specifications, not general age guidance or a guarantee of completion time.
4. NASA helicopter challenge: test an engineering design
NASA’s rubber-band-powered helicopter challenge is designed for grades 5–8. Its student guide lists a craft stick, propeller, paper clip, rubber band, cardstock, scissors, ruler, and tape. It frames the build as an engineering challenge rather than simply a toy to assemble: learners can consider how the propeller and band affect the design.

5. Rubber-band racer: build a moving vehicle
KiwiCo’s rubber-band racer activity is listed for ages 5–16 and says an adult is needed. Its directions include cutting and drilling components, so plan for an adult to handle or closely supervise tool use. Follow KiwiCo’s complete directions rather than inferring steps from the activity title.
6. Straw rocket with a rubber-band launcher: send a lightweight rocket forward
West Virginia University Extension’s straw rocket activity pairs a straw rocket with a rubber-band launcher. The instructions call for adult supervision and specify aiming away from people, animals, and objects. 7. Toy-car launcher: move a small car with a launcher
Make: describes a mini rubber-band-powered toy-car launcher made from scraps. This is a project idea to explore through its linked page, not a complete set of build steps here. It differs from a rubber-band car: instead of winding a band on the vehicle to drive its axle, the launcher gives a toy car a push.

All age ranges and supervision notes in the table belong to the named activity publishers; they are not universal certifications. The activities use a mix of household or recycled materials and specialty pieces such as propellers, mounts, wheels, or shafts. An optional rubber-band craft kit for kids may be convenient for basic supplies, but check its contents against the chosen activity; many builds can instead use the materials listed in their instructions.

Keep building and launching safe
- Follow the safety directions attached to the activity you choose, and have an adult supervise tool use and launches.
- Use soft, low-power projectiles for the pocket launcher. For the straw rocket, follow WVU Extension’s direction to aim away from people, animals, and objects.
- Set up a controlled work area for scissors, drilling, pliers, and hot glue. An adult should handle or directly supervise tools and hot glue, especially with younger children.
- Keep hands and faces clear of stretched bands and moving parts; do not aim a launcher at anyone.
- Inspect bands and materials before use. Replace a band that is cracked, brittle, or damaged, and stop if a build’s moving parts come loose.
Turn the toy into a simple experiment
Once the build works as described, change one variable at a time and compare results. Avoid assuming that a particular change will improve performance: the result depends on the design and materials.
Quick Recap
- Cars and racers: Compare how far they travel on the same surface. If a car veers or stalls, STEM Inventions suggests checking whether the wheels are parallel and whether glue, tape, or the frame rubs against a wheel. See its project troubleshooting notes.
- Helicopters: KiwiCo suggests exploring spin direction, added weight, or a wing. Make one change at a time and observe what happens; the activity does not promise a particular flight result.
- Launchers: Compare how different soft projectiles behave, while keeping launches low-power and following the activity’s safety rules.
