5 Contemporary Approaches to Traditional Painting

Traditional painting can evolve through inherited visual languages, visible process, outdoor work, mixed-media surfaces, and digital tools combined with hand painting.

Artists can modernize traditional painting without abandoning it: they can adapt an inherited visual language, make the act of painting visible, work with the environment, combine materials, or bring digital imaging into a handmade process. These five approaches offer practical ways to think about what changes—and what remains—when old methods meet contemporary ideas.

1. Reinterpret an inherited visual language

Start with a tradition’s recognizable visual vocabulary, then change its subject, scale, setting, or meaning. That vocabulary might include ink line, calligraphic gesture, hanging-scroll format, mineral pigments, or established ways of organizing a composition.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s 2013 exhibition Ink Art: Past as Present in Contemporary China presented about 70 works by 35 artists. It showed how artists working from the 1980s onward altered inherited Chinese traditions while retaining an identification with their expressive language. The exhibition’s sections—The Written Word, New Landscapes, Abstraction, and Beyond the Brush—demonstrate that continuity need not mean repeating historical subjects or styles unchanged.

For your own work, identify the element that carries the tradition: perhaps the movement of the brush, the relationship between empty and painted space, or the format of the support. Keep that element legible, then decide what you want to redirect. The useful question is not simply whether the work looks old or new, but what it preserves and what it deliberately transforms.

2. Make material and process part of the image

A painting’s surface can show how it was made. Brush marks, poured or dripped paint, scraped areas, exposed grounds, and visible revisions can become part of the image’s meaning rather than a layer hidden beneath the finished composition.

Pérez Art Museum Miami’s Held in Layers focuses on decisions about surface, structure, and process—how paintings are built, revised, and resolved. Technical analysis of Jackson Pollock’s work at the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum documents tube paints brushed onto pre-primed canvas and drip patterns made with the canvas laid flat. Pollock developed his methods in part by seeking synthetic paints that met his material needs. These examples show that process can be both deliberate and materially specific.

When planning a process-led painting, decide which actions should remain visible. A useful set of comparisons is:

  • Chance and control: Is the mark planned, or does it emerge from pouring, dripping, or an additive?
  • Thickness and surface: Does the paint sit in a raised layer, soak into the support, or reveal the ground beneath it?
  • Revision: Are earlier decisions covered, partly visible, or left as evidence of the painting’s development?

Choose materials for the handling you want, not just for their appearance. A fluid paint, a thick body color, and a scraped layer behave differently and leave different evidence behind.

3. Let observation and the environment participate

Working from nature can mean observing a changing scene or allowing weather and place to affect the work itself. The distinction matters: in one case, the artist records environmental change; in the other, the environment physically changes the materials.

Translate what you see

Plein-air painting begins with direct observation. The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s 2026 exhibition Chasing Clouds describes artists making paintings and drawings outdoors as they explored ways to record fleeting effects in nature, alongside the emerging possibilities of photography. Changing light and weather become subjects to interpret rather than fixed details to copy.

Let conditions alter the materials

The Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art describes Hiroshi Senju reconfiguring traditional Japanese painting through contemporary techniques, including idealized abstractions of real waterfalls. It also documents artist Bingyi painting outdoors while drawing on historical Chinese ink painting and philosophy. In one hanging-scroll work, she applied layers of splashed ink as sea breeze and humidity affected the paper and ink. Here, the setting is not only observed; it participates in the work’s physical making.

These approaches can be compared through control, chance, and permanence: how much the artist directs the result, how much depends on conditions, and whether those effects remain visible after the work dries. If you are working outdoors with paper or ink, treat changes in wind and humidity as active variables rather than assuming the materials will behave as they do indoors.

4. Build a hybrid mixed-media surface

Mixed-media painting combines paint with other media, supports, or substances. Rather than treating the surface as a window made from one material, think of it as a system of layers, each with a distinct job: drawing, stain, opaque color, reflective leaf, transfer, collage, or protective coating.

The Russian Museum’s conservation documentation describes works using oil, tempera, watercolor, pastel, gouache, gold leaf, collage, and contemporary materials. It also notes that conservators use traditional supplies such as sturgeon glue and wheat paste alongside synthetic materials. The range illustrates why a mixed-media painting may draw on knowledge of historical recipes as well as modern polymers.

Before combining materials, consider how the layers will work together:

  • Adhesion and drying: Materials can dry and bond differently; the support and the sequence of layers matter.
  • Reversibility and conservation: A complex surface may be difficult to repair or alter, so consider how securely each material is attached and how the finished work might age.

For supplies, choose materials according to their role and compatibility with your support. There is no single mixed-media recipe: a work that combines paper collage and watercolor poses different material questions from one that layers oil, leaf, and synthetic components.

5. Combine hand painting with digital imaging and printing

Digital tools can extend traditional choices about composition, layering, transfer, and surface without requiring an artist to give up physical paint or handmade supports. An image might be generated or altered digitally, printed onto a surface, and then changed by hand through painting, collage, or further transfers.

The University of Iowa’s Digital Atelier documents artists combining painting, collage, image transfer and monotype, and printmaking on plywood, fabric, rusty metal, and handmade substrates. The project also records later use of UV-cured flatbed printers, laser engravers, and imaging hardware and software. These tools broaden the options for placing images and marks on a surface; the artist’s decisions still determine how they relate to the handmade parts.

When developing a digital hybrid, ask four practical questions:

  • Where is the image generated: by hand, digitally, or through both?
  • Where does the hand intervene, and what does that intervention change?
  • How many iterations are possible before the image is applied to the final support?
  • Is the finished object unique, part of an edition, or a combination of an editioned image and unique handwork?

These choices affect how the work is made and how it is understood. A printed image with later hand painting may be one-of-a-kind, while another process may produce multiple versions with the same digital foundation.

How to choose an approach

Begin with the part of traditional painting you want to keep: a visual language, a gesture, a material, direct observation, or a hands-on surface. Then choose the contemporary intervention that gives that element a new purpose. For an inherited style, change its context or meaning. For a process-led work, let handling show. For outdoor painting, decide whether nature is a subject or a collaborator. For mixed media, plan the roles and compatibility of the layers. For digital hybrids, define how image-making and handwork divide the work.
