Decorative garden balls can be made by covering a sturdy sphere with a mosaic or by casting a concrete sphere in a globe-shaped form. For a colorful, straightforward project, use flat glass gems on a bowling ball or thick glass lamp globe; if you prefer a plain sculptural finish, try the concrete method. In either case, choose materials labeled for your base and outdoor exposure—no single adhesive or finish guarantees year-round durability.
Choose a garden-ball project

These are different approaches, not a tested head-to-head comparison. Pick based on the finish you want and the materials you can handle.
Make a mosaic garden ball with glass gems
Gather the materials
- A sturdy bowling ball or thick glass lamp globe.
- Flat-backed glass gems; the tutorial uses 200 as an example quantity, not a fixed requirement.
- Spray paint for an optional background color.
- Exterior clear-drying silicone sealant or another adhesive whose label confirms compatibility with the base and outdoor exposure.
- For a design with wider spaces between pieces, exterior-suitable grout and sealer may also be used.
Prepare and assemble
- Clean the ball and let it dry completely. Follow the base and adhesive manufacturers’ directions for surface preparation.
- If you want a visible background between gems, apply spray paint suitable for the base and let it cure as its label directs.
- Lay out or mark a pattern before applying adhesive. Estimate gem quantity from the size of the ball and how closely you plan to place the pieces.
- Attach the gems with an adhesive labeled for the base material and intended outdoor exposure. Apply and cure it according to its instructions rather than assuming all silicone or craft adhesives behave alike.
- If the design has wider gaps, use grout and sealer only when their labels support the materials and outdoor conditions. Follow their application and curing directions.
One mosaic artist says silicone was their preference for outdoor balls because it is not water-soluble. That is a maker’s project account, not a universal comparison of adhesives. Cast a concrete sphere in a globe
A concrete sphere is a separate route from applying a mosaic covering. A published tutorial uses an old glass lamp globe or sphere as a form. Its author also tried a playground ball, but it did not preserve a perfectly round shape. The globe-form approach therefore has the clearer support when a round result matters; the source does not establish that every globe or casting method will work the same way. Protect yourself when working with cement
OSHA warns: “Wet portland cement can damage the skin because it is caustic, abrasive, and absorbs moisture.” Wear the skin and eye protection required by the cement product’s safety directions, avoid contact with wet mix and cement dust, and wash promptly if cement contacts your skin. Glass, tile, and stone can all provide a decorative covering. Match the adhesive, and any grout or sealer, to the particular covering, base, and outdoor conditions.
