An interactive sketchbook gives your hands something to do besides turn a page. Add a pocket for scraps, cut a small window, fold out a longer scene, set yourself a playful moving-image prompt, or combine drawing with collage and simple paper mechanisms. Each idea offers a concrete way into a blank spread without claiming to improve artistic ability by itself.

Start with a sketchbook you can alter
AccessArt’s approach uses an ordinary sketchbook, spare paper, tape and glue. Studio in a School’s K–5 materials also include construction paper, string or yarn, shoelace or ribbon, scissors and a drawing tool. Treat these as starting points rather than a tested materials specification: the cited teaching resources do not compare paper weights, adhesives, brands or media compatibility.

Leave room for pages to close, keep mechanisms away from the binding when possible, and test a small scrap if you plan to combine wet paint with adhesive or folded paper. If additions make the book difficult to shut, AccessArt suggests a ribbon or elastic band around it.

1. Add a pocket or envelope for collected material
A pocket turns the sketchbook into a temporary cabinet of curiosities. AccessArt recommends adding an envelope to encourage collecting; Studio in a School gives examples such as paper scraps, labels, wrappers and mail.
Make it
- Attach an envelope or fold a rectangle of paper into a pouch, leaving the top open.
- Secure only the edges with glue or tape so the opening remains usable.
- Collect small, flat items that genuinely catch your attention.
- For each item, add a quick note or drawing explaining what you noticed: a colour combination, typeface, texture, shape or memory.
The pocket can hold references for later drawings, but it can also be the page’s subject. Arrange the contents, sketch their silhouettes, or make a visual inventory before returning them to the envelope.

2. Cut a window or opening for a reveal
A cut-out changes what a page does: instead of presenting an image all at once, it frames or conceals part of another page. AccessArt describes cutting into a page as a way to see from a new viewpoint.

Plan the layers
- Choose a small opening and mark its position in pencil.
- Decide what should appear beneath it—a detail on the next page, a contrasting colour, or a partial image that becomes clear when the pages move.
- Cut the opening carefully, keeping the surrounding paper intact.
- Draw or paint the underlying page after confirming that the reveal aligns as intended.
Small shapes are easier to control than a large cut and leave more of the page’s structure intact. The source demonstrates the idea but does not prescribe a particular cutting-safety method or establish durability for different papers, so use your normal care with sharp tools and make a test opening if the book is valuable.

3. Fold an accordion insert or fold-out
An accordion insert lets a scene exceed the dimensions of a single spread. AccessArt specifically describes changing the page size and folding a page to fit the sketchbook.
Build a continuous strip
- Cut a strip of paper narrower than the sketchbook’s height and long enough for the sequence you want.
- Score or lightly crease alternating folds so the strip expands and contracts like an accordion.
- Tape or glue one end into the book, leaving the folded sections free to open.
- Draw across the folds, treating each panel as part of one panorama, timeline or unfolding story.
Use the closed view as a teaser and the opened view as the full scene. A city block can extend across several panels; a plant can progress from seed to bloom; a walk can become a map with changing landmarks.

4. Turn a playful prompt into a flipbook
Art of Education presents prompts from artist and educator Bob Kling, including “Draw what you hear” and “Make a flipbook of your car traveling.” Kling is quoted by Amanda Heyn in the April 14, 2017 article saying, “Your sketchbook should be both a journey and a playground,” and, “I want art students to get in the habit of sketching daily, and not just in class.”

- Choose one action that can change in small stages.
- Reserve a run of similarly sized pages or add a stack of narrow paper slips.
- Draw the subject in a slightly different position on each page.
- Flip the edges with your thumb to see whether the movement reads, then adjust the frames that jump.
Adapt the same structure to a pet crossing a room, a plant opening, or an expression shifting from surprise to calm. These are practical adaptations of the prompt format, not reported classroom trial results. A short sequence is enough; the point is to make starting specific and memorable.

5. Mix drawing with collage, writing and paper mechanisms
Interactive pages do not have to rely on one device. Studio in a School’s K–5 unit combines observation, collecting, story scenes and sketchbook journaling. The Art Gallery of Ontario describes an interactive sketchbooking class using watercolor, ink, graphite, flaps, spinning wheels and pop-ups. UAL’s overview notes that sketchbooks can contain notes, found objects, photographs, annotations and other visual references.
Layer a page with different jobs
- Observation: draw a real object, then add a written note about a detail you might otherwise forget.
- Collage: place a label, photograph or scrap beside the drawing and respond to its colour, texture or typography.
- Flap: hide a second view, annotation or continuation beneath a hinged piece of paper.
- Spinning wheel: use a rotating disk to reveal alternate colours, expressions, words or stages.
- Pop-up: reserve a small area for a raised form that changes the page’s silhouette when opened.
Give each layer a clear role. A flap might answer a question written on the page; a wheel might vary one feature; a collage fragment might supply the setting for a drawn figure. This keeps the spread readable instead of making every surface compete for attention.
Choose the right mechanism for your idea
Match the paper action to what you want the reader—or your future self—to do.
- Collecting: choose a pocket or envelope.
- Framing or surprise: choose a window, flap or reveal.
- Storytelling over time: choose an accordion or flipbook.
- Observation and annotation: combine drawing, writing and collage.
- Hands-on variation: add a wheel or pop-up when a more constructed page is worth the extra work.
Also weigh available space, page thickness and the media you intend to use. Simple paper and adhesive are the least demanding starting point; layered mechanisms require more clearance and may make the book harder to close. None of the cited sources establishes a universal best paper or glue, so let a small test page decide whether your chosen combination behaves as expected.
A low-pressure way to fill a blank spread
- Pick one action—store, reveal, unfold, flip or rotate.
- Choose one subject from your surroundings rather than inventing a whole project.
- Set up the paper structure before worrying about a finished drawing.
- Add one observation, sentence or collected fragment to anchor the page.
- Stop when the mechanism supports the idea; extra parts are optional.
The result can remain rough. An interactive sketchbook is a place to notice, test and return, not a requirement to produce a polished object on every page.
