To hole-punch a banner professionally, first decide whether you need a bare opening or a reinforced grommet. Mark the location on a hemmed or otherwise reinforced edge, use a punch matched to the grommet’s tube diameter, cut on a wood block, and set the grommet with its matching washer and die. A clean hole alone is not a durable hanging point in most vinyl banners.
Choose the right finish before you punch
Inspect the banner edge and identify how it will be mounted. A grommet (also called an eyelet) is appropriate when rope, hooks, clips or bungee cords will pass through the banner. If the banner must slide over a pole or rod, a pole pocket may be the better finish and avoids punching holes through the pocket area.
| Mounting need | Suitable finish | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Rope, hook or bungee attachment | Grommet in a reinforced hem | The punch, grommet, washer and setting die must be compatible. |
| Banner sliding over a pole or rod | Pole pocket | Do not place grommets where they would interfere with the pocket. |
| Temporary, light-duty placement | Bare punched hole only when the material and load permit | A plain hole can enlarge or tear, especially in unreinforced PVC. |
Gather the correct tools and materials
- The selected grommets or eyelets and their matching washers.
- A hole punch whose diameter matches the eyelet tube’s inside diameter.
- The kit’s cutting block, insert punch, setting die and base, or a compatible hand setter.
- A solid wood block to protect the punch and work surface.
- A ruler, square, pencil or removable marker, and measuring tape.
- A hemmed banner or suitable edge reinforcement. Acosta cautions that plain cut PVC can tear around an eyelet; reinforcement tape is not automatically equivalent to a proper hem for every load or installation.
For a few small eyelets, Acosta says manual pliers can be practical up to 10 mm. A bench press is generally more consistent for larger grommets or more than a handful of pieces, but the actual kit instructions take precedence.

Follow the mounting hardware’s layout
Use the banner or frame manufacturer’s specified positions whenever one exists. Keep holes in the reinforced border rather than the unsupported field of the banner, and leave enough material outside each hole for the grommet flange.
Keep the marks even
Measure from the same reference edge at every position. For standard hemmed banners, Banners.com gives 2 to 4 feet as typical grommet spacing (page updated July 15, 2026), but treats that as guidance rather than a universal rule. Banner size, material, wind exposure, frame design and the number of attachment points can require a different layout.
Check the face direction
Confirm which side should show the finished grommet face. BannerGrip’s frame instructions, for its own system, place the finished grommet face on the printed side.
Match the punch to the grommet
Measure or read the eyelet specification before cutting. Acosta advises using a punch with the exact inner diameter of the eyelet tube. An oversized opening can leave the eyelet loose; an undersized opening can distort the material or prevent the post from passing through.

“Using the red handled tool we supply or any standard ¼" hole punch, punch a hole in the hem about ¾" in from edge.”
That sentence is a BannerGrip frame-manual instruction for its system, not a universal banner standard. Its 1/4-inch punch and approximately 3/4-inch edge distance should not be copied to a different grommet size or banner construction without checking that hardware’s specifications.
How to punch the banner cleanly
- Lay the banner flat with the hem supported. Make sure the marked point is free of seams, folds and existing hardware.
- Place a solid wood block under the mark. Do not punch directly on concrete, metal or a finished tabletop.
- Align the punch vertically over the mark. A square alignment keeps the opening round and reduces stress on the hem.
- Strike or squeeze the punch according to the tool design until the waste slug is cut completely.
- Remove the cut disc and inspect the opening. If fibers or vinyl remain attached, trim them rather than forcing the grommet through at an angle.
If the edge is not hemmed or otherwise designed to carry load, stop before installing an eyelet. Reinforce the perimeter using a construction appropriate to the banner and its expected tension, or have the edge finished by a sign supplier.

Set the grommet with its washer
Most hand kits include a cutting tool, grommets, washers, an insert punch and a setting die or base. Shapes vary, so use the sequence supplied with your kit. The common hand-setting sequence described by Banners.com is:
- Place the grommet post-up on the setting base.
- Center the punched banner hole over the post.
- Put the washer over the post with its rounded side facing up, unless your kit specifies another orientation.
- Position the setting punch squarely on the washer and strike it with controlled blows.
- Turn the punch about one-quarter turn between strikes, continuing until the grommet is snug and evenly rolled.
- Check both faces. The flange should lie flat, the washer should be captured, and the banner should not be crushed or cut by the metal.
Do not substitute a die from another grommet system merely because it appears to fit. An incorrect die can flare the post unevenly or damage the banner.

Hand punch and setter
Best for a small number of ordinary vinyl-banner grommets when you can support the hem and work carefully. It costs less than production equipment but depends on accurate alignment and consistent hammering.
Pliers or a small hand press
Useful for small eyelets and short runs. Acosta identifies manual pliers as an option for small eyelets up to 10 mm; confirm that your pliers accept the selected eyelet.

Bench press or professional finishing
A press gives more repeatable force and alignment for larger grommets, thick materials or more than a few banners. Consider a sign-finishing supplier when the edge is unreinforced, the banner will face significant wind load, or the quantity makes hand setting inconsistent.
Troubleshoot common failures
- The grommet spins or falls out: the hole may be oversized, the washer or die may be mismatched, or the post was not fully rolled.
- The vinyl tears from the hole: the edge may lack a suitable hem or reinforcement, the hole may be too close to the edge, or the banner is carrying more tension than its construction allows.
- The grommet is crushed: the punch was not square, the setting blows were excessive, or the wrong die was used.
- The hole looks ragged: the cutting surface was unstable, the punch was dull, or the material was not fully supported on a wood block.
- The banner hangs crooked: recheck measurements from a common reference edge and verify that opposing attachment points are at matching heights.
Final inspection before hanging
- Every hole is in the planned reinforced zone.
- The opening size matches the selected grommet system.
- Each washer is present and correctly oriented.
- The grommet face is on the intended side.
- Flanges are flat, captured and free of sharp edges.
- Attachment spacing suits the banner’s dimensions and installation conditions.
- No grommet is being asked to carry a load that the hem, material or mounting hardware cannot safely handle.
