Yes—you can make a polished gift topper from supplies you may already have at home. These are decorative gift bows, not archery bows: choose ribbon for a standard package, a fork bow for a tiny gift, paper when you have no ribbon, tissue paper for a gift bag, or fabric scraps for a rustic look.

None of the five methods requires sewing. The classic and fork bows are secured with knots, the paper bow uses double-sided tape, the tissue bow uses twine, and the scrap-fabric bow uses floral wire or a zip tie. The best choice depends on the gift’s size, the material available, and whether the bow needs to survive handling.

The measurements below are reliable starting recipes rather than universal rules. Ribbon width, paper weight, package size, and the fullness you want will all affect the finished bow.

Choose the right homemade bow

Bow style Best for Main supplies Strength Limitation Recommended attachment
Classic ribbon bow Most wrapped boxes, bags, baskets, and bottles Ribbon and scissors Traditional and adjustable Very soft ribbon can twist or collapse Tie it to package ribbon or use a small loop of tape
Tiny fork bow Jewelry gifts, cards, favors, small boxes, and bottles Narrow ribbon, fork, and scissors Small and relatively symmetrical Too small for most large packages Double-sided tape, a glue dot, or existing ribbon
Paper-strip bow Small and medium gifts or recycled wrapping Flexible paper, ruler, scissors, and double-sided tape Inexpensive and easy to color-match Less durable than a tied ribbon bow Permanent double-sided tape on the back
Tissue-paper bow Gift bags and lightweight packages Tissue paper, scissors, and twine Full, soft, and lightweight Can tear or crush easily Tie it to bag handles or package ribbon
Scrap-fabric messy bow Rustic gifts, baskets, large bags, and upcycled wrapping Fabric or ribbon scraps and floral wire or a zip tie Textural, forgiving, and scrap-friendly Bulky and intentionally irregular Use the remaining wire or a zip tie

This is a practical comparison of five different construction methods, not a standardized classification. A classic bow is tied; the paper and tissue versions are assembled toppers; and the messy bow is a bundle of loops rather than two perfectly balanced sides.

Before you start: choose materials that cooperate

Ribbon

  • For a fork bow: Choose narrow, flexible ribbon that can pass through the fork’s center gap and tie securely.
  • For a classic bow: Ribbon with some body is easier to shape than very soft satin. Silk, grosgrain, velvet, and other ribbons can work for a basic bow, but wider ribbon creates a larger finished bow. The Knot’s basic bow guide uses approximately 15–20 inches of roughly 1-inch-wide ribbon as a starting point.
  • For a fuller bow: Wired ribbon holds upright loops better. Purdue Extension explains that wire gives wired or laminated ribbon additional support when you want a fluffy, sculpted shape. See Purdue Extension’s gift-wrapping guidance.
  • For a messy bow: Unwired ribbon, fabric strips, and burlap are easier to combine into a loose, rustic bundle.

Paper

Use flexible paper: copy paper, magazine pages, wrapping paper, or light scrapbook paper. Heavy cardstock is not automatically better. It may resist the curved loops and crease instead of bending smoothly; Jennifer Maker’s paper-bow instructions specifically recommend paper that can bend easily.

Fasteners

Keep double-sided tape for paper, twine or string for tissue, and floral wire or a zip tie for fabric scraps. Hot glue is optional for some decorative versions, but it is not necessary for any of the five methods below.

1. Make a classic ribbon bow

Best for: a standard wrapped box, gift bag, basket, bottle, or any package that needs a familiar polished topper.

You’ll need

  • Ribbon
  • Scissors
  • Optional ruler
  • Optional narrow ribbon, pipe cleaner, or wire for extra support

How much ribbon to cut

If you are making a separate bow from approximately 1-inch-wide ribbon, start with 15–20 inches, following the measurement used by The Knot. Use more for wider ribbon, longer tails, or a larger package.

If you are tying the bow directly onto the package, Hallmark Channel suggests wrapping the ribbon around the package four times as a starting estimate before cutting. This is only a guide: a deep or oversized box will need more ribbon.

Steps

  1. Cut the ribbon to your starting length. Leave one tail hanging and make the first loop.
  2. Twist the ribbon at the center so the intended front side faces outward.
  3. Make the second loop. If you are using a ribbon with a distinct front and back, twist the longer end twice before forming the second loop, as The Knot recommends.
  4. Cross one loop over the other and pass it through the center opening, just as you would tie a shoelace.
  5. Pull the center knot snug. Do not flatten the loops.
  6. Tug each loop and tail until the two sides look balanced.
  7. Trim the tails diagonally or cut a V-shaped notch into each end.

Attach it to the gift

The most secure option is to tie the bow directly into the ribbon already wrapped around the package. For a separate bow, use a small loop of double-sided tape on the back, or tie it to an existing ribbon, bag handle, or bottle neck with narrow ribbon.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix common problems

  • One loop is larger: Loosen the center knot, resize both loops, and retighten it.
  • The ribbon is twisted: Undo the knot and deliberately rotate the ribbon before making the next loop.
  • The bow collapses: Switch to wired ribbon or stiffer grosgrain, or reinforce the center with a small piece of wire or a pipe cleaner.
  • The tails are uneven: Balance the loops first, then trim the tails last.
  • The bow overwhelms the gift: Use narrower ribbon before trying to reduce the number of loops. Scale is controlled more by ribbon width than by knot technique.

2. Make a tiny bow with a fork

Best for: jewelry boxes, cards, gift tags, party favors, small packages, and bottles. The fork acts as a size guide, so this is a miniature bow rather than a substitute for a large package bow.

You’ll need

  • Narrow, flexible ribbon
  • A fork
  • Scissors

Doodle and Stitch uses approximately 30 centimeters of ribbon for its fork-bow method. Start there and adjust for longer tails or a wider fork.

YASEO 1 Inch Champaign Gold Solid Satin Ribbon for Gift Wrapping, 50 Yards
  • High quality single faced satin ribbon, 100% polyester fabric ribbon. The surface is smooth, shiny and comfortable to the touch, it is a good choice for craft ribbons
  • This style solid color satin ribbon width is 1 inch and length is 50 yards; Enough quantity to meet your needs, super cost-effective for you to save money
  • Bright Color ribbons, great color fastness; Bright and lively, this ribbon adds a lively atmosphere to gift wrapping or holiday decorations
  • Versatile ribbon, wide range of applications, especially for gift box packaging, invitations, floral design, handmade roses, festival and party decorations, baking packaging, bouquet ribbons, crafts, and more creative design
  • These wrapping ribbons and decorative ribbons are suitable for many occasions, birthday, party decoration, Mother's Day, Valentine's Day, Easter, Independence Day, Halloween, Christmas, New Year's Gift, scene setting, baby shower, etc

Steps

  1. Cut approximately 30 cm of narrow ribbon.
  2. Loop the ribbon around the fork so it spans the fork’s outer sides.
  3. Bring one tail underneath and up through the center gap between the tines.
  4. Bring the other tail through the same center gap from the opposite direction.
  5. Cross the two tails and tie a tight knot in the center. Keep one hand on the woven ribbon while tightening so it does not slip.
  6. Slide the bow off the fork.
  7. Trim the tails to the length you want.

DIY Joy also emphasizes tightening the center before removing the bow. If the bow falls apart as soon as it leaves the fork, the center knot was not tight enough or one tail did not pass correctly through the center gap.

Attach it to the gift

Use a small piece of double-sided tape, a glue dot, or a loop of narrow ribbon. You can also tie the fork bow directly to a bottle neck, gift tag, or ribbon already on the package.

3. Make a paper-strip gift bow

Best for: small and medium boxes, handmade wrapping, coordinated color schemes, and moments when there is no ribbon in the house.

You’ll need

  • Flexible paper such as copy paper, magazine paper, wrapping paper, or light scrapbook paper
  • Ruler
  • Scissors
  • Permanent double-sided tape
  • Optional extra paper for tails

Cut the strips

For a dependable starting recipe, cut three strips that are each 1.5 inches wide. Trim them to 11 inches, 9.5 inches, and 6 inches, following the measurements in Pipsticks’ paper-bow tutorial.

For tails, cut a fourth strip in half and notch the ends. For a no-waste version, use a colorful magazine page or leftover wrapping-paper scraps instead of cutting into a new sheet.

Steps

  1. Turn each measured strip into a loop by overlapping its ends and securing them with double-sided tape. Hide the tape inside the loop.
  2. Flatten the center of the two larger loops. Press only the center section; avoid creasing the curved sides.
  3. Layer the larger loop over the smaller loop and tape the layers together at their centers.
  4. Add the 6-inch loop at the center, either vertically or horizontally, to create the top layer.
  5. Attach the finished bow to the package with a larger piece of double-sided tape on the back.

Make the paper work

  • If the loops buckle: Use lighter paper or make the loops slightly narrower.
  • If the paper will not curve: Replace heavy cardstock with copy paper, wrapping paper, magazine paper, or light scrapbook paper.
  • If tape shows: Put it inside the loop or use smaller pieces.
  • If the bow will not stay attached: Use a larger piece of permanent double-sided tape, or make a small loop of removable tape on the back if the wrapping surface allows it.
  • If the bow looks flat: Re-round the loops with your fingers instead of pressing them completely flat.

This assembled paper topper works especially well on a narrow gift or wine bottle because it can be attached to the neck or shoulder rather than centered on a broad box. Pipsticks specifically shows paper bows as an option for wine bottles.

4. Make a tissue-paper fan or pom-pom bow

Best for: gift bags, lightweight boxes, birthdays, baby showers, weddings, and any package that needs a soft, oversized topper.

You’ll need

  • One sheet of tissue paper for the simple version
  • Scissors
  • Twine, string, or baker’s twine

Simple one-sheet version

  1. Fold one sheet of tissue paper in half lengthwise.
  2. Fold it in half again in the opposite direction.
  3. Cut along both folded seams to create four equal sheets. Stack them.
  4. Accordion-fold the stack in pleats approximately 1 inch wide.
  5. Fold the pleated stack in half to locate the center.
  6. Round or point both ends with scissors. Rounded ends create a softer pom-pom; pointed ends create a more starburst-like shape.
  7. Tie the center tightly with twine. Leave extra twine on both sides so you can attach the bow.
  8. Separate the tissue layers one at a time, pulling each layer gently toward the center.
  9. Fluff the two sides until the bow is full.
  10. Tie the bow to the gift-bag handles or to ribbon around the package.

This one-sheet, four-layer approach—with approximately 1-inch pleats and twine at the center—is based on Southern Crush at Home’s tissue-paper bow tutorial.

For a larger, fuller topper

Use four sheets measuring 18 by 26 inches. Paper & Stitch trims approximately 5–6 inches from one end, pleats the stack in roughly 1-inch folds, rounds the ends, ties the center, and separates the layers carefully.

More layers create more fullness, but they also make the bow harder to fluff without tearing. Use the smaller version for a modest gift bag and the fuller version when the topper should be the main decoration.

Prevent tearing

Tissue paper most often tears while the layers are being separated. Thin or inexpensive tissue is especially vulnerable. Work slowly from the center outward, lifting one layer at a time instead of pulling sharply from the edges. Southern Crush at Home also warns about tearing during this step.

Attach it securely

Tie the tissue bow to the handles of a gift bag or to package ribbon. Do not rely on a single small piece of tape stuck to delicate tissue. Leaving extra twine during construction gives you a built-in attachment point.

5. Make a scrap-fabric “messy” bow

Best for: rustic wrapping, baskets, large gift bags, holiday packages, fabric-wrapped gifts, and anyone with leftover fabric, ribbon, or burlap.

The irregularity is intentional. Unlike a classic bow, this design does not depend on two identical loops, so it is forgiving when the materials vary in width and texture.

You’ll need

  • Cotton fabric scraps, unwired ribbon, or burlap
  • Scissors
  • Approximately 4–5 inches of floral wire or one zip tie

Steps

  1. Cut the fabric, ribbon, and optional burlap into strips approximately ¼–½ inch wide.
  2. Wrap the strips around two or more fingers. Tighter wrapping makes a smaller bow; looser wrapping makes a larger one.
  3. Slide the bundle off your fingers while keeping the center pinched.
  4. Wrap 4–5 inches of floral wire around the center and twist it tightly. A zip tie is an alternative if you do not have wire.
  5. Cut through the loops on both sides of the bundle.
  6. Hold the wire as a handle and shake or separate the strips to open the bow.
  7. Pull the strips into a loose bouquet shape and trim the ends to even the outside silhouette.
  8. Fluff the bow until it looks full, then use the remaining wire to attach it to the gift.

Southern Crush at Home’s messy-bow method uses ¼- to ½-inch strips and floral wire, then cuts the loops open and fluffs the bundle.

Adjust the texture

  • Too thin: Add more strips before cutting the loops.
  • Too chaotic: Use fewer materials and trim the outer strips.
  • Too bulky: Wrap around fewer fingers or use shorter strips.
  • The center loosens: Twist the wire more tightly or use a zip tie.
  • The fabric frays: Keep the fraying for a rustic effect, or switch to tightly woven cotton that sheds less.

Attach the bow according to the package

Package situation Best approach
Wrapped box Tie a classic bow directly into the package ribbon, or attach a separate paper or fork bow with tape.
Gift bag Tie a tissue bow to the handles. Use ribbon or wire for a fabric bow.
Wine bottle or narrow container Tie a fork bow or attach a paper bow around the neck or shoulder.
Large package Use fabric scraps or wired ribbon. Do not try to scale a miniature fork bow into a large topper.
Glossy wrapping Test adhesive on an inconspicuous spot first. A tied ribbon or wire attachment avoids a tape problem.

Troubleshooting homemade bows

The ribbon’s front side keeps turning inward

Twist the ribbon at every turn so the intended front remains visible. For a separate classic bow, deliberately rotate the longer end before forming the second loop. Wired or grosgrain ribbon is easier to control than very soft satin.

The fork bow unravels

Keep the woven ribbon pressed against the fork while bringing both tails through the center gap. Tie the center knot as tightly as possible before sliding the bow off. If the ribbon is wide or stiff, use a narrower one.

The paper bow will not hold its curve

The paper is probably too heavy, the loops are too wide, or the center has been creased too aggressively. Use flexible paper and press only the center. Jennifer Maker’s paper-bow guidance explains why heavy cardstock can be difficult for looped shapes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The tissue bow tears while fluffing

Separate one layer at a time from the center outward. Leave the outer edges alone until the inner layers are open. If the tissue is very thin, use fewer layers or choose better-quality tissue.

The bow looks flat

For ribbon, reshape the loops with your fingers or switch to wired ribbon. For paper, round the loops instead of flattening them. For tissue and fabric, pull individual layers or strips toward the center to build volume.

The topper will not stay on the gift

Match the fastener to the material. Use double-sided tape for paper, twine for tissue, and wire or a zip tie for fabric. A small topper attached to a package ribbon is generally more reliable than tape alone on a textured or glossy surface.

Which bow should you make?

  • For a tiny gift: Make the fork bow.
  • For a standard wrapped box: Make the classic ribbon bow.
  • If you have paper but no ribbon: Make the paper-strip bow.
  • For a gift bag: Make the tissue-paper bow and tie it to the handles.
  • For rustic or upcycled wrapping: Make the messy fabric bow.
  • For a package that will be handled or transported: Choose wired ribbon or a fabric bow secured with wire. A flat paper bow is more practical than a tall tissue topper for a package that needs to be packed tightly.

These durability recommendations are practical material judgments, not laboratory-tested shipping results. Tissue bows crush easily, paper bows can crease, and fuller bows are best made close to the time they will be displayed or stored loosely where nothing presses down on them.

Useful alternatives when supplies are limited

Old T-shirt bow

If you have no fabric scraps, repurpose an old long-sleeve T-shirt. Cut the sleeve into strips, bundle them, and reuse the sleeve cuff as the center band. Southern Crush at Home’s T-shirt-bow version uses scissors and makes hot glue and decorative embellishments optional.

Tulle bow

For wedding, shower, or other soft formal wrapping, use tulle instead of ribbon. Wrap it around your fingers approximately 15–20 times for a small-to-medium bow, tie the center, cut the loops, and trim the result into a rounded poof. The full method is shown by Southern Crush at Home’s tulle-bow tutorial.

Sewn reusable fabric bow

If you have a sewing machine and want a more structured topper, a sewn fabric bow is another option. WeAllSew’s fabric-bow tutorial covers a sewn version and fabric choices. It takes more preparation than the no-sew messy bow but can be stored and reused as a dedicated gift accessory.

Oversized wired-ribbon bow

For a very large present, use wired ribbon and several loops rather than enlarging the fork or paper method. Wired edges can be shaped and supported for a dramatic bow; The Knot discusses wired ribbon for fuller bows. Multi-loop constructions are also common in decorative bows, but they require more ribbon and assembly than the five quick gift-topper methods here.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Safety and child-friendly adaptations

The fork, classic ribbon, paper, and tissue versions can be adapted for children with age-appropriate supervision. Scissors, floral wire, and zip ties require care, and hot glue should never be treated as automatically child-safe. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s Art and Craft Safety Guide identifies hot-glue equipment as a craft-tool hazard requiring attention to burns and other injuries. Hot glue is optional here, so use tape, knots, twine, or wire whenever those methods are sufficient.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the easiest homemade bow for a last-minute gift?

For a standard package, use the classic ribbon bow. If the gift is very small, the fork bow is quicker to size and produces a neat miniature topper. Neither requires glue or sewing.

Can I make a gift bow without ribbon?

Yes. Use the paper-strip bow with flexible paper and double-sided tape, the tissue-paper bow with twine, or the messy bow from fabric, burlap, an old T-shirt, or other scraps.

What homemade bow is best for a gift bag?

A tissue-paper bow is usually the best match because it is lightweight and full. Tie it to the bag handles with the extra twine left from the center rather than relying on tape stuck to the tissue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I make a homemade bow that will not be crushed easily?

Choose wired ribbon or a fabric bow secured with floral wire or a zip tie. Paper is a reasonable flatter option, while tissue is the most delicate and should be fluffed close to gifting.

The Bottom Line

Make the classic ribbon bow for an everyday package, the fork bow for a tiny gift, the paper bow when you have no ribbon, the tissue bow for a gift bag, and the messy scrap bow for rustic texture. Use the lightest, most flexible material that suits the size of the gift, and attach the finished bow with the fastener best suited to that material.
