The best 2025 laptop for demanding graphic-design work is the 16-inch MacBook Pro with M4 Pro. For lighter workloads, the 15-inch MacBook Air with M4 offers better value; Windows users should look at the ASUS ProArt P16, while illustrators may prefer the convertible ASUS ProArt PX13. The Lenovo Legion Pro 7i Gen 9 is the strongest fit for designers who also game, render 3D, or edit video.
This is a 2025 model-year roundup, based on the published testing and comparisons linked below. It should not be read as a definitive 2026 ranking: newer models, including Apple’s M5 MacBook Pro, may now be relevant. Prices, availability, and configurations also vary by country and retailer.
Quick comparison

What makes a laptop good for graphic design?
Adobe’s recommended requirements are a useful floor, not a complete buying guide. Adobe recommends 16GB or more RAM for Photoshop and Illustrator, a fast SSD, and compatible graphics hardware. Photoshop also recommends 100GB of available storage. See Adobe’s Photoshop requirements and Illustrator requirements.
- Display: Look for accurate color, a wide gamut, useful brightness, and manageable reflections. Resolution and refresh rate matter, but neither proves color accuracy.
- Memory: 16GB is a practical minimum. Choose 24GB or 32GB for large Photoshop files, browser tabs, linked assets, and several Adobe apps at once. Heavy video, 3D, or motion work can justify 64GB.
- Storage: A 512GB SSD is workable for students using cloud storage. Professionals should generally target 1TB; 2TB or more is useful for local photo libraries, video, and project archives.
- Graphics: Integrated graphics can handle Illustrator, InDesign, web design, branding, and moderate Photoshop work. A discrete GPU becomes more valuable for 3D, animation, video, GPU-accelerated effects, very large canvases, and gaming.
- Cooling: Sustained performance depends on thermals. A fast processor or GPU may become hot and loud during long exports.
- Ports: Check support for external monitors, drawing tablets, card readers, external SSDs, docks, and older USB-A accessories.
- Compatibility: Your existing fonts, plugins, peripherals, and specialist applications may favor macOS or Windows.
Mac or Windows for graphic design?
macOS is attractive for its consistent hardware-software integration, strong battery performance, quiet premium laptops, and high-quality MacBook displays. The disadvantages are fixed memory and storage, fewer ports on the MacBook Air, and possible incompatibility with Windows-only plugins, peripherals, or 3D tools.
Windows offers more choice in screen size, graphics hardware, memory, storage, and price. It is the better ecosystem for NVIDIA GPU acceleration, gaming, many 3D applications, and pen-enabled convertibles. The trade-offs can include shorter battery life, more fan noise, greater heat, and significant display differences between configurations. Windows ARM laptops also require compatibility checks for older plugins, drivers, and specialist software.

1. Apple MacBook Pro 16-inch with M4 Pro: best overall
Best for: professional Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign work; large files; multitasking; and designers who need strong performance away from a desk.
Laptop Mag selected the 16-inch M4 Pro MacBook Pro as its best overall graphic-design laptop, citing its combination of display quality, performance, and battery life. RTINGS similarly praises the related MacBook Pro family for its Mini-LED display, factory calibration, keyboard, trackpad, ports, and M4 Pro or M4 Max performance. The 16-inch version makes the most sense when a larger canvas matters more than maximum portability.
Choose at least 24GB or 36GB unified memory for demanding professional use where the budget allows, and 1TB storage if active projects will live on the laptop. Exact configurations vary by region.
Why buy it: It is the most balanced choice here for demanding 2D design, color-conscious work, multitasking, and occasional video, animation, or 3D.
Why skip it: It is expensive, large, and not upgradeable. Designers producing simple layouts, logos, or social graphics may not benefit from the extra cost over the MacBook Air.
2. Apple MacBook Air 15-inch with M4: best value
Best for: students, early-career designers, branding, layout, Figma, Canva, Illustrator, InDesign, and moderate Photoshop work.
The 15-inch M4 MacBook Air delivers a sharp, colorful display and strong portability without the price of the Pro line. It is a sensible choice for lighter-to-moderate design work, especially when battery life and low weight matter more than sustained rendering performance.
Start with 16GB memory; 24GB is preferable for large Photoshop files and multitasking. A 512GB SSD is usable, but 1TB is more comfortable for professional projects. The Air’s two USB-C ports may require a dock for an external display, storage, tablet, and other peripherals.

Why buy it: It is the most approachable option for schoolwork, web design, layout, and everyday Adobe use.
Why skip it: Its fanless design is not ideal for sustained heavy rendering, and its integrated graphics are less suitable for serious 3D, video, or animation. Upgrading memory and storage can also bring its price close to a MacBook Pro.

3. ASUS ProArt P16: best Windows creator laptop
Best for: Windows-based Adobe work, video editing, 3D, gaming, and buyers who want an OLED display with a discrete NVIDIA GPU.
The ProArt P16 is a creator-focused Windows laptop rather than a general-purpose gaming machine. Laptop Mag’s reviewed configuration used an AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 processor, 32GB RAM, and an RTX 4070 GPU. In that test configuration, Laptop Mag recorded 85.5% DCI-P3 coverage, a Geekbench 6 multicore score of 15,286, and a 4K-to-1080p HandBrake result of 3 minutes 15 seconds. Those figures apply to that reviewed configuration and test method, not every P16 SKU.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRTINGS highlights the sharp 4K-plus OLED display, optional RTX 4060 or RTX 4070 graphics, pen support, and programmable touch-sensitive dial. It also notes that the laptop becomes hot and loud under load and has much weaker light-use battery life than the MacBook Pro. Tom’s Guide measured 9 hours 32 minutes in its battery test, compared with 18:31 for an M4 MacBook Pro and 20:46 for an M4 Pro MacBook Pro. These are lab results, not guaranteed runtimes.
Why buy it: It combines Windows compatibility, high-resolution OLED, substantial memory options, and discrete graphics in a design-oriented chassis.
Why skip it: Frequent travelers may dislike its heat, fan noise, and shorter battery life. OLED also brings reflection and long-term burn-in considerations. Confirm the exact screen, GPU, storage, and whether a stylus is included.
4. ASUS ProArt PX13: best 2-in-1 for stylus work
Best for: illustrators, vector artists, concept sketching, annotations, presentations, and travelers who want one device instead of a laptop plus drawing tablet.
The PX13’s convertible design makes it the differentiated choice in this list. It can be used as a conventional laptop or folded into a pen-oriented setup, while retaining more general-purpose performance than a basic tablet computer.
Do not confuse a touchscreen with a complete professional drawing setup. Before buying, verify pressure sensitivity, palm rejection, compatible pen standards, stylus inclusion, and whether the software you use supports the configuration. Retail bundles can differ.
Why buy it: It provides flexibility for sketching and direct manipulation of vector or raster work.
Why skip it: The 13-inch screen can feel cramped for complex Photoshop or Illustrator panels. Convertible hinges and pen input also do not automatically make it a replacement for a dedicated pen display. Sustained workloads may produce more heat and noise in the smaller chassis.

Best for: designers who also game, edit video, render 3D, or need strong discrete-GPU performance.
Laptop Mag selected the Legion Pro 7i Gen 9 as its best gaming laptop for graphic design because it combines high performance with a vivid, color-capable display. Its appeal is practical: a gaming laptop can offer more GPU performance for the money than a thin premium creator laptop.
Choose the exact configuration carefully. Prioritize a suitable color gamut and brightness, 32GB RAM, at least 1TB SSD storage, and an NVIDIA GPU appropriate to your 3D or video workload. Legion displays vary by SKU, so the model family name alone is not enough.

Important buying checks
Color accuracy is more than OLED or 4K
Display specifications must be read together. sRGB, DCI-P3, and Adobe RGB are different color spaces; coverage of one does not prove coverage of another. A wide-gamut screen is not automatically accurate, and high resolution does not guarantee correct color. For color-critical print work, use calibration and consider a calibrated external monitor.
Integrated graphics can be enough
You do not need an RTX GPU for every design task. Illustrator, InDesign, logos, web design, branding, and moderate Photoshop projects can work well on integrated graphics. Discrete graphics become more important for GPU-accelerated effects, very large files, animation, video, 3D, and high-resolution multi-display setups.
Do not buy only by processor name
CPU and GPU labels do not tell the entire story. Cooling determines how long a laptop can sustain performance, while memory capacity affects how comfortably Photoshop, Illustrator, a browser, linked assets, and fonts can remain open together. Benchmark results can also vary by application: Tom’s Guide found that the ProArt’s RTX 4070 helped in GPU-oriented work while Apple’s chips performed better in some Photoshop or CPU-sensitive tests.

Check the number and type of USB-C, Thunderbolt, USB-A, HDMI, DisplayPort, and SD-card connections. Also verify how many external displays the laptop supports at the resolution you need. A MacBook Air buyer using a monitor, tablet, camera card, and external SSD may need a dock.
Account for non-upgradeable components
Many premium laptops have soldered memory and non-replaceable storage. If you expect to keep the laptop for several years, buying enough RAM at the outset is usually more useful than relying on a future upgrade. Windows models may offer replaceable SSDs, but this varies by exact model.
Which one should you buy?
- Choose the MacBook Pro 16-inch M4 Pro for the strongest all-round professional design experience and a large, high-quality display.
- Choose the MacBook Air 15-inch M4 for school, freelance, branding, layout, and moderate Adobe work where value, portability, and battery life matter most.
- Choose the ASUS ProArt P16 for Windows compatibility, OLED, NVIDIA graphics, and creative work that extends into video or 3D.
- Choose the ASUS ProArt PX13 if drawing directly on a convertible display is central to your workflow.
- Choose the Lenovo Legion Pro 7i Gen 9 if gaming, rendering, or GPU-heavy work is as important as graphic design.
Whichever model you choose, verify the exact regional configuration before buying. Memory, storage, display, GPU, stylus bundles, ports, price, and availability can all change within the same laptop family.
FAQ
How much RAM do I need for graphic design?
16GB is a practical minimum for a new design laptop. Choose 24GB or 32GB for larger Photoshop files, multitasking, or video work; heavy motion graphics and 3D can justify 64GB.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do I need a dedicated graphics card for Photoshop or Illustrator?
Not for every workflow. Integrated graphics can be enough for Illustrator, InDesign, web design, branding, and moderate Photoshop work. A discrete GPU is more useful for 3D, animation, video, GPU-accelerated effects, and very large canvases.
Is a MacBook Air powerful enough for graphic design?
The 15-inch M4 MacBook Air is suitable for students and lighter-to-moderate work such as layout, branding, web design, and everyday Adobe use. Its fanless design is less suited to sustained heavy rendering.
Is OLED the best display for graphic design?
OLED can offer a sharp, vivid image, but panel type alone does not guarantee color accuracy. Check gamut and calibration, and consider a calibrated external monitor for color-critical print work.
How much storage should I choose?
A 512GB SSD can work for students who rely on cloud storage. A 1TB SSD is more practical for professional projects stored locally; larger photo, video, or archive libraries may call for more.
