For Christmas wreaths and arrangements, choose a preservation method by the result you want: air drying and silica gel keep flowers dimensional, pressing makes them flat for crafts, and glycerin is chiefly useful for foliage. Air drying is simple but takes weeks; silica gel is faster and can better retain a bloom’s shape. None makes flowers permanent, and the results vary by plant and drying conditions.

Choose a method for the decor you’re making
| Technique | Result | Approximate time | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Air drying | Dimensional, dried stems and blooms | About two to three weeks, a general estimate from University of Illinois Extension | Simple, low-cost drying when some change in color or shape is acceptable |
| Silica-gel drying | Dimensional flowers; can help retain shape and color | About three to seven days according to Iowa State University Extension; another Iowa State guide estimates three to eight days depending on flower thickness | Delicate blooms where preserving their form matters |
| Pressing | Flat flowers and foliage | Not stated by the cited extension sources | Framed displays and paper crafts |
| Glycerin | Pliable, lifelike foliage | Not stated by the cited extension sources | Leaves rather than whole flowers |
These are working estimates, not guarantees. Harvest stage, species, flower thickness, drying conditions, and storage all affect the result.
1. Air-dry bunches for a simple dimensional result
Air drying needs little equipment and works well when you want stems that can be arranged into a wreath or display. The University of Illinois Extension gives two to three weeks as a general drying estimate.

- SILICA GEL FLOWER DRYING KIT - Includes silica sand flower drying 10 LBS; gloves; soft brush; spatula; masks; instruction manual. Place them in an airtight container away from humidity and direct sunlight to maintain quality
- Remove unwanted leaves and foliage from the stems.
- Gather stems into small bunches and secure them with a tie or rubber band.
- Hang the bunches upside down in a warm, dry, dark place with good air circulation.
- Allow them to dry fully before arranging or storing them.
Keep the flowers out of direct sunlight, which can fade them. Some blooms shrink or lose color as they dry, so this method is less suitable when retaining a flower’s original appearance is the priority.
2. Use silica gel when flower shape matters
Silica gel is a fast desiccant option for delicate flowers. Iowa State University Extension describes drying times of about three to seven days in its 1998 guide; its 1996 guide gives three to eight days and notes that thickness affects timing. Check the flowers rather than treating either estimate as a fixed deadline.

- All in One Kit: Package includes high-quality 5lbs silica gel flower drying, an airtight container, a brush, and a user manual. The flower drying silica is stored in double sealed bags for long-term preservation and protection, ensuring the product arrives in the best condition
- Fine Crystals Less Than 1mm: Lightweight silica gel for drying flowers puts less pressure on fresh flowers, making it easier to reach between the petals. Flowers can be dried in 3-6 days, maintaining their natural shape, preserving their vibrant colors with minimal discoloration
- Safe and Non-toxic Formula: Unlike blue silica sand, Viktairy orange flower drying silica gel crystals are Cocl2-free, dust-treated, and odorless. They absorb moisture naturally without relying on chemical reactions
- Color Indicating Technology: Flower drying preservation kit contains 10% orange crystals and 90% clear crystals. When the orange crystals absorb moisture, they turn dark green, indicating that the silica sand is saturated and needs to be recharged
- Rechargeable and Reusable: To reactivate the saturated silica gel beads, spread it evenly on a baking pan to form a thin layer. Place it in an oven at 200-250F for 0.5 to 1 hour, or microwave it for about 10 minutes at 700w until all green crystals turn orange again
- Choose a dedicated non-food container with a tight-fitting lid.
- Carefully cover the flowers with flower-drying silica gel according to the product’s instructions, supporting delicate petals as you work.
- Close the container while the flowers dry, then check them periodically for dryness.
- Remove the flowers gently once dry; handle them carefully to avoid crushing brittle petals.
Use silica gel only as its product label directs. It can be reused after drying or recharging when the manufacturer’s instructions permit it.
3. Press flowers and foliage for flat decorations
Pressing is the right choice for framed flowers, cards, and paper decorations—not for a three-dimensional wreath bloom. Illinois and Purdue Extension describe pressing between absorbent layers under even pressure; a heavy book is a simple alternative to buying a wooden flower press.

Flat blooms such as pansies are suitable candidates. Fleshy flowers and flowers with very thin petals may not press as neatly, so expect variation rather than a uniform result.

Glycerin is better treated as a foliage technique than as a way to preserve whole flowers. University of Illinois Extension identifies it for leaves; foliage treated this way can remain pliable and lifelike, while the method is not a reliable choice for soft petals. Follow the directions for the specific product or extension procedure you use; the cited guidance does not establish a complete flower-specific recipe.

5. Combine preserved botanicals with fresh wreath materials
Dried flowers can be worked into a traditional balsam Christmas wreath, a seasonal use described by University of Maine Cooperative Extension. Choose dimensional dried stems for texture, or pressed leaves and flowers for flat craft details. Add preserved material gently: dried petals and stems can be brittle.
Preservation does not establish a particular lifespan for a wreath or arrangement. Keep materials dry, store them carefully, and avoid promising that they will retain their color or shape for a set number of months or years.
Supplies: what you need and what you can skip
- Air drying: ties or rubber bands are enough to bundle stems; a warm, dry, dark, ventilated hanging space matters more than specialized equipment.
- Silica gel: flower-drying silica gel and a dedicated airtight, non-food container are needed for this method.
- Pressing: absorbent paper and a heavy book can work; a wooden flower press is optional.
- Glycerin: use only the product and procedure intended for foliage preservation.
