For a smoother spray-painted finish, prepare a clean, dry surface, choose paint and primer that suit the material, and apply the paint in steady, slightly overlapping light passes. Then follow the can’s directions for distance, drying, recoating, cleanup, and safety. Spray distances and other conditions vary by product, so the label on your can—not a universal rule—should guide the job.
1. Prepare the surface before spraying
Paint adheres more reliably to a surface that is clean and dry. Remove dirt and loose material, and mask nearby areas with painter’s tape and a drop cloth. Sand glossy surfaces only when the product instructions call for it; sanding is not a universal requirement.
For bare wood or metal, primer may be recommended. Rust-Oleum’s Glitter Spray Paint label, for example, especially recommends primer on those materials, while the company’s furniture guidance also describes sanding and priming for suitable projects. Check the chosen paint’s directions before adding primer or sanding.
Lead warning: Scraping or sanding old paint can release toxic lead dust. Follow appropriate precautions and do not dry-sand or scrape old paint casually.
#1 Best Overall
- Ideal for use on interior/exterior surfaces including wood, plastic, plaster, metal, masonry and unglazed ceramic
- Oil-based formula resists chips and provides long-lasting protection
- Dries to touch in 20 minutes and covers up to 12 sq. ft. per can
- Durable formula provides excellent hide and goes on smoothly
- Ultra matte finish gives projects a no-shine, vintage appearance
2. Match the paint to the material and finish
Check the product description and label for the surface it covers, whether it is intended for indoor or outdoor use, and the finish it produces. A multi-surface claim applies to the named product, not to every aerosol paint: Rust-Oleum lists wood, plastic, metal, concrete, and vinyl for its Universal Satin spray paint.
Primer is a conditional choice. Use it when the paint directions recommend it for your surface, such as bare or porous material; do not assume every project needs it. For a simple supply setup, gather compatible spray paint, sandpaper if preparation requires it, a lint-free cloth, painter’s tape, and a drop cloth. Add primer only if the product guidance supports it.

3. Control the spray pass
- Shake the can as directed. Follow the label’s instructions for shaking and any other preparation before spraying.
- Hold it at the specified distance. Manufacturer directions differ: Rust-Oleum Universal Satin says 8–12 inches, its Glitter label says 12–14 inches, and its 2X Ultra Cover guidance says 10–16 inches. These are product-specific examples, not interchangeable recommendations.
- Keep moving. Sweep the can steadily across the surface rather than concentrating the spray in one spot.
- Overlap each pass slightly. Even overlap helps maintain consistent coverage; avoid stopping at the surface edge, where paint can build up.
4. Build coverage with light coats
Apply light, even passes and add coats only as the label directs. Multiple light coats are preferable to trying to hide missed areas under one heavy coat. Heavy application can contribute to drips and finish defects.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Let the coating dry according to its label before deciding how to correct the surface or apply another coat. The product directions determine the suitable recoat timing.

5. Follow drying, recoat, and safety directions
Drying time, recoat windows, and suitable temperature and humidity conditions vary by product. Check the can before starting and follow its stated conditions throughout application and drying. Recoating too soon, heavy coats, or unsuitable temperature and humidity can contribute to wrinkles or cracks.
Use the product’s safety label as well as its application directions. Rust-Oleum’s frosted-glass label, for instance, says, “Use only with adequate ventilation” and “Do not breathe dust, vapors or spray mist.” Work outdoors or in a well-ventilated area, keep fresh air moving during application and drying, and follow the label’s directions about ignition sources and respiratory protection. Do not treat one product label as a universal respirator prescription.

What to check when the finish goes wrong
- Drips or runs: Heavy application and pausing in one place are avoidable contributors. Use lighter coats and keep the can moving.
- Wrinkles or cracks: Check whether the coat was too heavy, whether you recoated before the label’s window, or whether temperature and humidity fell outside the stated conditions.
- Bubbles: On porous surfaces, a compatible primer may help when using gloss or semi-gloss paint. Confirm the paint and primer directions before applying either.
- Clogged nozzle: Use only the label’s cleanup instructions. The Glitter label directs users to remove and rinse its nozzle in an appropriate solvent and warns against inserting a pin or other object into the stem; other products may specify different cleanup methods.
Rust-Oleum’s guidance and labels are manufacturer instructions, not independent comparative testing. Product directions can change, so use the current label on the can you have.
