This build puts three battery-powered LED strands in a mason jar and uses an Arduino-compatible microcontroller to fade them in sequence. It is a soldered electronics project, not simply a matter of dropping a set of battery fairy lights into glass. If you want a steady decorative glow without wiring, a battery-powered strand or LED tealight is the simpler option.
What the programmable mason jar light does
The Make: project adapts a firefly-light design: red, white, and blue LED strands sit inside a glass jar, and a microcontroller fades each strand in turn before repeating the sequence. The strands’ original battery holders are removed because the circuit drives them instead. Make:’s project guide shows how the strands connect to the switch and battery contacts.
That change is important: this is not a universal wiring recipe for any fairy lights. The guide describes a particular combination of board, battery module, battery, switch, and strands. It does not establish that arbitrary lights, batteries, or controllers can be substituted safely or will work together.

- SPST toggle switch and USB cable
- Three battery-powered LED wire strands and a mason jar
- Short lengths of 22 or 24 gauge stranded wire
- Heat-shrink tubing, solder, soldering iron, wire cutters, and wire stripper
The battery and wire specifications above are parts named in the Make: materials list, not claims about expected runtime, brightness, or safety. Check the project guide and the instructions for the actual components before assembling the circuit.
How the wiring and soldering fit together
The strands’ battery units are removed, and their leads are wired into the switch-and-battery arrangement shown in the project guide. Follow that design rather than assuming wire colors or polarity are consistent across products.

Prepare thin, coated leads carefully
Some fairy-light strands use very thin copper leads with a resin coating, which can make soldering difficult. In its related fairy-light lamp guide, Adafruit suggests scraping the coating away with a utility knife before soldering. That advice applies to the type of wire discussed in that guide; check the instructions for your own strand and work cautiously with a sharp blade.

Test before insulating
Solarbotics’ jar-light guide advises checking that the lights work and confirming battery polarity before covering a solder joint with heat-shrink tubing or tape. In practice, leave the joint accessible until the connection has been checked, then insulate it. This is a useful assembly sequence, not a complete electrical safety standard.

Is a fairy-light jar safe?
The cited Make: project does not establish a safety certification, temperature test, or standards-based conclusion for operating its circuit inside a jar. Do not assume that any strand is suitable for enclosure simply because it is sold as decorative lighting. Use low-voltage components within their stated ratings, and follow the instructions supplied with the actual battery, light strand, and soldering equipment. The available project information does not support a universal safety claim or a specific runtime or heat figure.

If you want the look of lights in a jar but not programmable fading, a separate craft tutorial uses an AA-battery fairy-light strand and also suggests a battery LED tealight. That approach places a self-contained battery light in the jar, rather than adapting the strands to a microcontroller circuit.

The sources do not establish comparable brightness, runtime, or total cost for these options. The useful distinction is the build and control: choose the microcontroller circuit for sequential fading, or a self-contained battery light for a simpler jar decoration.
