In 2023, the web design trends with the most staying power were less about novelty than about making websites easier to use: accessibility-first design, mobile-specific experiences, performance-conscious media, preference-aware dark mode, and more credible, carefully personalized content. This is a retrospective on what designers were watching that year—not a forecast for 2026. The useful lesson is to adopt the problem-solving idea behind a trend, not its most fashionable look.
A design trend is worth attention when it changes how people understand, navigate, trust, or use a website—not simply when it changes the colors or shapes on screen. Oversized type, organic textures, 3D graphics, and animated transitions all appeared in 2023 trend coverage, but none is automatically an improvement. Their value depends on whether they serve the visitor’s task without compromising accessibility, speed, or clarity.

Here are five trends that captured more consequential shifts in web design in 2023, along with practical guidance on where they helped and where they could get in the way.
1. Accessibility-first design
Accessibility was increasingly treated as part of the design process rather than a finishing touch. That matters because a beautiful interface is not useful if people cannot navigate it with a keyboard, understand it with a screen reader, read its text, or complete its forms.
Practical accessibility work includes semantic headings and landmarks; visible keyboard focus; sufficient text and interface contrast; meaningful alternative text for informative images; captions or transcripts for media; clearly labelled fields; and error messages that explain how to recover. Do not communicate meaning through color alone, and do not hide essential information behind hover effects or motion.
WCAG 2.2 became a W3C Recommendation on October 5, 2023. It added nine success criteria beyond WCAG 2.1, including criteria concerning focus visibility, target size, dragging movements, and accessible authentication. For historical context, it was not the standard in force for the whole of 2023; designers working earlier that year generally had WCAG 2.1 as the contemporaneous reference. See the W3C summary of what is new in WCAG 2.2 and the full WCAG 2.2 Recommendation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAutomated checkers can find some problems, but a clean report does not establish that a site is accessible. Test keyboard operation, zoom, screen-reader interaction, and real tasks with people where possible. An overlay or automated score is not a substitute for fixing the underlying interface.
2. Mobile-specific, app-like experiences
Responsive design adapts a layout to different screen sizes. Mobile-specific design goes further: it considers touch, smaller viewports, mobile context, and the order in which someone needs information and actions. In 2023, coverage increasingly emphasized that distinction and drew inspiration from app interfaces.
For a service business, for example, a prominent tap-to-call action may be more useful on a phone than a desktop-oriented navigation item. A booking site might make its main booking action easy to reach; a store might simplify its mobile checkout. A compact sticky action bar can help when there is one clear primary task, but it should not cover page content, trap keyboard focus, or compete with several equally prominent buttons.
App-like transitions, bottom navigation, and progressive disclosure can make a focused mobile journey feel coherent. They can also make a site unfamiliar or harder to navigate when overused. Keep the information architecture conventional and understandable first. Do not require an unfamiliar gesture or animation to reveal essential content, and do not rely on hover as the only way to operate a control. Make icons understandable with visible labels or accessible explanations that work by keyboard and touch as well as pointer.

Video, animation, and interactive graphics can demonstrate a process, add context, or make a brand story more engaging. They also consume bandwidth, can delay the content people came to see, and may create barriers for visitors sensitive to motion or unable to hear audio. In 2023, the more useful version of the rich-media trend was not “put video everywhere,” but “make media earn its place and load responsibly.”

- Do not autoplay video with sound. If a muted visual plays automatically, provide controls and a straightforward way to pause it.
- Use a poster image so the page has a useful visual before a video loads. Lazy-load media that is below the fold when appropriate; web.dev explains video lazy-loading options, including approaches such as
loading="lazy"andpreload="none". - Provide captions for speech and a transcript or equivalent text when the video carries information. Important information should not exist only in moving images or audio.
- Respect reduced-motion preferences and avoid animation that distracts from reading or causes discomfort.
- Test on mobile devices and slower connections. A large hero video is a poor trade if it delays the page’s main message or action.
Core Web Vitals offer useful performance signals, not a complete measure of user experience. web.dev identifies 2.5 seconds as the recommended threshold for Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) and evaluates passing performance at the 75th percentile. A strong metric does not guarantee that a page is clear or usable, but a slow main-content load can undermine both. See web.dev’s Core Web Vitals guidance.
4. Dark mode and preference-aware interfaces
Dark interfaces moved beyond a niche aesthetic in 2023 as more sites and products responded to users’ theme preferences. A site can follow the operating-system or browser preference, offer a manual theme switch, or use a permanently dark brand identity. These are different choices, and a dark palette is not automatically more accessible or comfortable for every reader.
In CSS, the prefers-color-scheme media feature detects a user’s preference for a light or dark interface. See MDN’s reference. If you support both themes, audit the whole interface in each one: text, links, focus indicators, form controls, borders, charts, logos, illustrations, and embedded content. Do not simply invert every color. If visitors can choose a theme manually, preserve that choice rather than overriding it on every page load.
Dark mode is most useful when it reflects a real user preference or product need. It may be a poor fit when color accuracy is central to the content or the team cannot maintain both themes to the same standard. Claims that dark mode universally reduces eye strain or saves battery need qualification: any benefit depends on the user, display, content, and viewing conditions.

5. Trust-centered content, personalization, and AI-assisted workflows
Websites continued to use social proof and personalization to make experiences feel more relevant, while AI started appearing in design workflows. These developments share a responsibility: the interface should earn trust rather than simulate it.
Use evidence, not decoration, to build trust
Relevant reviews, testimonials with clear context, specific customer outcomes, transparent pricing, contact details, and understandable privacy or returns policies can answer real visitor concerns. Identify the source of ratings and reviews where possible. Use security and payment marks only when they are genuine and meaningful. Unverifiable customer logos, fabricated testimonials, fake urgency, or piles of checkout badges can erode trust instead of strengthening it.
Personalization can make content or recommendations more relevant, but it depends on suitable data and clear privacy practices. An experience that uses personal information should not surprise people about what was collected or why. Do not treat more data or more tailored messaging as an automatic improvement.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use AI as an assistant, not an authority
In 2023, AI was an emerging tool for generating design directions, drafting placeholder copy, exploring layout variations, assisting with code, and automating repetitive production tasks. Those possibilities were often discussed more confidently than the evidence justified. AI did not remove the need for design judgment or make accessibility, accuracy, and performance happen automatically.
Best Value
Use generated work as material to review, not as finished work to publish without checks. Generated copy can be inaccurate or generic; assets may raise provenance or licensing questions; personalization can introduce bias. Keep people responsible for user research, brand decisions, content review, accessibility testing, and claims made to visitors. A chatbot, recommendation engine, or generated image is not useful merely because it is labelled AI.
Visual techniques that were fashionable—but not universal priorities
Some 2023 coverage focused on hoverable iconography, social-proof badges, organic shapes and textures, or supplemental video. These can be useful techniques, but they are not requirements for a good website. Hover explanations should also work on touch and keyboard; textures should not reduce text contrast or add unnecessary image weight; and trust marks should be verifiable. A restrained CSS gradient or lightweight SVG may create visual interest without the cost or clutter of a large image.
Likewise, 3D graphics, experimental typography, micro-interactions, and animated navigation should be chosen for a specific communication or interaction benefit. If a decoration makes content harder to scan, delays the main action, or becomes difficult to maintain, its novelty is not enough reason to keep it.

Before adding a trend to a redesign, ask:
- User benefit: Does it make a real task clearer, easier, faster, or more trustworthy?
- Accessibility: Can people use it with a keyboard and zoom? Does it still make sense without color, hover, motion, or audio?
- Performance: Does it add page weight or delay the main content and primary action, especially on mobile?
- Fit and upkeep: Does it suit the audience and site goal, and can the team maintain it after launch?
- Resilience: Does the basic content or task remain available if an animation, JavaScript feature, or third-party service fails?
- Evidence: Can you assess the change through task completion, form completion, navigation errors, performance, accessibility defects, or support requests?
Do not assume that increased time on a page means people had a better experience; they may simply have struggled to find what they needed. Trends are most useful as prompts to solve a problem. The durable design decision is the one that improves the visitor’s experience and still works after the fashion passes.
