For repetitive layer work in desktop Photoshop, learn Ctrl/Cmd+J to duplicate, Ctrl/Cmd+G to group, Alt/Option+Ctrl/Cmd+G to clip, Alt/Option+[ and Alt/Option+] to move through the layer stack, and Shift+Ctrl/Cmd+Alt/Option+E to create a merged copy without flattening your editable layers. These Windows/macOS shortcuts reduce trips to the Layers panel; they do not make computationally intensive filters or exports run faster.

This guide is for Photoshop on Windows and macOS desktop. Photoshop on the web, Photoshop for iPad, and Photoshop Elements have different shortcut systems. Adobe’s shortcut reference and desktop shortcut PDF are useful checks if a command differs in your installed version.

The essential Photoshop layer shortcuts

In the table, Ctrl means Windows and Cmd means macOS. For example, Ctrl+J on Windows is Cmd+J on Mac. Confirm which layer or thumbnail is active before using a command: selection state and layer type can change what Photoshop acts on.

Task Windows macOS
Duplicate selected layer, group, or selected pixels Ctrl+J Cmd+J
Move selected pixels to a new layer Shift+Ctrl+J Shift+Cmd+J
Group selected layers Ctrl+G Cmd+G
Ungroup selected group Shift+Ctrl+G Shift+Cmd+G
Create or release a clipping mask Alt+Ctrl+G Option+Cmd+G
Hide selected layer Ctrl+, Cmd+,
Select next layer up/down Alt+] / Alt+[ Option+] / Option+[
Select top/bottom layer Alt+. / Alt+, Option+. / Option+,
Move selected layer up/down Ctrl+] / Ctrl+[ Cmd+] / Cmd+[
Bring to front / send to back Shift+Ctrl+] / Shift+Ctrl+[ Shift+Cmd+] / Shift+Cmd+[
Merge selected layers Ctrl+E Cmd+E
Merge visible layers Shift+Ctrl+E Shift+Cmd+E
Stamp visible layers to a new layer Shift+Ctrl+Alt+E Shift+Cmd+Option+E
Select all layers Alt+Ctrl+A Option+Cmd+A
Lock or unlock selected layers Ctrl+/ Cmd+/

Shortcuts can be customized, and Adobe’s pages may cover multiple Photoshop editions. If a combination fails, verify it in your desktop version’s keyboard-shortcut settings or use the corresponding menu command.

Duplicate layers and selections faster

Select a layer or group in the Layers panel and press Ctrl+J (Windows) or Cmd+J (Mac). Photoshop creates a copy above the selected item. Adobe also provides Layer > Duplicate Layer, which lets you name the copy and choose a destination document; see Adobe’s duplicate-layer guide.

If a selection is active, the same shortcut copies only the selected pixels from the active layer to a new layer. Use Shift+Ctrl+J or Shift+Cmd+J for Layer Via Cut, which moves selected pixels to a new layer instead of copying them. If the result is not what you expected, check whether a selection is active before repeating the command. These pixel operations may behave differently with Smart Objects and shape layers; use the appropriate layer or Smart Object menu command where needed.

Smart Object copies are not always independent

Duplicating an embedded Smart Object with Layer Via Copy can create a linked copy: edits to the original Smart Object can update the duplicate. To make an independent copy, use Layer > Smart Objects > New Smart Object Via Copy. Adobe explains this distinction in its Smart Object duplication documentation. In short, Ctrl/Cmd+J is a quick duplicate, not a guarantee of independent Smart Object content.

Select and navigate layers without repeated clicks

For a contiguous range, select the first layer, hold Shift, and select the last. For separate layers, hold Ctrl on Windows or Cmd on Mac while clicking each layer row. To select all layers, use Alt+Ctrl+A or Option+Cmd+A.

Once a layer is active, use Alt+] / Option+] to select the next layer upward, and Alt+[ / Option+[ to select the next one downward. Jump to the top with Alt+. / Option+., or to the bottom with Alt+, / Option+,. These commands change the active layer; they do not change its stacking order or move artwork on the canvas.

You can also select artwork from the canvas with the Move tool. In its Options bar, enable Auto Select and choose Layer to select the top layer containing pixels beneath your pointer, or choose Group to select its containing group. This is convenient in a dense composition, but overlapping artwork can make it easy to select the wrong item. Adobe’s layer-selection guide covers panel and canvas selection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Thumbnail reminder: clicking the layer row selects the layer. Clicking or modifier-clicking its thumbnail can target the layer’s pixels or transparency as a selection instead. If a command affects only a shape or part of a layer, check both for an active selection and which thumbnail has the focus.

Reorder layers from the keyboard

With the intended layer selected, press Ctrl+] / Cmd+] to move it up one position, or Ctrl+[ / Cmd+[ to move it down. Add Shift to bring it to the front or send it to the back: Shift+Ctrl+] and Shift+Ctrl+[ on Windows; Shift+Cmd+] and Shift+Cmd+[ on Mac.

Reordering changes the layer stack, not the artwork’s position on the canvas. It can change which pixels appear on top when layers overlap, and may alter the result of blend modes. Watch the Layers panel as you step through the stack, especially in a complex image. Adobe’s Layers panel guide explains layer ordering and visibility.

Group layers instead of merging them

Select related layers and press Ctrl+G or Cmd+G to put them in a group. To remove the selected group structure, use Shift+Ctrl+G or Shift+Cmd+G. A group keeps its constituent layers editable while letting you organize or move them together, apply a mask or adjustment to the collection, and collapse a crowded panel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Grouping is not merging. A group preserves the separate layers; merging combines their contents and removes that separation. If your goal is simply to tidy the panel or manipulate related artwork together, group first. See Adobe’s guide to layers and groups.

Create a clipping mask quickly

Put the content layer above a base layer, select the upper layer, and press Alt+Ctrl+G (Windows) or Option+Cmd+G (Mac). The upper layer becomes visible only within the opaque area of the base layer beneath it. For example, place a photo or texture above a text, shape, or silhouette layer, select the photo or texture, and clip it to the base.

A clipping mask uses another layer’s transparency; a layer mask is a grayscale mask attached to the target layer. They solve related but different problems. The base must be underneath the clipped layer, and additional clipped layers need to remain in the intended sequence. Adobe’s clipping-mask guide explains the stack behavior.

  • Nothing appears: Check that the base contains opaque pixels, is visible, and is below the intended layer.
  • The wrong content is clipped: Verify the active layer and the layer immediately beneath it before using the shortcut.
  • A clipping chain looks wrong: Inspect the order of successive layers and whether an intervening layer has changed the intended structure.

Hide, isolate, and lock layers

Press Ctrl+, or Cmd+, to toggle the selected layer’s visibility. To inspect one layer by itself, hold Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac) and click its eye icon. This hides the other currently visible layers; repeat the modifier-click on the eye column to restore the previous visibility state. Isolation is useful for checking a retouch, mask edge, texture, or adjustment. Before exporting, check the eye column so an accidentally hidden element does not disappear from the result.

Lock selected layers with Ctrl+/ or Cmd+/ to guard against accidental edits or movement. Locking is a practical safeguard, not a replacement for sensible organization or keeping an editable source file.

Use layer masks for reversible edits

A layer mask hides or reveals parts of a layer without deleting those pixels, so it is usually safer than erasing. Select a layer or group, then click the Layer Mask button or choose Layer > Layer Mask > Reveal Selection. With a selection active, hold Alt on Windows or Option on Mac while clicking the mask button to create a mask that hides the selected area.

  • Temporarily disable a mask: Hold Shift and click its thumbnail.
  • Invert a mask: Select the mask thumbnail and press Ctrl+I or Cmd+I.
  • Copy a mask: Alt/Option-drag its thumbnail to another layer to duplicate it; dragging without the modifier moves it.

Check that the border is around the mask thumbnail before painting or inverting. If it is around the layer thumbnail, your edits will target the layer content instead. Applying a mask makes the hidden portions permanent in the resulting pixel content; do not treat an applied mask as though the concealed pixels can necessarily be restored by deleting the mask. Adobe’s guides cover adding and editing masks and applying or deleting them.

Merge only when you mean to

Ctrl+E / Cmd+E merges selected layers. Shift+Ctrl+E / Shift+Cmd+E merges visible layers. These operations combine content and can remove the ability to edit the contributing layers separately, so they are poor default choices for a working file.

When you need a composite snapshot but want to keep the source layers, use Shift+Ctrl+Alt+E on Windows or Shift+Cmd+Option+E on Mac. Photoshop creates a stamped visible copy on a new layer above the existing stack. Use it for a finishing pass, such as sharpening the composite or applying a filter to a snapshot, while retaining the editable layers underneath. It preserves those layers but does not reduce the document’s complexity or guarantee better performance.

A practical layer workflow

  1. Select the intended layer in the panel, or use Move-tool Auto Select if the artwork is easy to target.
  2. Duplicate it with Ctrl/Cmd+J; if only part should be copied, make a selection first and confirm that is what you want.
  3. Move the copy through the stack with Ctrl/Cmd+[ and Ctrl/Cmd+]. These reorder the layer, not its canvas position.
  4. Select related layers and group them with Ctrl/Cmd+G.
  5. Place a texture above a shape or text layer, select the texture, and apply Alt/Option+Ctrl/Cmd+G to clip it.
  6. Alt/Option-click the texture’s eye to isolate it for inspection, then restore visibility.
  7. When you need a composite layer for finishing, stamp visible with Shift+Ctrl+Alt+E (Windows) or Shift+Cmd+Option+E (Mac) rather than flattening your working stack.

When a shortcut does not work

  1. Check the platform and edition. The table is for desktop Photoshop on Windows and macOS. Web, iPad, and Elements commands can differ.
  2. Check focus. Some commands need the document or Layers panel active. Click the relevant panel and try again.
  3. Check the target. A mask thumbnail, Smart Object, group, text layer, vector shape, or locked layer may respond differently from an ordinary pixel layer.
  4. Check for a selection. An active selection can make Ctrl/Cmd+J copy only selected pixels instead of the whole layer.
  5. Check the keyboard layout and conflicts. Non-US layouts, accessibility settings, browser shortcuts, graphics-tablet utilities, and screen-capture tools can intercept combinations.
  6. Use the menu as a fallback. The menu shows the command name and can make clear whether it is available for the current target.
  7. Verify or customize the shortcut in Photoshop’s keyboard-shortcut settings. Adobe’s current shortcut documentation can help, but installed versions and editions are not interchangeable.
  8. Reset preferences only as a last resort. First rule out focus, selection state, layer type, plug-ins, and conflicting utilities.

Shortcuts reduce interface friction; they do not guarantee faster rendering, filters, AI operations, or exports. If you use Photoshop regularly, the most useful first set to memorize is duplicate, navigate, reorder, group, clip, and stamp visible.
