The best paint for wood depends on three things: the wood’s condition, where it will be used, and the wear, moisture, and appearance you expect. Acrylic/latex and oil-based (usually alkyd) paints describe binder families; enamel describes a hard-finish product category that can use either chemistry. Chalk and milk paints are mainly decorative furniture choices. Always check the current product label for approved wood, interior or exterior use, primer, recoat time, cleanup, and compatible sealer.

The five main types of paint for wood

1. Acrylic or latex paint

Waterborne latex paints typically use acrylic or vinyl-acrylic polymers. Water evaporates and the polymer particles coalesce into a film. Acrylic-resin latex topcoats generally resist weathering and retain gloss better than oil-alkyd topcoats, according to the USDA Forest Service Wood Handbook.

Products vary widely: some acrylic latex coatings are rated for both interior and exterior work, while others are made specifically for trim, cabinets, or walls. Choose one whose label names your substrate and location. Water cleanup, lower odor than many solvent-borne products, and good flexibility make acrylic latex a practical choice for many wood projects.

2. Oil-based or alkyd paint

Modern architectural “oil paint” usually means a solvent-borne alkyd formulation rather than raw linseed-oil paint. Alkyd films can level smoothly and provide a durable finish, but they commonly have stronger odor, slower drying, and solvent-cleanup requirements than waterborne products.

Alkyd primer is particularly useful where wood extractives or end grain are concerns. The Forest Service notes that oil-alkyd primer has historically blocked extractives and end-grain water absorption better than latex primer, while being less permeable and less flexible. Current product performance varies, so follow the label for the wood species, ventilation, application temperature, and recoat interval.

3. Enamel

“Enamel” is a product or finish category, not one universal chemistry. A smooth, hard enamel may be waterborne urethane, urethane-alkyd, or another formulation. Manufacturers sell enamels for prepared wood, trim, doors, and cabinets in both waterborne and alkyd versions.

Compare the exact binder, approved substrate, sheen, cleanup, and cure instructions rather than assuming every enamel behaves like oil paint. Enamel is often appropriate when a wood surface needs a harder, washable finish, but hardness alone does not replace correct preparation or a compatible primer.

4. Chalk paint

Chalk paint is a decorative furniture coating. Annie Sloan describes its Chalk Paint as a water-based product developed for furniture that can be used on wood and generally needs little or no priming or sanding under that brand’s directions.

Those directions are not universal for every chalk-style product. The maker says wax can add sheen, protection, and durability; use only the sealer specified or approved for the paint, and expect a topcoat to affect the final look. Chalk paint is usually chosen for a matte, intentionally decorative appearance rather than maximum exterior weather resistance.

5. Milk paint

Traditional milk paint is commonly sold as a powder mixed with water. Old Fashioned Milk Paint describes its product for furniture and woodwork and says it adheres best to clean, porous surfaces such as bare wood. On nonporous or previously finished surfaces, its instructions recommend an adhesion additive.

Surfaces exposed to spills or washing should be sealed, and heavier-wear furniture may need a tougher compatible topcoat. “Milk paint” also appears on modern premixed products, so do not assume a premixed finish has the same ingredients or preparation requirements as traditional casein powder paint.

Quick comparison: which wood paint fits your project?

Enamel Hard, smooth finish/product category Washability and abrasion resistance when the formulation is designed for it Whether it is waterborne or alkyd, approved substrate, sheen and cure time
Chalk paint Decorative furniture coating Matte, distressed or otherwise decorative appearance; some brands minimize preparation Brand-specific adhesion, sanding, wax and topcoat directions

How to choose paint by wood condition

Bare, clean wood

Remove dust, grease and loose fibers, then assess porosity. Traditional milk paint is designed to grip clean porous bare wood. For other paints, use the primer specified for the topcoat and the wood species. Primer improves adhesion, evens color and helps prevent stains from migrating through the finish.

Rust-Oleum Painter's Touch Enamel Latex Paint, Semi-Gloss Black
  • Use for a variety of indoor and outdoor project surfaces including wood, metal, plaster, masonry or unglazed ceramic
  • Water-based acrylic formula is low odor, resist chips and provides long-lasting protection
  • Covers up to 30 sq ft and dries to touch in 30 minutes for quick project completion
  • Semi-gloss finish minimizes surface imperfections, goes on smoothly and provides excellent hide
  • Prior to application sand surfaces with 180/200 grit sandpaper, then wash with a degreaser, allow the surface to dry and apply paint

Previously painted, varnished or glossy wood

First determine whether the old coating is sound. Clean it, remove failing material, and dull glossy areas as the product instructions require. A bonding or adhesion primer may be necessary. Chalk-paint preparation claims are brand-specific, and milk paint may require an adhesion additive on nonporous surfaces.

Wood with knots or extractives

Redwood, western redcedar and some knotty woods can release extractives that discolor a light topcoat. Use a stain-blocking primer rated for that wood and finish. The Forest Service’s historical comparison found oil-alkyd primers blocked extractives better than latex primers at that time, but current formulas differ; rely on the present label.

Interior versus exterior wood

Exterior wood moves with moisture and temperature. The Forest Service explains that an exterior coating system needs suitable water-vapor permeability to reduce blistering and peeling, and cautions: “Paint is not a preservative.” Paint cannot prevent decay when conditions favor fungal growth.

Use a product explicitly rated for exterior wood, prepare the surface as directed, and address leaks, wet end grain, poor drainage or rotten wood before painting. Interior paint should likewise be labeled for the room and expected cleaning or humidity; an exterior rating does not automatically make a product suitable for interior use.

Choose for wear, appearance and maintenance

High-touch or frequently cleaned surfaces

For doors, trim, cabinets and furniture that will be handled or wiped often, compare abrasion resistance, washability and hardness. A suitable enamel may be preferable, but the binder and cure schedule matter more than the word “enamel.” Do not put heavy use on a coating merely because it is touch-dry; wait the label’s full cure period.

Matte and decorative finishes

Opaque paint hides much of the grain. Chalk and traditional milk paints are selected when a matte, layered, distressed or otherwise distinctive furniture look is the goal. Wax or another protective sealer can deepen sheen or change the color, so test compatibility and appearance on a small area first.

Odor and cleanup

Waterborne products generally clean up with water, while alkyd products normally require the solvent named on the label. Compare odor, ventilation, drying conditions and recoat time before beginning; a faster-feeling surface is not necessarily fully cured.

A practical selection checklist

  1. Identify the location: interior, covered exterior or fully exposed exterior.
  2. Inspect the wood: bare and porous, previously finished, glossy, contaminated, stained or deteriorated.
  3. Decide whether you need a flexible weathering film, stain blocking, a hard washable finish or a decorative furniture look.
  4. Choose a primer that names the substrate, problem and intended topcoat.
  5. Read the paint label for approved surfaces, application conditions, cleanup, recoat and full-cure times.
  6. Confirm that wax, varnish or other sealer is compatible if the project needs additional protection.
  7. Test the complete system on an inconspicuous area, especially when changing sheen, color or topcoat.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming “enamel” always means oil-based paint.
  • Using an interior product outdoors or treating an exterior rating as proof of indoor suitability.
  • Skipping primer over extractive-rich wood, stains or uncertain old finishes.
  • Applying traditional milk paint to a sealed surface without the maker’s adhesion guidance.
  • Generalizing one brand’s chalk-paint or milk-paint instructions to every product with that name.
  • Judging readiness by touch dryness instead of the specified cure time.
