For a classic tabletop Madame Leota, use a clear 3.25-inch ornament sphere, a multicolor LED tea light and a painted wood base. Disney’s official project adds frosted glass spray and a printed face insert to create the glowing séance-ball look. Prefer a simpler paper decoration or an animated room display? A printable model and a projector-based build offer two different routes.
Choose the Madame Leota effect you want
Madame Leota is the disembodied head in the Haunted Mansion séance scene. The recognizable image is Leota Toombs Thomas’s face inside a crystal ball. D23 recounts that Imagineer Yale Gracey asked her to pose as he experimented with ideas for a gypsy in a crystal ball; Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion opened in 1969. D23’s account of Madame Leota
| Build | Best for | Materials and effort | Display and power |
|---|---|---|---|
| Illuminated ornament | A recognizable tabletop crystal ball and the most accessible default | Craft materials and basic assembly; requires cutting, painting and drilling the base | Tabletop display; LED tea light |
| Printable séance circle | A low-material paper decoration | Printed sheets, scissors, glue and folding | Paper display; no powered lighting specified |
| Projected face | An animated room display with a stronger floating-head illusion | Mannequin-head shaping, projection alignment and more setup and testing | Room display; projector needs power |
The sources do not provide comparable prices or a measured portability rating for these builds. The paper version uses the fewest kinds of materials; the projector build needs the most space and power management.
Make the illuminated ornament version
Disney’s official project uses a small clear sphere and an LED tea light concealed in a decorated base. The frosted surface and printed insert soften the light around the face. See Disney’s Madame Leota crystal-ball instructions for the project sheet and visual reference.
#1 Best Overall
- 7.5" tall crystal ball decoration
- Glass ball features a unique cracked glass appearance with morphing color changing lights
- Ball is attached to stand. Uses 3 AAA batteries (included)
- Perfect for any Halloween scene or display
- Great for use as a theater prop
Gather the materials
- Clear 3.25-inch sphere ornament
- 2.5-inch multicolor LED tea light
- 4-inch round wood base
- Black acrylic paint, red felt and gold felt
- Black tape and painter’s tape
- Frosted glass spray paint
- Printed Madame Leota insert
- Hot-glue gun and glue sticks
- Craft knife or scissors
- Foam paint brush
- Needle and thread
- Power drill with a 3/4-inch spade bit
Assemble the crystal ball
- Prepare and frost the sphere. Follow the Disney project sheet to prepare the clear ornament and apply frosted glass spray paint. Work in a ventilated area and follow the spray product’s label for application and drying.
- Make the base and opening. Paint and prepare the 4-inch wood base, then use the 3/4-inch spade bit to make the opening specified by Disney. Secure the workpiece before drilling and use appropriate eye protection.
- Add the felt and painted details. Use the red and gold felt, black acrylic paint, tape and other listed materials to decorate the base according to the instruction sheet.
- Position the face and light. Place the printed Madame Leota insert and the multicolor LED tea light inside the ornament as shown in the project instructions. Check that the face is visible and the light is positioned before closing the assembly.
- Secure the sphere. Once the insert and light are aligned, secure the sphere to the prepared base as directed by Disney.
Keep the LED tea light accessible if you need to switch it on or replace its batteries. Avoid substituting an open flame: the build is designed around an LED light, and the ornament, felt and adhesives are not specified for candle heat.
Make the printable paper séance circle
For a decoration that avoids drilling and spray paint, Disney Parks’ Happy Haunts Paper Parks edition includes a printable Madame Leota séance-circle 3D model. It is assembled from printed sheets with scissors, glue and folds. Download the Happy Haunts Paper Parks model from Disney; the companion assembly image shows the paper table and crystal ball, including the tip glued together at the back.

- Gaze into this magic crystal ball and see the fame, fortune, or demise of your future
- Animated orb is a great costume accessory, stage prop, and fortune teller decor
- Magic ball lights up with vibrant LED lights and flashes various shades of blue and purple
- Add authenticity to your witch or wizard costume when you carry around this crystal ball during Halloween
- Haunted house prop measures approximately 6" in diameter and 7 1/2" tall
- Print the model at actual size, as Disney recommends.
- Cut out the printed pieces, then fold and glue them according to the template.
- Assemble the paper table and crystal ball; glue the crystal-ball tip together at the back.
Disney specifies personal, non-commercial use for the model. Because it is paper, treat it as a display decoration rather than a lighted prop.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Build an animated projected face
A documented independent build used a Styrofoam mannequin head, a small portable projector, a wig with neon-green extensions, an ornate candle holder and a 12-inch wooden plate. Its key adjustment was reshaping the head surface so the projected eyes and mouth aligned with the face. That alignment is what helps the projected features read as a face rather than a video falling across an object. See the documented projected Madame Leota build.

- ASK MR. PREDICTO ANYTHING, HE SPEAKS YOUR FUTURE - Wave your hand over this motion-activated fortune telling ball and hear 1 of 30 predictions out loud in a booming wizard voice. No tiny text to read, no app. Just ask and wave.
- HALLOWEEN GIFTS FOR KIDS AND TEENS - A fortune ball slightly larger than a tennis ball at 3.8 inches, for kids 8-12, teens and tweens past trick or treating. Ages 6 and up, boys and girls.
- FORTUNE TELLER COSTUME ACCESSORY AND HALLOWEEN DECOR - The prop that finishes the costume. A working crystal ball for a fortune teller costume, a seance table centerpiece, or spooky decor on a shelf.
- HALLOWEEN PARTY GAME AND PARTY PRIZE - Set it on the table and it runs itself. Three volume levels take it from a loud room to a quiet sleepover. Halloween games for kids and teens, class parties, game nights.
- LIGHTS UP, TALKS, READY OUT OF THE BOX - Every answer sets off a red, blue, green and purple light show with eerie sound. Glossy plastic shell under 4 ounces, light enough to pass around. Three replaceable AG13 LR44 batteries pre-installed, on off switch and volume button on the base.
Plan for alignment and setup
- Set the mannequin head where it will be displayed and test the projector position before finishing the stand or styling the wig.
- Adjust the face surface and projection until the eyes and mouth land in the right places.
- Plan a stable arrangement for the projector, mannequin head and decorative stand, with power access that will not create a trip hazard.
- Allow time for testing in the actual room: unlike the self-contained ornament, this effect depends on projector placement, ambient light and the viewing angle.
This is the most complex option. It requires more room, power management and setup testing than the static LED ornament, and the documented build does not establish a standard projector specification or a guaranteed result for other equipment.
