Out-of-bounds (OOB) photos make part of an image appear to escape its own picture boundary, often through a 3D-perspective illusion. SmashingApps presents 50 examples of the effect, ranging from a train to portraits and motorcycles. Browse them as visual inspiration, paying attention to how the subject, pose and frame work together to make the boundary-crossing idea readable.
What makes a photo “out of bounds”?
In an out-of-bounds image, a subject appears to cross the edge of the picture rather than remain contained within it. The frame becomes part of the illusion: a hand, object or other element seems to project into the space beyond the image. SmashingApps describes the effect as photo content taken outside its boundaries and presented in 3D perspective. The gallery’s introduction and captions use “Out of bounds photos (OOB)” for this idea.
The effect is best understood as a visual conceit, not a claim that a flat photograph literally has depth. The apparent escape from the frame is what gives the image its playful, dimensional quality.

- How far does the subject cross the edge? A small extension can suggest depth subtly; a more pronounced crossing makes the effect immediately conspicuous.
- What role does the frame play? Notice whether the boundary is visible or implied, and how it helps distinguish the picture area from the space around it.
- Does the pose or scene make the illusion legible? Look for a clear relationship between the subject and the edge it appears to cross.
What the gallery does—and does not—establish
