In Clip Studio Paint, the quickest way to make a brush for a particular mark is to duplicate a similar existing brush, adjust its settings, test it on the canvas, and save the result as the new default. You can also build a brush from a registered image tip or start with a basic round custom tool.
Duplicate a brush and customize it
Starting with a brush that already behaves close to what you want preserves a useful baseline. The Clip Studio Paint Ver. 5.0 User Guide describes duplication as the easier route in most cases. CELSYS: Adding new brushes

- Choose a starting brush. In the Sub Tool palette, select a brush with a similar mark or stroke behavior to your goal.
- Make a copy. Open the Tool Group palette menu and choose Duplicate tool. Name the copy so you can distinguish it from the original.
- Open its settings. Select Advanced Tool Settings, then adjust the relevant groups. The manual’s examples include Brush tip, Brush stroke spacing, and Color Jitter; the available controls depend on the selected tool.
- Test as you adjust. Draw on the canvas while the settings palette is open. Change one feature at a time and inspect the stroke at the size you intend to use.
- Keep the finished settings. When the brush behaves as you want, choose Save all settings as default.
As an alternative, choose Tool Group palette menu > Create custom tool to make a basic round brush, then edit it. Choose this route when you want a clean round-brush starting point rather than the behavior of an existing tool. CELSYS: Adding new brushes
Choose a tip and tune the stroke
The right settings depend on the mark you want; there is no universal recipe. Brush shape settings include circle and material tips, and some brushes can use more than one tip shape. Relevant settings may include tip angle, thickness, density, and dynamics tied to pressure or stroke speed. Treat these as options to test, not as required adjustments. - Circle tip: Use it for a simple round brush shape.
- Material tip: Use it for a registered image shape, such as a stamp or textured mark.
- Multiple tips: If the selected brush supports them, add and reorder tip shapes, then compare the resulting stroke on the canvas.
- Spacing: Adjust the spacing in Brush stroke and inspect whether the marks look continuous or separated. The manual does not prescribe one ideal value.
- Dynamics: Where available, pressure or speed responses can affect properties such as size, thickness, angle, or density. Adjust them only if you want the brush to respond in that way.
Make an image into a brush tip
Registering an image as a brush tip is a separate process from registering the finished brush tool. First, prepare and register the image material; then select it as the brush tip in the tool’s settings.
- Create the tip artwork on a raster layer. Select the portion you want to use; without a selection, Clip Studio Paint uses the entire layer.
- Choose Edit > Register Material > Image, or use the Material palette’s command to register an image as material.
- In Material Properties, set the material for brush use and choose the brush-tip shape, then register it.
- Open the brush’s Advanced Tool Settings. Under Brush tip, set Tip shape to Material and add the registered image material.
- Draw a test stroke. If the brush supports multiple tip shapes, compare the result with different combinations or ordering.

Save the brush for reuse or sharing
After finalizing the brush settings, use Save all settings as default to retain the customized behavior. To store the custom tool as a reusable material, open the Tool Group palette menu or tool context menu and choose Register tool as material. The registered tool is then available in the Material palette for later use or sharing. CELSYS: Adding new brushes

Clip Studio Paint’s documented import options include native tool files and Photoshop brushes. Availability depends on file type, operating system, and edition.

The file behavior and platform or edition exceptions are documented in CELSYS’s brush import instructions. Clip Studio Paint’s brush guide also notes that native brushes use .sut and that imported .abr brushes can appear differently from their source.
Find brushes to adapt
If you would rather adapt a ready-made digital brush, Clip Studio ASSETS offers free and paid brush downloads, according to the publisher’s brush guide. These are software assets, not physical products.
