These 53 DIY bird bath ideas range from a simple plant saucer on the ground to a small drip-fed feature. Whichever style you choose, start with a stable, easy-to-clean basin and keep the water shallow: the National Audubon Society recommends a pan or tray no more than 2 inches deep, filled to about 1 to 1½ inches. Add a few large pebbles or a flat stone as visible footholds, then place the bath where birds have nearby shelter and a clear way to escape.
Simple saucer and tray bird baths
A shallow saucer or tray is a straightforward starting point: it is easy to lift out, refill, and scrub. Audubon’s DIY guide describes using a pan or flower-pot tray, while ABC Gardening Australia also offers a simple bird bath build using a plant saucer. Keep the vessel level and the water depth controlled.

Choose the site before the style
Use a level spot near shrubs or evergreens, but leave birds a clear escape route. Consider an elevated location if free-ranging cats make a ground-level bath risky. A bath that is visible from a window can also be easier to observe.
Make routine cleaning part of the design
Prefer a basin that lifts out or can be emptied without dismantling the support. Change scummy water and scrub visible algae or bacterial mats. A fountain or drip does not remove the need for that regular care.

Be cautious with materials and elaborate builds
The cited guidance supports straightforward vessels such as pans, trays, saucers, and basins, along with stones and simple fountain concepts. It does not establish that every paint, sealant, adhesive, salvaged item, finish, or support structure is suitable. A removable, uncomplicated basin makes it easier to focus on shallow water, stability, and cleaning.
