You can make a Japanese-inspired garden lantern by casting six concrete sections in plywood and foam molds, then stacking and securing them. The documented design is a practical home project, not a replica of a particular historic lantern. If you want traditionally carved stone instead, that is a specialist craft with different materials and skills.
Choose the right kind of garden lantern
Tōrō is a broad category, not one fixed design or material. The North American Japanese Garden Association describes lanterns made from stone, cast iron, wood, ceramic, or clay, with religious, practical, and garden uses. A typical stone lantern has six named parts: base (kiso), shaft (sao), platform (chūdai), lamp housing (hibukuro), roof (kasa), and jewel finial (hōshu), according to the Nara National Research Institute for Cultural Properties. Its history in gardens is later than its use as a votive lamp: the institute notes that stone lanterns became important garden elements after tea-garden style developed in the Momoyama period.
Cast concrete: a manageable DIY route
Make: project author Jim Becker describes a six-part concrete design made in plywood forms. He calls it his own design, representative of traditional garden lanterns but not based on any particular historical build. This is the best-supported home-building approach here; use the term Japanese-inspired or tōrō-inspired rather than presenting it as a traditional stone lantern.

Carved stone: a different undertaking
Traditional Izumo lanterns are carved from Kimachi stone, a locally occurring tuffaceous sandstone. Traditional Crafts Aoyama Square describes chisel carving and mortise-and-tenon joints for most components; JTCO, crediting the Kimachi Stone Cooperative Association, notes that the stone is workable and readily takes moss. These sources describe specialist craft, not a beginner stone-carving plan.
Materials and tools for the concrete project
Becker’s Make: project uses concrete cast in forms made mainly from 5/8-inch plywood. The molds are joined with screws or brackets; a smaller inner box and removable foam blocks create the window openings. The article includes full-size diagrams, so use those drawings for the form dimensions rather than estimating them from a text description.

Concrete handling, lifting, and curing depend on the specific product and conditions. Follow the concrete mix instructions and the project’s diagrams and directions; do not treat a timing or material choice from one build as a universal specification.
How to make and assemble the lantern
- Choose the design and dimensions. Use the full-size diagrams in the Make: Japanese garden lantern project to size the base, column, pedestal top, window box, canopy, and cap.
- Build the molds. Assemble the plywood forms with screws or brackets. Fit the smaller inner box and foam blocks where needed to leave the window openings. Plan how each form will come apart after the concrete sets.
- Cast the six sections. Mix and place concrete according to the product directions and project instructions. Allow each piece to set as directed before removing its form; the suitable timing depends on the concrete and conditions.
- Prepare a stable base. Set the base on solid ground and check it with a level. Becker describes using small rocks or gravel to make adjustments before stacking the other sections.
- Stack and secure the components. Assemble the column, pedestal top, window box, canopy, and cap in order. Arrange help to lift and place the column: the project author specifically says a helper is needed. Becker used adhesive between sections; follow the selected adhesive’s instructions for use and cure time.
- Add the optional frames and light. Wooden window frames and a candle or LEDs are options in the project. Keep the light source appropriate to the lantern’s construction and intended location.
Becker reports waiting 24 hours for the column-to-base joint and two hours after placing the next pedestal before proceeding, using the adhesive in his project. Those are his project timings, not general cure times for every adhesive or installation.

Choose a light without assuming the wiring is solved
A candle or LEDs can be used without making the lantern a permanently wired fixture. Becker suggests running a pipe at least 1/2 inch in diameter through the column and pedestal as a conduit for permanent wiring. That is a project suggestion, not electrical-code guidance: the project source does not establish what outdoor wiring method is permitted at your location. Check applicable local requirements and use a qualified electrician where needed.
Set a stone lantern securely
If you are installing a ready-made stone lantern, use instructions for its particular model and foundation. Kosaka Shoten’s guide illustrates one buried-shaft Oribe-style lantern. It shows the shaft set upright, the platform checked front-to-back and side-to-side, soil firmed around the shaft, and the housing, roof, and finial aligned in sequence. The supplier calls for a shovel, level, and protective clothing and warns that the object is heavy.

For the lantern pictured in that guide only, Kosaka Shoten gives a hole depth of roughly 30 cm and an estimated installation time of 1–2 hours. The supplier explicitly cautions that dimensions and weight vary, so those figures are not general instructions. Confirm the requirements for the actual lantern before digging or lifting; do not assume a buried-shaft example applies to a concrete build or another stone-lantern style.

Choose concrete if you want to make the object with forms and casting rather than carve stone. Choose a carved lantern if the material and specialist finish are central to what you want; plan placement around the specific lantern’s weight, shaft, and foundation rather than a generic diagram.
