JOANN’s stores closed during its 2025 wind-down. Michaels bought JOANN’s intellectual property and private-label brands, but not the former stores or operating company. If you need fabric now, these six sources cover chain shopping, specialist advice, online selection, reclaimed textiles and secondhand finds.

1. Michaels—especially its online catalog and fabric-stocked branches
Michaels is the most direct replacement for a national craft-store search, but it is not a reopening of JOANN. Its catalog includes quilt fabric, cotton and cotton blends, apparel and costume fabric, home décor fabric, fleece, flannel, utility fabric, nursery and licensed prints, pre-cut fabric and quilting kits. The company says it is adding fabric to more stores, so a nearby Michaels may not yet carry the material shown online.

Use the Michaels fabric-store locator, then call the branch to confirm the fiber, width, print and quantity you need. For online orders, check the product’s fiber content, width, cut length and seller details before checkout. “Cotton fabric by the yard for sewing” is a useful search starting point, but verify the specification on each listing.
2. Hobby Lobby’s Fabric & Sewing Department
Hobby Lobby maintains a dedicated Fabric & Sewing Department with fabric and related notions. It can be convenient for straightforward garment, craft, quilting or home projects when a branch is nearby.
The department page does not establish that every store carries the same selection. Search the exact material—such as quilting cotton, fleece or apparel fabric—then check local availability before traveling. If the project depends on a continuous cut, ask the store to confirm the remaining yardage rather than assuming the online quantity applies to your branch.

3. Independent quilt shops and local fabric stores
A specialist shop is often the better choice when the project has strict requirements. Local quilt stores tend to focus on quilting cotton and can help with color coordination, scale, backing and pattern compatibility. Other independent fabric stores may specialize in apparel, upholstery, theatrical or home décor textiles.
Shopping in person lets you assess drape, weight, weave and true color—details that product photos cannot reliably show. Bring the pattern, required fiber content and yardage list. Emma Seymour, associate director of Good Housekeeping’s Textiles, Paper & Apparel Lab, advises choosing a store that specializes in what you are buying, “especially important for quilting fabrics.” Search locally for “independent quilt shop” or “fabric store,” then confirm current hours and services.
4. Specialty online fabric retailers
Online specialists broaden the search beyond chain-store basics. Examples named by Good Housekeeping include Mood Fabrics, Gray Lines Linen, Stone Mountain Fabric, B&J Fabrics, Fabric Mart, Britex Fabrics and Brooklyn General Store.

Mood has locations in New York City, Los Angeles and Miami as well as an online selection. Gray Lines Linen offers swatches, which can reduce the risk of ordering the wrong shade or hand. The other retailers differ in their emphasis and availability, so compare fiber, width, price, minimum cut, shipping time and return rules for the specific listing.
Order a swatch when color, transparency or texture matters. If a swatch is unavailable, request the seller’s measured width and fiber information and allow for dye-lot differences when combining separate orders.
5. FABSCRAP for reclaimed material
FABSCRAP is a nonprofit that recycles and reuses textile waste, selling reclaimed materials online and at its Brooklyn warehouse. It is useful when sustainability, experimentation or an unusual remnant matters more than finding a pristine, continuously cut bolt.

Reclaimed stock can be ideal for samples, appliqué, small accessories, art projects and limited-run garments. Confirm the current listing, usable dimensions and any visible wear. For a large pattern, calculate the pieces before buying: a remnant may have enough total area but not enough uninterrupted length for the largest pattern piece.

Secondhand sellers can uncover discontinued prints, vintage yardage and inexpensive practice fabric. A Thrifty Notion, for example, sells secondhand fabric from an Ogden, Kansas warehouse and online. Local thrift stores, estate sales, sewing-group swaps and resale marketplaces are additional places to look.
Treat secondhand fabric as a discovery source rather than a dependable replacement for a precise bolt. Inspect for stains, odors, mildew, fading, pinholes, storage damage and uneven cutting. Measure the usable area and confirm that the fabric is clean before it enters your sewing room. If you need fabric for a matched set or a pattern requiring exact yardage, buy only after verifying the quantity and condition.

How to choose the right source for your project
For quilting
Start with an independent quilt shop or a fabric-stocked Michaels branch. Prioritize quilting-weight cotton, coordinated collections and enough yardage from one dye lot. A specialist can help check that the fabric works with the pattern and the rest of the quilt.
For apparel
Use a specialty online retailer or an independent apparel-fabric store when drape, stretch, lining or fiber content is critical. Order swatches where possible and compare the fabric’s width with the pattern’s cutting layout.

Michaels and Hobby Lobby may cover common fleece, flannel, costume and utility needs. For one-off experiments, FABSCRAP or secondhand remnants can lower cost and provide unusual textures.
For upholstery and home décor
Look for décor or upholstery-specific fabric and verify abrasion, weight and width. A local specialist can let you evaluate the hand and color in person; online listings should state the complete fiber and measurement details.
