The best scissors for cutting paper depend on the cut. For everyday sheets and long, smooth lines, choose purpose-built paper scissors with long stainless-steel blades and a handle that matches your dominant hand. For intricate shapes, a short straight blade gives better control; for cardstock, chipboard, or other mixed media, use scissors designed for thicker materials. The products below are manufacturer-described options, not a independently tested ranking.
What are the best scissors for everyday paper use?
Start with a dedicated pair of paper scissors rather than a general household or fabric model. Fiskars’ 2026 catalogue defines paper scissors as lightweight, compact scissors with long stainless-steel blades for cutting paper. A longer blade can cover more distance per closing motion, which is useful when you are trimming sheets, making posters, or cutting straight lines by hand.

For occasional straight cuts, standard paper scissors are usually sufficient. If you repeatedly need perfectly straight, repeatable edges, a paper trimmer is an adjacent category worth considering; the available manufacturer material establishes the category but does not validate a particular current model.
How to choose scissors for your paper project
Match blade length to the cut
- Long blades: Better suited to long, smooth cuts across a sheet. Fiskars describes its 17 cm Classic Paper Scissors as intended for this use.
- Short blades: Easier to steer around tight corners, curves, and small openings.
- Straight blades: A useful choice for detailed paper craft and cutting out. KOKUYO specifically describes its straight-blade SAXA scissors for detailed paper work.
Choose the correct hand orientation
Check whether the scissors are right-handed, left-handed, or designed for either hand. DAHLE lists its 21 cm Home paper scissors as separate right-handed model 54608 and left-handed model 54618. Fiskars describes the Classic Paper Scissors, 17 cm (article 1005150), as having a handle shaped for both right- and left-handed users. A handle that suits your hand helps you see the cut line and reduces awkward wrist rotation.

Prioritize handle fit for repeated cutting
Hold the closed scissors before buying when possible. Your thumb should move freely in the upper ring, your fingers should not be squeezed into the lower ring, and the pivot should open and close without forcing your wrist sideways. For long sessions, comfort and control matter as much as nominal blade length.
Check the intended materials
Plain printer paper, poster paper, cardstock, and chipboard do not place the same demands on a blade. Fiskars distinguishes detail scissors for intricate cuts from mixed-media scissors intended for paper, cardstock, chipboard, and other thicker materials. Using a pair designed for the material can make the job easier than forcing lightweight paper scissors through heavy stock.

Best choice by cutting task
Trimming letters, worksheets, and single sheets
Choose a general paper-scissor design with a comfortable handle and a blade long enough to cross the sheet in controlled strokes. A 17 cm or 21 cm paper-scissor format is a reasonable starting point, subject to your hand size and storage needs.

- Fiskars Scissors help to elevate your creativity by providing unique design and blade coating for intricate cuts on sticky materials
- Micro-Tip blades provide superior accuracy
- Non-stick blade coating makes clean cuts through sticky materials that tend to gum up like tape, vinyl, stickers and glue
- High-grade stainless steel blades are precision-ground to cut all the way to the tip
- Double-loop SoftGrip handle provides excellent comfort and control for right- and left-handed users
Cutting long straight poster edges
Favor long, slender blades such as those described for the Fiskars Classic Paper Scissors. Keep the paper flat, mark the line lightly, and make steady cuts rather than repeatedly nibbling at the edge.

Use a short, straight-blade detail option. The KOKUYO SAXA HSM-110D is a named example with a listed 65 mm blade. Turn the paper as you cut so your wrist and the scissors remain in a comfortable position.

Cutting cardstock and chipboard
Select mixed-media scissors when thicker stock is part of the project. Fiskars’ selection guidance explicitly includes cardstock and chipboard in this category. Do not assume that a lightweight paper pair has the same intended range.
Cutting many identical straight strips
Consider a paper trimmer instead of hand scissors when repeatability and speed are more important than portability. A trimmer is an alternative category, not a specific model recommendation here.

How to get cleaner cuts
- Mark the line: Use a ruler and a light pencil mark on the reverse side when accuracy matters.
- Support the sheet: Keep the paper on a flat surface and let the waste side move freely.
- Use full blade strokes: For a straight edge, place the paper deeper into the blades and close smoothly instead of making many tiny bites.
- Rotate the paper: For curves and corners, turn the sheet rather than twisting your wrist.
- Keep the blades clean: Remove paper dust and adhesive residue with a dry, soft cloth; avoid cutting materials outside the scissors’ intended range.
What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you
Manufacturer descriptions establish intended categories and features: Fiskars identifies long stainless-steel paper blades, its 17 cm Classic model, detail scissors, and mixed-media scissors; DAHLE separates right- and left-handed 21 cm models; and KOKUYO positions a straight-blade SAXA model for detailed paper work. They do not establish a universal best pair, comparative sharpness, durability rankings, or independently measured cut quality.
Fiskars also states that more than 1 billion scissors have been sold since 1967. That is a company claim about its Classic Scissors design, not an independently audited market statistic, so it should not be used as proof that the model cuts paper better than every alternative.
Quick Recap
Quick buying checklist
- Is the main job long straight cutting, detail work, or thick mixed media?
- Is the blade length appropriate for the size of the cuts?
- Does the handle fit your right or left hand?
- Are the scissors explicitly intended for paper, cardstock, or chipboard?
- Will a paper trimmer be more consistent for repeated straight cuts?
- Are you judging a manufacturer description rather than an independent test?
