How to install and refresh brushes
- Find the brush files. If the download is an archive, extract it and check its included instructions and license.
- Locate a configured brush folder. GIMP searches configured brush folders. Use the brush-folder settings for your installation rather than assuming one path applies to every operating system and version.
- Copy the files into a scanned folder. The GIMP User Manual says that GBR, GIH, or VBR files included in a folder in the brush search path appear in the Brushes dialog after startup or when you press Refresh.
- Refresh the Brushes dialog. Open the dialog and use its Refresh control. Restart GIMP if needed.
- Test the brush. Select it and try a stroke to check that it loads and behaves as expected.
For a version-specific example, the GIMP 3.2 man page names $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/GIMP/3.2/brushes as the user brush directory. Folder paths differ across releases and platforms, so check the configured folders in your own installation.
