Start in the same photo app that made the edit: its Revert or Revert to Original command can restore the photo if that app retained an original or reversible edit history. If the only remaining file is an overwritten, flattened image and there is no other copy or backup, exact restoration cannot be promised.
Before reverting, make a separate copy if you might want to keep the edited version. The steps and availability vary by app, device, and software version.

Quick comparison
| App | Where to find Revert | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Photos on iPhone | Open the photo, tap More, then Revert to Original. | iCloud Photos syncs edits across your devices, so a revert may affect the synced library. |
| Google Photos on Android | Open the image, tap Edit, Revert, then Save. | It cannot reconstruct a source file that is already incorrect in the device’s Files app. |
| Samsung Gallery | Open the image, tap Edit, Revert, then Revert to original and Save. | Available only on selected models and software versions. |
Before you revert
- Identify the app that actually saved the edit. Another app may see only a rendered copy.
- Make a copy first if you may want to keep the current edit.
- Check that you have the right photo. If it syncs, compare the image and filename in the app and its web library before replacing or uploading anything.
- Look for an untouched duplicate or backup before repeatedly saving over the only file.
Undo and Revert are different: Undo steps back through actions in an open editing session, while Revert returns a saved image to a retained original or edit state. Neither can restore pixels that were overwritten if no original, history, or backup remains.
Revert a photo in Apple Photos on iPhone
- Open Photos and select the edited image.
- Tap More.
- Tap Revert to Original.
- Confirm if prompted.
While the editing session is still open, use Undo or Redo to move through recent changes. Apple says iCloud Photos syncs edits across the user’s devices, so reverting a synced library photo may affect how it appears on those devices. Make a separate copy first if you want to preserve the edited appearance.

Revert a photo in Google Photos
- Open Google Photos and select the edited image.
- Tap Edit, then Revert.
- Tap Save.
Google describes Google Photos editing as non-destructive. Where available, choose Save as copy when editing if you want to retain the original alongside the edited copy. Google notes that web and app editing controls may differ.
Revert a photo in Samsung Gallery
- Open the image in Gallery and tap Edit.
- Tap Revert, then Revert to original.
- Tap Save.
Samsung documents this feature for selected models and software versions, so the command may not appear on every device. Use Save as copy when available if you want to keep both versions.

If Revert is missing or the photo looks wrong
- Confirm which app made the edit and open the photo there.
- Check the same image in the device’s Files app and the photo service’s web library, if it syncs. For Google Photos, compare the filename on the device and at photos.google.com.
- Look for an unedited duplicate, device backup, cloud backup, or another copy shared before the edit.
- If the file itself displays incorrectly in Files as well as Google Photos, Google says Photos cannot recover the original file.
A missing Revert command may mean the photo was edited elsewhere, the edits were already reverted, or the app does not have a reversible original for that image. Do not replace the only copy until you have checked for another source.
If the original photo was deleted
Deleting a photo is different from reverting an edit. Check the service’s Trash or Recently Deleted area and any backups promptly. Google Photos says items stay in Trash for 30 days before permanent deletion; permanently deleted items cannot be restored from Trash. Source: Google Photos Help, current policy page accessed 2026.

FAQ
How do I undo edits after saving a photo?
Open the photo in the app that made the edit and look for Revert or Revert to Original. The option works only if that app retained a reversible original or edit history.
Why is there no Revert button?
You may be viewing a copy edited in another app, a photo whose edits were already reverted, or a file with no retained original. Check the original editing app and look for another copy or backup.

Can Google Photos restore an incorrect file from my device?
Google says Google Photos cannot recover the original file if the photo also displays incorrectly in the device’s Files app. Look for a separate original or backup instead.
Can I restore a permanently deleted Google Photos item?
Google says items in Trash are permanently deleted after 30 days and permanently deleted items cannot be restored from Trash. Check for another copy or backup.
Does Samsung Gallery have Revert on every Galaxy device?
No. Samsung documents the feature on selected models and software versions, so its availability can vary.
The bottom line
Use the app that performed the edit: Apple Photos offers More > Revert to Original, Google Photos offers Edit > Revert > Save, and Samsung Gallery offers Edit > Revert > Revert to original > Save on selected devices. If the command is missing, check for the original in the right app, a synced library, another copy, or a backup; a flattened, overwritten file alone may not contain enough information to restore the exact original.
