You do not need a costume-store run to get dressed for Halloween. These seven no-sew-first costumes use ordinary clothing, sheets, paper, cardboard, clean packaging, markers, tape, and accessories you may already have. Most take about 5 to 30 minutes to assemble once the materials are gathered.
The times below are editorial planning estimates, not measured test results. They assume the supplies are already available and the costume does not need extensive fitting or drying time. Before leaving home, test whether the wearer can see, breathe, sit, walk, turn, climb steps, and use both hands comfortably. A recognizable costume is not useful if it creates a trip, visibility, or fire hazard.

What you need
- An old white sheet, tablecloth, oversized white T-shirt, hoodie, or white clothes
- Scissors and a marker
- Optional black paper, tape, a hat, sunglasses, or white shoes
A sheet is the instantly recognizable version, but it is not the only option. An oversized white shirt, hoodie, fleece, or an all-white outfit can create the same idea with better mobility. Country Living also lists a sheet, tablecloth, oversized T-shirt, and white fleece as possible ghost foundations.
How to make it
- Put the base garment on over the clothes the wearer will actually use. If using a sheet, position it while the wearer is standing in the shoes they will wear.
- In a mirror, mark the eye position or, preferably, one large face opening. The opening should allow clear vision rather than creating two small, difficult-to-see holes.
- Remove the sheet before cutting. Make the opening and try it again.
- Walk, turn, sit, use stairs, and look down. Trim the bottom so it cannot catch under shoes.
- Add black paper eyes to the chest, a hat, sunglasses, or a hand-lettered BOO sign if the plain silhouette needs more personality.
No-buy substitutions and fixes
- No sheet? Wear white clothes and add black paper eyes to a shirt or hoodie.
- The sheet keeps slipping? Turn it into a poncho by cutting armholes and securing it at the shoulders. Do not pin fabric where a pin could contact the wearer.
- It is cold? Use a white sweatshirt and white pants over warm layers.
- Visibility is poor? Abandon the head-covering version. Use white clothes with makeup or a chest graphic instead.
Safety note: A sheet over the head is fastest but has the greatest visibility and tripping risk. For a young child, toddler, trick-or-treater, or anyone walking after dark, use white clothing rather than a head-covering sheet. Avoid floor-length hems, masks that impair vision, and fabric that covers the mouth or nose.
2. Black cat
Target build time: 5–10 minutes
Craft level: Low
Best for: Work, school, parties, and anyone who wants a costume that is easy to sit and move in
What you need
- A black shirt and pants, dress, leggings, or pajamas
- Eyeliner or face paint specifically intended for skin
- Paper, cardstock, felt, or a small piece of clean cardboard
- A headband, hair clips, or tape
- Optional black sock, tights, yarn, or belt for a tail
How to make it
- Cut two triangles from paper, cardstock, felt, or cardboard.
- Fold or tape the bottom edge of each triangle and attach them to a headband or hair clips. If there is no headband, attach the ears to a hat.
- Use skin-safe eyeliner to add a small nose, whiskers, and optional winged eyeliner.
- Add a black sock or section of tights as a tail only if it will not catch on furniture, doors, wheels, or other people.
- Finish with black shoes and a catwalk, a few exaggerated stretches, or a paper tag reading Copy Cat.
If you are missing the obvious item
- No black clothes? Wear any solid-color outfit and turn the idea into a copycat costume with paper ears, whiskers, and a sign that says COPY CAT.
- No makeup? Skip it. Ears and a tail are enough, or use a paper face sign. Do not use craft paint, marker ink, or other products on skin unless they are labeled for that cosmetic use.
- No headband? Tape the ears to a hat or attach them to hair clips.
Makeup safety: The FDA advises using novelty makeup intended for the skin, following the product label, and keeping products away from the eyes unless they are specifically intended for that area. Its cosmetics safety guidance also recommends testing unfamiliar makeup before applying it broadly. Avoid makeup altogether if the wearer has a known sensitivity or does not want anything on the face.
3. Tourist
Target build time: About 5 minutes
Craft level: None
Best for: The fastest adult costume, commuting, work parties, and weather that makes fabric costumes inconvenient
What you need
- A bright or patterned shirt
- Shorts, jeans, or comfortable pants
- Sunglasses and a hat or visor
- Socks and sandals, sneakers, or conspicuously practical shoes
- A map, guidebook, phone, old camera, fanny pack, or tote bag
- Optional handwritten I love [city] sign or name tag
This costume works because the individual items form a familiar visual combination. Martha Stewart’s tourist-costume examples include a brightly patterned shirt, hat, cargo shorts, fanny pack, sunglasses, camera, and map. You can recreate the visual formula without buying a matching outfit.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How to make it
- Put on the loudest vacation-looking shirt available.
- Add sunglasses, a hat, and a crossbody bag or fanny pack.
- Carry a folded paper map, guidebook, phone showing a map, or old camera.
- Add a paper name tag such as First Time Here or Ask Me for Directions.
- Use an exaggeratedly enthusiastic pose or ask everyone where the nearest landmark is.
Make it work anywhere: For an office or school, replace sandals and a bulky camera with a coat, tote bag, map, and badge. For cold weather, wear the map or tourist badge over a jacket and keep the sunglasses as the visual cue. For rain, put the identifying message on a plastic-covered badge rather than carrying loose paper.
The tourist is the best choice when you have no time to cut, tape, paint, or assemble anything. It also leaves the wearer’s face, hands, and peripheral vision unobstructed.

4. Scarecrow
Target build time: 10–15 minutes
Craft level: Low
Best for: Fall clothing, cool weather, children or adults who want a comfortable costume
What you need
- A flannel shirt
- Jeans, overalls, a denim skirt, or work pants
- A hat, beanie, or baseball cap
- Scrap fabric or paper for patches
- Tape, fabric adhesive, or safety pins used only on the outer layer
- Yarn, raffia, or paper strips
- Optional skin-safe face makeup
Flannel, denim or overalls, patches, and a hat make the costume readable before any face detail is added. The same basic combination appears in Country Living’s scarecrow costume ideas and Good Housekeeping’s scarecrow coverage.
How to make it
- Put on the flannel and denim or overalls.
- Cut uneven squares from scrap fabric or paper.
- Attach patches to the shirt, knees, or pockets. If using safety pins, place them through the outer layer while the garment is off the body.
- Tuck short pieces of yarn, raffia, or paper into cuffs, pockets, and the hat.
- Add a small drawn-on stitched smile or cheek marks only with makeup labeled for skin use.
- Finish with boots or sturdy sneakers.
Prefer short, secure decoration: Yarn, paper strips, or a few short pieces of raffia are easier to control than loose straw. The NFPA warns that dried flowers, cornstalks, and crepe paper catch fire easily. Keep all decorative material away from candles, heaters, fireplaces, light bulbs that become hot, and other ignition sources. A scarecrow should not shed long pieces while walking.
For a child, keep the patches soft and the hat secure. For outdoor use, choose sturdy footwear and use short decorations that cannot become tangled in bicycle wheels, doors, or mobility equipment.
5. Mummy
Target build time: 15–20 minutes
Craft level: Low
Best for: A dramatic indoor costume for a teen or adult who can move carefully
What you need
- Dark, close-fitting base clothes
- An old white sheet, pillowcase, worn T-shirt, or fabric scraps
- Scissors
- Fabric tape, masking tape, or safety pins used only on the outside layer
- Optional gray or brown makeup intended for skin
How to make it
- Cut the white fabric into strips of varying widths.
- Tear or notch the edges for an aged appearance.
- Put on the dark base clothes before adding any strips.
- Anchor a few strips at the shoulders, waist, and legs instead of wrapping the entire body tightly.
- Leave the face, neck, hands, and feet uncovered.
- Walk, sit, bend, raise both arms, and use the bathroom before leaving the house. Re-secure or trim any strip that pulls or trails.
- Add a small amount of gray makeup only if the product is safe for the wearer and has been tested ahead of time.
What not to do
Do not cover the eyes or mouth, bind the neck, wrap tightly around the chest, or create strips that trail near the feet. Toilet paper is a familiar last-minute suggestion, but it tears and sheds easily and performs poorly in rain. Fabric strips are the more durable household option.

6. Mad scientist
Target build time: 5–10 minutes
Craft level: Low
Best for: Work, school, classroom events, and anyone who wants a costume with no mask or complicated clothing

What you need
- A white button-down shirt, lab coat, apron, robe, or light-colored cardigan
- Glasses or sunglasses
- A notebook, clipboard, pen, or calculator
- Clean, empty jars, containers, or food packaging
- Paper and a marker
- Optional rubber gloves, hair product, bow tie, bowler hat, or tie
How to make it
- Wear the white outer layer over ordinary clothes.
- Write labels such as SPECIMEN, TOP SECRET, or DO NOT DRINK on paper.
- Tape the labels to clean, empty containers or a clipboard.
- Add glasses and deliberately messy hair.
- Carry the clipboard and use exaggerated scientific jargon to make the character clear.
- For a child, use paper props rather than glass containers.
Use visual props, not real substances: Do not put bleach, cleaning products, medications, dry ice, or unknown substances into costume containers. The joke comes from the labels and behavior, not from chemicals. Keep containers closed, clean, and lightweight.
If you have no white shirt, use any shirt with a clipboard and a large SPECIMEN label. If you have no glasses, skip them. The clipboard and labeled container do most of the recognition work. This is one of the most comfortable choices for sitting, working, or walking through a school or office.

7. Robot
Target build time: 20–30 minutes
Craft level: Moderate
Best for: Children, school parties, groups, and anyone with a clean cardboard box
What you need
- A cardboard shipping, cereal, or appliance box
- Foil, plain paper, newspaper, or gray clothing
- Tape
- Scissors or a craft knife
- Bottle caps, clean lids, paper circles, or buttons
- A marker
- Optional cardboard chest panel, paper control panel, battery symbols, or paper antenna
Cardboard-box robots are a recurring household-material idea in Country Living’s last-minute costume coverage, while HGTV highlights upcycled and household-material approaches.
How to make it
- Flatten the box and decide whether it will be a chest panel or a full torso. A flat panel is usually easier to walk and sit in.
- With the wearer standing nearby, mark the neck, arm, and viewing openings. Remove the box before cutting; never cut cardboard while it is being worn.
- Cut the openings before decorating.
- Cover the cardboard with foil, newspaper, or paper, or leave it plain and draw control panels directly on it.
- Attach bottle caps and paper circles as buttons and dials.
- Add labels such as POWER, ON, or ERROR.
- Test walking, sitting, turning, reaching, and using stairs before wearing it outdoors.
Safer adaptations
- For a young child, use a flat front-and-back panel or decorate a sweatshirt instead of enclosing the torso in a box.
- Avoid cords or straps around the neck, sharp exposed cardboard edges, and any design that blocks peripheral vision.
- If there is no cardboard, wear gray, silver, or ordinary clothes and draw a paper control panel to tape or hold at chest level.
- Use paper antennae rather than wire or pointed materials.
The robot gives the biggest visual payoff for the most construction. It is a good group option: several people can use the same basic control-panel idea while giving each robot a different label or personality.
If you are missing the obvious item
No white sheet
Use white clothes for the ghost, or use dark clothes and make a mummy from a pillowcase, worn T-shirt, or other scrap fabric. If you have neither white clothes nor white fabric, choose the tourist or scientist instead of trying to force a ghost costume.
No black clothes
Make a copycat with any outfit, paper ears, whiskers, and a handwritten sign. Alternatively, choose the tourist, scarecrow, scientist, or robot, none of which depends on a black base layer.
No makeup
Makeup is optional for all seven costumes. Use paper ears, patches, labels, a map, a control panel, or a chest sign. Never substitute craft paint, household paint, marker ink, or cleaning products for cosmetics. The FDA explains that authorization of cosmetic color additives is specific to intended uses; that is not blanket approval of every product or every application on skin.

No cardboard
Make the robot on a gray sweatshirt or ordinary clothes with a paper control panel. Bottle caps and lids are optional; a marker-drawn set of buttons is enough.
No tape or glue
Choose the tourist, scientist, or an all-clothing version of the cat or scarecrow. Fold paper into a name tag and hold it, tuck patches into pockets, or use clothing already in the correct color. Do not improvise with pins near the face, neck, or moving parts.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Choose the tourist or mad scientist. Both can be assembled with clothing and props. You can also make a robot by drawing a control panel on a sheet of paper or wearing a gray outfit without cutting anything.
Almost no supplies at all
Start with the tourist: ordinary clothes plus a phone, tote, or folded piece of paper can suggest the character. A clipboard or notebook can turn ordinary clothes into a scientist. A handwritten label is often more effective than a complicated prop: FIRST TIME HERE, SPECIMEN, or ERROR tells people what they are looking at immediately.
Make any last-minute costume recognizable
Do not keep adding craft pieces when the idea is not reading clearly. Give the costume three cues:
- A strong silhouette: a white ghost, black cat ears, flannel and denim, a wrapped mummy, or a box robot.
- One unmistakable prop or detail: a map, whiskers, patches, a labeled clipboard, or a control panel.
- A behavior or color cue: pose like a tourist, carry out imaginary experiments, speak mechanically, or use a classic fall palette.
If the costume is still unclear, add one large handwritten sign. This is faster and more reliable than constructing several small details. A costume should remain recognizable even if the wearer removes sunglasses, puts on a coat, or sets down a prop.
Choose for the setting and weather
| Situation | Best choices | What to change |
|---|---|---|
| Need the absolute fastest option | Tourist | Use clothes and accessories already on hand; skip all crafting |
| Indoor party | Ghost, mummy, scientist, robot | Still test vision, movement, and comfortable sitting |
| Workplace or school | Tourist, cat, mad scientist | Use badges, a clipboard, or clothing details instead of bulky props |
| Cold weather | Tourist, scarecrow, cat, scientist | Wear the visual details over a coat or warm layers; decorate a sweatshirt instead of wearing cardboard |
| Rain | Tourist, cat, or scientist | Avoid paper-heavy designs, tissue paper, foil-covered cardboard, toilet paper, and loose fabric; protect any paper badge with a plastic covering already available |
| Need to sit or commute | Tourist, cat, scientist, scarecrow | Choose comfortable shoes and avoid floor-length fabric, tight wrapping, and bulky torso boxes |
| Outdoor trick-or-treating | Clothing-based ghost, cat, tourist, scarecrow, or scientist | Prioritize visibility, fit, comfortable shoes, and reflective details |
Outdoor Halloween safety checklist
For trick-or-treating or any nighttime route, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends good fit, clear visibility, reflective material, and flashlights or glow sticks. Its detailed Halloween guidance also addresses masks, ventilation, secure accessories, and flexible props.
- Nothing drags on the ground or can catch under a shoe.
- The wearer can see in all directions and breathe comfortably.
- The wearer can sit, turn, climb steps, and use both hands.
- Shoes are sturdy, comfortable, and appropriate for the route.
- Reflective tape or another reflective detail is added to dark costumes if available.
- A flashlight or glow stick is available after dusk.
- Hats, scarves, ears, and other accessories are secure but not tight around the neck.
- Props are soft and flexible, with no sharp cardboard, wire, glass, or pointed edges.
- No costume material can brush against candles, heaters, fireplaces, or other open flames.
- Young children are not placed in loose sheets, small detachable parts, restrictive boxes, or face coverings.
When choosing fabric, select flame-resistant or flame-retardant materials where possible and avoid loose, flimsy, billowing, or trailing fabric. Flame-resistant does not mean fireproof: the CPSC explains that the label means material should resist burning and extinguish more quickly after removal from an ignition source; it can still catch fire. Do not assume a homemade costume has that protection.

The NFPA also cautions about decorations and materials near open flames. Keep paper, crepe paper, dried plants, loose straw, and fabric away from candles and heat sources. A flashlight is a safer lighting choice than carrying a candle with a costume.
Adaptations for children, allergies, and mobility aids
Children and toddlers
For children, simplify rather than miniaturize an adult costume. Use a white sweatshirt ghost instead of a sheet, a paper-panel robot instead of an enclosing box, and short secure patches instead of loose scarecrow straw. Toddlers should not wear loose sheets, small detachable parts, restrictive cardboard, or anything that covers the eyes, nose, or mouth.
Sensory sensitivities and allergies
Offer a no-makeup version of every costume. Avoid scratchy raffia or straw, tight fabric wrapping, masks, strong-smelling sprays, latex-heavy accessories, and loose pieces near the face. The FDA notes that cosmetics can cause irritation or allergic reactions and recommends testing unfamiliar makeup in advance. A clothing-and-prop version is usually the simplest alternative.
Wheelchairs and mobility aids
Avoid floor-length fabric, tails, dangling strips, and bulky torso boxes. Attach the costume identity to the chair, tray, coat, or upper body instead:
- A robot control panel on the chair or chest
- A tourist map and badge on the tray or jacket
- A scientist clipboard secured where it cannot interfere with wheels
- Scarecrow patches on a jacket
- Cat ears and whiskers without a trailing tail
These are adaptations, not rules about what a particular wearer can do. The wearer should decide which materials and movements are comfortable and practical.
Final choice guide
- Fastest: Tourist.
- Most classic: Ghost.
- Best with black clothes: Black cat.
- Best with fall clothes: Scarecrow.
- Most dramatic: Mummy.
- Best for work or school: Mad scientist.
- Best for kids and cardboard: Robot, using a flat panel for better mobility.
When time is genuinely short, choose the costume that matches your inventory instead of the one that needs the most explanation. One strong clothing cue, one prop or label, and unrestricted movement are enough for a successful last-minute costume.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the fastest Halloween costume to make at home?
The tourist takes about five minutes and requires no crafting: wear a bright or patterned shirt, add sunglasses and a hat, and carry a map, phone, camera, tote, or handwritten tourist badge. It is also one of the safest options for work, commuting, and outdoor use because it does not cover the face or restrict movement.
What can I use instead of a sheet for a ghost costume?
Wear an oversized white T-shirt, hoodie, sweatshirt, fleece, or all-white outfit. Add black paper eyes, a handwritten BOO sign, or safe face makeup. The clothing-based version is preferable for young children and outdoor trick-or-treating because it offers better visibility and mobility.
Can I use regular paint or markers as Halloween face paint?
No. Use only products labeled and intended for cosmetic or skin use. Skip makeup if necessary and use paper ears, patches, labels, or props instead. The FDA warns that cosmetics can irritate skin and that cosmetic color additives are authorized for specific intended uses, not as blanket approval for every product or application.
Which homemade costume is best for trick-or-treating outdoors?
Choose a clothing-based tourist, black cat, scarecrow, scientist, or ghost rather than a loose sheet, tightly wrapped mummy, or bulky box robot. Make sure the costume does not drag, blocks no vision, allows comfortable walking, uses sturdy shoes, and includes reflective material and a flashlight or glow stick after dark when available.

The Bottom Line
Match the costume to the materials already in front of you: tourist for speed, ghost for the classic look, cat for black clothes, scarecrow for flannel, mummy for fabric scraps, scientist for a white shirt and labels, or robot for cardboard. Keep the details simple, make the identity obvious with one prop or sign, and do not sacrifice clear vision, comfortable movement, or fire safety for a faster costume.
