Make an Easter egg hunt feel like an adventure by linking age-appropriate clues to a safe, easy-to-follow route and a satisfying finish. Choose a bounded area, decide how children will find and collect eggs, and prepare an indoor alternative or rain date before the hunt begins.
1. Choose a simple route and a clear finish
Pick a defined space—a room, a yard, or another suitable area—and decide where the hunt ends. The last clue can lead to a hidden basket, a shared prize, or another treat the children can reach without climbing. A clue chain works best when each clue points to one next location, rather than sending children in several directions at once. Hersheyland describes using clue-filled eggs to lead children through a home or backyard to a hidden basket (Hersheyland’s Easter egg hunt ideas).

2. Match clues to the children
Set the challenge by reading ability, not just age. Children who are not reading yet can follow pictures or simple visual cues; early readers can solve short rhymes; older children may enjoy riddles or a basic map. Keep each clue solvable using things the child can see or already understands. Coles and Hersheyland both recommend adapting clues to children’s ages and abilities (Coles’ Easter egg hunt tips; Hersheyland).
3. Make the hunt fair for mixed ages
For a mixed-age group, give younger children a way to find eggs without having to race older children. Place their eggs in visible, reachable spots, or assign colors by age group. In a small group, assigning a color to each child can help each person know which eggs are theirs to find. For a shared hunt, make clear whether eggs are for individuals or everyone to collect together. Hallmark Canada describes color coding as one way to organize a hunt (Hallmark Canada’s hunt-planning guide).

4. Set and explain the boundaries
Before the search starts, show children where they may look and identify off-limits areas. In an open yard or park, ribbons or signs can make the edges easier to see. Keep the route away from places children might climb into or enter unsafely. For a clue-led hunt, the boundaries should cover both the hiding places and every location mentioned in the clues.
5. Check hiding places and count the eggs
Walk the entire route before children begin. Place eggs where they can be reached from the ground, and avoid sharp edges, thorny plants, holes, high branches, unstable furniture, and cupboards or other places children should not open. Keep treats beyond pets’ reach, and count the eggs before and after the search so none are left behind. Nestlé Confectionery also advises checking locations and keeping pets in mind (Nestlé’s guide to planning an Easter egg hunt).

6. Prepare a weather backup
Decide in advance whether rain means moving indoors or rescheduling. An indoor version can use the same clue chain, but limit it to rooms and hiding places that are safe for the children; no clue should require climbing on furniture. An alternative date is useful when moving the hunt inside is not practical. Coles, Nestlé Confectionery, and Hallmark Canada all include a backup plan as part of hunt planning (Coles; Nestlé Confectionery; Hallmark Canada).

Fillable plastic eggs can hold a clue slip or a small treat, while baskets, bags, or buckets give children somewhere to put what they find. Colored eggs, signs, or stickers can distinguish age groups, mark boundaries, or identify non-candy items. These are conveniences, not requirements: handwritten clues and containers you already have can work just as well. Hallmark Canada also suggests sound-making eggs for children with visual impairments, and non-candy contents where those better suit the participants. For an outdoor color-based activity, the Royal Horticultural Society’s rainbow scavenger hunt suggests considering color-vision differences and respecting nature.
