The safest starting point for free commercial-use fonts in 2026 is Google Fonts. Its fonts are open source and Google says they can be used in commercial and non-commercial projects. Fontshare is another strong source, while Adobe Fonts is useful when you already use its subscription service.
“Free” does not automatically mean “safe for every commercial use.” A font may allow logos and printed artwork while restricting font-file redistribution, self-hosting, app embedding, modification, or client handoff. This guide separates those uses and links to official sources. Availability and license information were checked against the supplied research dated August 16–18, 2026; recheck the applicable license immediately before production use.
Quick picks: the best free commercial-use fonts
| Font | Best for | Source and license note |

| Inter | UI, SaaS, product design | Google Fonts; verify the current family license |
| Roboto | Apps and general-purpose layouts | Google Fonts; verify the current family license |
| Open Sans | Websites and readable body text | Google Fonts; verify the current family license |
| Poppins | Geometric branding | Google Fonts; verify the current family license |
| Manrope | Contemporary technology brands | Google Fonts; verify the current family license |
| Noto Sans | Multilingual projects | Google Fonts; verify language coverage and license |

| Bebas Neue | Posters, packaging, headlines | Google Fonts; verify the current family license |
| Press Start 2P | Arcade and game graphics | Google Fonts; check app and game embedding terms |
These are editorial recommendations, not an objective ranking. “Commercial use” below means that commercial artwork is permitted under the applicable terms; it does not mean that every way of distributing the font file is unrestricted.
What counts as commercial use?
Commercial use includes paid client work, business logos, brand identities, business websites, e-commerce graphics, advertising, packaging, books, paid publications, social campaigns, YouTube and commercial video, apps, games, PDFs, merchandise, presentations, templates, and downloadable documents.

The font license governs the font software. It does not usually give the typeface creator ownership of every poster, logo, video, or document made with that software. The permissions still depend on the specific license and implementation.
For every font, distinguish between:
- Using the font to create static artwork or a logo.
- Embedding it in a PDF, e-book, website, app, or game.
- Self-hosting webfont files.
- Modifying the font software.
- Sending the font file to a client, printer, contractor, or developer.
- Bundling the font in a template, software product, or brand kit.

Commercial font licenses explained
Google Fonts and the SIL Open Font License
Google says its fonts are open source and usable in commercial projects. Google’s repository explains that most families use the SIL Open Font License, while some use Apache License 2.0 and Ubuntu fonts use the Ubuntu Font License. Each family directory contains the relevant license file and metadata.
In practical terms, OFL 1.1 generally permits commercial use, copying, redistribution, modification, and embedding in documents, websites, and software. However, the font software may not be sold by itself; license and copyright notices must accompany redistributed font software; modified versions remain under the OFL; and Reserved Font Names may prevent a modified font from keeping the original name.
Read the family’s actual license rather than assuming every Google Fonts family has identical terms. Sources: Google Fonts documentation, Google Fonts repository, Google’s license guidance, and SIL Open Font License.
Fontshare
Fontshare states that its fonts are free for personal and commercial use, but it offers both SIL OFL families and proprietary fonts under the Indian Type Foundry Free Font License. Those categories are not interchangeable.
An OFL family follows OFL conditions. The proprietary FFL may permit logos and graphic elements while restricting modification, redistribution, font serving, font-replacement technologies, or passing the font software to external designers, service providers, or printers. Read the exact terms at Fontshare’s overview, Fontshare’s OFL terms, and Fontshare’s ITF FFL.
Adobe Fonts
Adobe Fonts is a service, not the same thing as downloading and owning an unrestricted font file. Adobe states that its library is cleared for commercial design work, websites, PDFs, and video through the service. Adobe separately identifies app embedding, self-hosting, and enterprise or volume use as areas that may need additional licensing.

It is a poor fit when a client needs permanent independent font files, when a font must be bundled inside an app or game, or when a website must self-host the files without relying on the service. See Adobe’s open-source collection and its licensing example.
Website, app, PDF, and client-delivery rules
Websites
There are three different workflows:
- Hosted webfont service: for example, Google Fonts CSS or another permitted service.
- Self-hosted files: downloading WOFF or WOFF2 files and serving them from your own domain.
- Outlined or image text: converting type into artwork, which changes the technical distribution issue but does not erase other license conditions.
Google provides a webfont stylesheet workflow and developer documentation at developers.google.com/fonts. Do not assume a Fontshare proprietary FFL font can be self-hosted or used with a font-replacement method simply because another OFL font can.
Apps and games
App embedding is a separate checkpoint. OFL fonts generally permit embedding subject to the license, but implementation still matters. Proprietary freeware licenses may restrict embedding. An app should also prevent users from extracting or editing the font where the license requires that protection. A desktop license or subscription-service entitlement is not automatically an app license.
PDFs, e-books, video, and templates
Using a permitted font to create a PDF, video, presentation, or static design is different from distributing the underlying font file. Before delivering an editable template or downloadable document, check whether the recipient can access, extract, edit, or redistribute the font.

Do not send a font file merely because the client paid for the design. Some licenses permit the artwork but restrict giving the software to a client, printer, or outside designer. When necessary, send outlined artwork, provide a flattened export, or direct the recipient to the official download page. Fontshare’s FFL has specific restrictions in this area, with limited secured-document and printing scenarios.
How to verify a font before production
- Open the official family page or repository.
- Download the current package.
- Locate the license file.
- Record the exact license name and version.
- Confirm that all selected weights and styles use the same terms.
- Check Reserved Font Names.
- Check web embedding, app, game, e-book, and document rules.
- Check whether modification is allowed.
- Save the license with the project or client records.
- Record the source URL and verification date.
- Tell the client about any redistribution or embedding restriction.
- Recheck before launch, final delivery, or a major license change.
Common mistakes
- “Free” means commercial. It may mean free download, personal use, a trial, or free access through a subscription.
- The preview page is treated as the license. Use the license file or official terms.
- A desktop font is self-hosted. Desktop, web, app, and e-book permissions can differ.
- A webfont is bundled into an app. App distribution may need separate permission or technical protection.
- The font is modified but keeps its original name. Check Reserved Font Names under OFL.
- A marketplace badge is treated as final proof. Third-party directories can contain old versions or incomplete files.
- All weights are assumed to share one license. Verify the actual package and version.
- Logo use is confused with font ownership. A permitted logo does not transfer ownership of the typeface software.
- No attribution is assumed. A license may not require credit for ordinary artwork while still requiring notices when the font software is redistributed.
Final recommendation
Start with Google Fonts when you want the simplest general-purpose workflow for branding, web, UI, print, and client work. Choose Fontshare when you want more distinctive families, but first determine whether the selected family uses OFL or the more restrictive ITF FFL. Use Adobe Fonts when its service model fits your existing Adobe workflow, and investigate separate terms for self-hosting, app embedding, or independent file delivery.
For every project, archive the license, source URL, exact font package, and verification date. That small habit is more reliable than trusting the word “free” on a download page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use these fonts in a logo?
Generally, fonts from Google Fonts and Fontshare can be used to create logo artwork under their stated terms. That does not give you ownership of the typeface software or guarantee trademark registration. Check redistribution and modification rules separately.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Can I use them for paid client work?
Commercial client work is generally permitted for the Google Fonts and Fontshare families covered here under their applicable licenses. Confirm the exact family license before production.
Can I sell products made with these fonts?
Usually, commercial artwork and products are permitted under the applicable license. The restriction is often on selling or redistributing the font software itself, not on selling a poster, package, video, or other finished design.
Can I use them in a YouTube video?
Commercial video use is generally supported by the relevant Google Fonts terms and by Adobe Fonts through its service. Check the exact license if you are distributing editable project files or font files.
Can I upload them to a website?
Often yes, but distinguish hosted webfont use from self-hosting downloaded files. Google provides a webfont workflow; Fontshare’s proprietary FFL may impose additional serving restrictions.
Can I embed them in an app or game?
Do not assume so from a desktop or web permission. Check app-embedding terms, extraction protections, and any separate Adobe or proprietary-license requirements.
Can I send a font file to a printer or client?
Only if the license permits that redistribution. If it does not, send outlined artwork or direct the recipient to the official download source.
Do I need to credit the designer?
Ordinary finished artwork may not require attribution, but redistributing font software can require license and copyright notices. Follow the exact license.
Can I modify the font?
OFL fonts generally permit modification subject to OFL conditions and Reserved Font Names. Proprietary licenses such as Fontshare’s ITF FFL may restrict modification.
What happens if the license changes later?
Keep the license file, font package, source URL, and verification date used for the project. Recheck the current terms before new production use; do not assume a current web page preserves every historical condition.
