The best Chrome extension for identifying a font depends on where the type appears. For selectable text on a live webpage, start with WhatFont. For screenshots, logos, and image-based headlines, use Font Identifier by WhatFontIs. Designers researching alternatives, foundries, and licensing will get more from Fonts Ninja, while developers investigating the actual webfont file should consider FontScout.

No extension can guarantee the original design font in every situation. Tools may report a CSS declaration, a fallback font, font-file metadata, or a visual match—and those are not the same thing.

Versions, user counts, ratings, update dates, and privacy disclosures are volatile Chrome Web Store information. The supplied listings were checked August 18, 2026. Ratings and user counts are signals of reach and feedback volume, not independent accuracy tests.

1. WhatFont: best overall for fast webpage checks

WhatFont is the easiest default for answering “what font is this?” while browsing. Activate it, hover over text, and it identifies the typeface. Clicking an element reveals additional applied styles, including details such as size, weight, and color.

The listing shows version 3.2.0, approximately 3 million users, and a 4.0/5 rating from roughly 2,100 ratings. It was last updated March 4, 2024. That large user base makes it the most established option in this shortlist, but it does not prove that WhatFont is technically more accurate than every newer tool.

Best for

  • Quickly inspecting ordinary HTML text.
  • Checking one heading, button, menu item, or paragraph at a time.
  • Readers who do not want to open DevTools.

Strengths

  • Fast hover-based workflow.
  • Simple interface for non-developers.
  • Useful style and color information after selecting an element.

Limitations

WhatFont is primarily a live-web inspector, not an image-recognition service or font-file analyzer. It may display a declared or computed CSS family without proving that the family supplied the rendered glyphs. Its older update date is also worth noting when Chrome or a website behaves unexpectedly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verdict: Choose WhatFont when speed and simplicity matter more than deep webfont analysis.

2. Fontanello: best lightweight CSS inspector

Fontanello puts typography information in Chrome’s context menu. Select or right-click text to inspect the typeface, weight, size, color, contrast, and related CSS properties.

The listing shows version 1.3.0, approximately 60,000 users, and a 4.6/5 rating from 47 ratings. Its last update was April 21, 2024. The store disclosure says the developer does not collect or use user data; that is a publisher disclosure rather than an independent privacy audit.

Best for

  • Developers checking CSS typography.
  • Accessibility-minded design reviews where contrast is relevant.
  • Users who prefer right-clicking rather than activating a hover mode.

Trade-offs

Fontanello is focused on selected webpage text and does not provide a primary image-identification workflow. It can also be less convenient than hover-based tools when checking many elements. As with other CSS inspectors, its result may describe the browser’s style information rather than the exact font file that rendered every character.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verdict: A strong lightweight choice, particularly if a right-click workflow and privacy disclosure are priorities. Its 2024 update date means it should not be described as actively maintained in 2026 without a newer listing check.

3. Fonts Ninja: best for font research and discovery

Fonts Ninja is for readers who want to do more than identify a family name. It identifies fonts on websites, shows CSS properties while hovering, summarizes the fonts used on a page, and supports bookmarks, sharing, previews, similar-font discovery, foundry details, and price information.

Rank #2
HP 14" HD Chromebook Laptop for Students, Intel Quad-Core N4120(> N4020), 4GB RAM, 64GB eMMC, WiFi, Webcam, HDMI, USB-A&C, 14 Hours Battery Life, Zoom, Chrome OS, CUE Accessories
  • Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.

Its publisher also describes “Font DNA,” an algorithm for analyzing font files. That is a product feature claim, not an independently benchmarked accuracy result.

The listing shows version 8.0.4, approximately 800,000 users, and a 4.4/5 rating from 895 ratings. It was updated July 10, 2025.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best for

  • Building a font collection or mood board.
  • Researching typography for a redesign or brand project.
  • Finding similar typefaces when the original is too expensive or unavailable.
  • Investigating foundry, price, license type, and related options.

Privacy and limitations

Its additional discovery features make Fonts Ninja more involved than WhatFont or Fontanello. The Chrome listing discloses handling personally identifiable information, authentication information, and location. Review the current store privacy details before installing, especially on sensitive work.

Prices, licensing links, and availability can change. A “similar” font is not automatically metrically identical, legally interchangeable, or licensed for the same uses.

Verdict: The best pick when identifying a font is the beginning of a design and licensing decision rather than the end.

4. Font Identifier by WhatFontIs: best for webpage and image workflows

Font Identifier by WhatFontIs combines live-page inspection with image matching. You can hover over webpage text, capture a visible area, send the image for analysis, review identification history, and compare likely matches with free and commercial alternatives.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The publisher describes the broader WhatFontIs workflow as a way to identify fonts from webpages and images, then explore similar choices.

The listing shows version 2.5.10, approximately 10,000 users, and a 3.6/5 rating from 29 ratings. It was updated April 28, 2026. The listing discloses handling website content and says data is not sold or used outside approved or core purposes. Check the current disclosure before submitting confidential images.

Best for

  • Switching between selectable text and screenshots.
  • Logos, banners, thumbnails, and image-based headlines.
  • Finding free or commercial substitutes for a commercial typeface.

Limitations

Image matching depends on crop quality, contrast, resolution, the number of characters, and the distinctiveness of the letterforms. A lower store rating than some competitors is also relevant context, although the review sample is small. “Similar” means visually comparable—not licensed for your project or guaranteed to have the same metrics.

Verdict: The strongest hybrid choice for readers who regularly encounter both live text and text embedded in images.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. FontScout: best for advanced font-file inspection

FontScout addresses a problem that CSS-only tools can miss: the name shown in a stylesheet may not reveal the identity of the underlying font file.

Its listing claims that it can parse font binaries, match weight-aware @font-face rules, resolve hashed or obfuscated filenames, and identify the system font behind generic values such as system-ui or sans-serif. It can display WOFF2, WOFF, TTF, and OTF formats, show CSS properties and previews, and download webfonts as a ZIP containing the original file, decompressed TTF/OTF files, license information, and a README.

The listing shows version 1.0.2, a 5.0/5 rating from 8 ratings, and approximately 102 users. It was updated April 6, 2026. The publisher states that it operates locally and collects no data.

Best for

  • Developers dealing with hashed font filenames.
  • Checking the internal family and style names in a webfont.
  • Investigating variable fonts and multiple weight rules.
  • Understanding which font formats a page serves.

Important limitation

FontScout is newer and has a very small user base and review history. Its claims should not be treated as independently verified benchmarks. More importantly, downloading a font file does not grant permission to use it. A license may restrict desktop installation, client work, embedding, redistribution, or modification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verdict: Choose FontScout for technical investigation, not as the universal best extension.

6. What the Font – find font & color: best simple alternative

What the Font offers a straightforward three-step process: activate the extension, hover over or click text, and view the family, style, weight, size, line height, and color.

The listing shows version 1.0.4, approximately 10,000 users, and a 4.6/5 rating from 33 ratings. It was updated March 25, 2025.

Its small user base and review sample make the rating poor evidence for superior accuracy. There is also no evidence in the supplied listing that it performs image recognition or font-file parsing. The similar name can make it easy to confuse with other WhatFont-branded tools.

Verdict: A credible basic inspector if you want family and color information, but not a feature leader.

7. Font Finder by WhatFont: best minimal click-to-inspect utility

Font Finder by WhatFont is designed for a small, uncomplicated task: enable it, click a word, and read the font family, size, weight, line height, style, and RGB color code.

The listing shows version 2.1.11, approximately 5,000 users, and a 4.4/5 rating from 8 ratings. It was updated September 2, 2023—the oldest maintenance signal in this comparison.

Because the name, publisher identity, user count, and review volume are easy to confuse with other font tools, confirm that you are installing the intended listing. Its age does not prove that it is unsafe or unusable, but it does make compatibility and future support less certain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verdict: A minimal fallback for basic CSS typography checks, rather than a cutting-edge 2026 recommendation.

8. Font Finder by Image: best image-first option

Font Finder by Image is intended for uploading or pasting a screenshot to discover likely fonts. That makes it relevant when a logo, poster, scanned document, thumbnail, or headline contains no selectable HTML text.

The available evidence for this specific listing is weaker than for the other entries. Before installing, confirm that the listing is live, check its current version and update date, and read its data-handling disclosure. In particular, determine whether images are analyzed locally or uploaded to a third-party service, and whether the extension is a standalone recognizer or a wrapper around an online tool.

Verdict: Consider it for screenshot-first work only after checking the current Chrome Web Store listing. It is not a replacement for live-page inspectors.

Which extension should you choose?

  • Fastest answer on a webpage: WhatFont.
  • Right-click CSS details and contrast: Fontanello.
  • Font collections, previews, and licensing research: Fonts Ninja.
  • Both webpage text and images: Font Identifier by WhatFontIs.
  • Actual webfont files, aliases, and hashed names: FontScout.
  • Basic alternatives: What the Font or Font Finder by WhatFont.
  • Screenshot-first identification: Font Finder by Image, after verifying its current listing and upload behavior.

How to identify a font on a live webpage

  1. Install the extension from its official Chrome Web Store listing and pin it from Chrome’s Extensions menu.
  2. Open the page containing the type and activate the extension from the toolbar or context menu.
  3. Hover over or select the exact text element.
  4. Record the family, weight, style, size, line height, and color.
  5. Inspect a second element—especially a heading, bold label, italic phrase, navigation item, and body paragraph. Websites often use several families or variable-font instances.
  6. If the result is a generic family, alias, or hashed identifier, inspect the font file with a file-aware tool such as FontScout.
  7. If the text is part of an image, canvas, or inaccessible embedded document, switch to image recognition.

How to identify a font in an image

  1. Crop tightly around several letters and remove unnecessary background.
  2. Use horizontal, high-contrast text whenever possible.
  3. Correct perspective, rotation, or severe distortion if you can.
  4. Include distinctive characters, but avoid a sample that is only one or two letters.
  5. Submit the crop through an image-focused extension or the WhatFontIs workflow.
  6. Compare several candidates instead of accepting the first result.
  7. Check letter proportions, numerals, punctuation, diacritics, and distinctive forms such as capital R, G, Q, and M or lowercase a, g, and e.
  8. Verify weight, width, and optical size separately. A correct family in the wrong width can still look substantially different.

Image results are visual estimates. Low-resolution anti-aliasing, unusual scripts, curved or rotated lettering, and mixed-script fallback can all produce misleading matches.

Best Value

  • 【Powerful Performance】Equipped with an Intel N150 CPU, featuring up to 4.4 GHz, ensuring efficient and powerful multitasking capabilities.

Why font extensions disagree

“Font identification” can mean several different things:

  • Declared CSS family: the name written in font-family, such as "Brand Sans", Arial, sans-serif.
  • Computed CSS family: the value reported by the browser after styles are applied.
  • Actually rendered font: the font that supplied the glyph after loading, fallback, and platform substitution.
  • Font-file metadata: family and style names stored inside a WOFF2, WOFF, TTF, or OTF file.
  • Visual match: an algorithmic estimate based on an image.
  • Similar font: a substitute with comparable visual characteristics.

A CSS inspector can correctly read the stylesheet while the browser is actually using a fallback because the webfont failed to load, a request was blocked, or the font lacks a particular glyph. Variable fonts may expose one family with many weight, width, or optical-size values. Subsetting and unicode-range declarations can also cause different files—or different fallback fonts—to supply different characters.

What to do when the reported font looks wrong

  1. Check another element. Headings, body copy, buttons, icons, and navigation may use different rules.
  2. Check the weight. A variable font may use a single family with a nonstandard instance.
  3. Check loading and fallback. A family name alone does not prove that its file loaded or rendered.
  4. Try different characters. Missing glyphs can trigger per-character fallback.
  5. Check pseudo-elements. Text may be generated through ::before or ::after.
  6. Check SVG and canvas. Text rendered as graphics may not expose ordinary CSS font information.
  7. Consider frames and shadow DOM. Cross-origin iframes and closed shadow roots can limit what an extension can inspect.
  8. Use a screenshot workflow. This is appropriate for rasterized or inaccessible text.
  9. Compare the actual file. Font-file parsing can clarify aliases, internal names, and formats.
  10. Check the license separately. Identification never establishes permission to reuse a font.

Privacy, permissions, and maintenance

Extensions that inspect pages require some level of access to website content. Image workflows may also send captured content to an external recognition service. The Chrome Web Store disclosures supplied for this comparison state that WhatFont and Fontanello do not collect or use data; Fonts Ninja discloses handling personally identifiable information, authentication information, and location; Font Identifier by WhatFontIs discloses website-content handling; and FontScout states that it collects no data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These are publisher-provided disclosures, not independent audits, and they can change. Before installing, review the current permissions, privacy section, developer identity, update date, and whether images or page content leave your browser.

Maintenance dates are useful trust signals but not proof of quality. This list ranges from an April 2026 update for Font Identifier by WhatFontIs to a September 2023 update for Font Finder by WhatFont. A highly rated extension with eight reviews should not automatically outrank one rated 4.0 from roughly 2,100 ratings.

Identification is not a font license

Once you know the family, visit the foundry or an authorized vendor to confirm the permitted use. A font downloaded from a webpage is not automatically reusable. Desktop installation, client work, web embedding, app distribution, modification, and redistribution may each have separate terms.

For alternatives, Google Fonts is useful when an open or freely available webfont meets the design requirements. Adobe Fonts can suit readers already using Creative Cloud, but subscription-based access is not the same as standalone ownership. MyFonts is relevant for purchasing commercial families, although price and licensing vary by foundry, style, and usage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Free for personal use” is not the same as free for commercial use, and a visually similar font may have entirely different licensing terms.
