For conversational image editing, Nano Banana is the strongest candidate of the three. It lets you upload an image, describe a change in ordinary language, inspect the result, and continue refining it. Stable Diffusion remains the better choice for local control, custom models, repeatable pipelines, and privacy. Midjourney remains exceptionally strong for fast, polished visual ideation and now offers a capable web Editor.

The important distinction is that these are not equivalent products. Nano Banana is a family of Google Gemini image-generation and editing models; Stable Diffusion is an ecosystem of models and tools; Midjourney is primarily a hosted creative platform. The right winner depends on whether you value conversational editing, technical control, or aesthetic exploration.

The real test is editing, not image generation

Generating an attractive image from a prompt is relatively easy to demonstrate. Editing an existing image is harder:

A capable editor must change the requested area without damaging everything around it. That means preserving identity, product proportions, lighting, perspective, text, spatial relationships, and composition. A beautiful new image is not necessarily a successful edit.

For that reason, the useful criteria are:

• Locality: how much of the untouched image changes.
• Identity preservation: whether faces, bodies, and expressions remain consistent.
• Reference fidelity: whether a product, character, or object keeps its appearance.
• Text rendering: whether signs, labels, and posters remain accurate.
• Iterative consistency: whether successive edits cause cumulative drift.
• Control and reproducibility: whether masks, seeds, settings, layers, and versions can be retained.
• Workflow cost: not just generation fees, but also operator time and correction work.

The short verdict

This is a use-case verdict, not a universal image-quality ranking. A carefully configured Stable Diffusion workflow can outperform a hosted model on a specialized task, while Midjourney may produce a more compelling concept than either competitor.

What Nano Banana actually is in 2026

“Nano Banana” began as an informal name for Google’s Gemini image-generation technology and became the public shorthand for the Gemini image family. Google’s developer documentation originally identified the model gemini-2.5-flash-image as Gemini 2.5 Flash Image. Current Google materials distinguish among Nano Banana, Nano Banana 2, Nano Banana 2 Lite, and Nano Banana Pro, with different capabilities, limits, latency, resolution, and availability.

Google presents the family as Gemini image-generation and editing models integrated into a multimodal system—not simply as a conventional diffusion checkpoint. Depending on the product, readers may encounter it in Gemini, Google AI Studio, the Gemini API, or Google Cloud. Model names and access can vary by country, plan, interface, and date, so “Nano Banana” should not be treated as one fixed model.

Google’s current developer documentation describes newer Gemini image models as supporting image generation and editing, low-latency use cases, Google Search grounding, and output up to 4K in the relevant API workflow. “Up to 4K” should be understood as a model- and workflow-specific capability, not a guarantee that every Gemini interface returns a native 4K image.

Google’s Gemini help documentation identifies Nano Banana 2 as the model selected when image generation is requested with Gemini Flash or Pro, while Nano Banana Pro is available for certain higher-detail redo operations through eligible Google AI plans. These labels and entitlements can change quickly. This comparison reflects the documented landscape around August 18, 2026.

Google also says Gemini-generated or edited images include a visible watermark and invisible SynthID watermarking in the Gemini app. That matters for creators who need clean deliverables or who must disclose synthetic media.

Why conversational editing could be Google’s advantage

The distinctive feature is not merely that Nano Banana can accept an input image. It is that the interaction can remain a conversation:

1. Upload an image.
2. Describe the intended change.
3. State explicitly what must remain unchanged.
4. Inspect the result.
5. Point out the error in ordinary language.
6. Continue from the latest version.

A useful first prompt is:

Keep the person’s face, pose, hairstyle, camera angle, lighting, and background unchanged. Replace only the jacket with a dark green waterproof shell. Preserve realistic folds and the original body proportions.

If the face drifts, a follow-up can be specific:

The face changed too much. Restore the original facial identity and modify only the jacket. Do not alter the expression, hairstyle, pose, or background.

This changes the unit of work from a single generation prompt to an editing dialogue. The model can reason about several images, objects, people, and relationships in one exchange. That is especially useful for tasks such as removing an object while preserving its shadow, placing the same product in multiple scenes, changing weather without changing composition, or combining reference images.

It is not magic. Identity can drift, backgrounds can change, and repeated edits can gradually degrade an image. The result depends on the model tier, source image, wording, number of revisions, and interface. Nano Banana should be described as a strong candidate for conversational editing—not as a system that always preserves identity or makes perfectly local edits.

Stable Diffusion: the control-oriented alternative

Stable Diffusion is not one product competing with one Google model. It is an ecosystem encompassing model weights, checkpoints, local interfaces, hosted services, extensions, custom adapters, and third-party workflows. A result from Stability AI’s API is not equivalent to a local SDXL checkpoint with a custom LoRA and structural guidance.

Its major strengths include:

• Local or self-hosted execution where hardware and licensing permit it.
• Custom checkpoints for particular styles or subjects.
• LoRAs and other adapters for specialized concepts.
• Mask-based inpainting and outpainting.
• Pose, depth, edge, and reference conditioning.
• Node-based or scripted production pipelines.
• Seeds and saved parameters for repeatability.
• Batch processing and integration with existing tools.

Stability AI’s current developer platform lists Stable Diffusion 3.5 variants alongside services for inpainting, outpainting, object erasure, background removal, and upscaling. Its pricing page states that one credit equals $0.01 and that new users receive 25 free credits. Listed API examples include 6.5 credits for Stable Diffusion 3.5 Large, 4 credits for Large Turbo, 5 credits for inpainting, and 4 credits for outpainting.

Those are hosted API prices, not the cost of local operation. A local workflow may avoid per-image API charges but requires suitable hardware, storage, setup time, maintenance, and model-specific licensing.

The trade-off is complexity. Users may need to choose a checkpoint, interface, sampler, resolution, denoising strength, mask, seed, control module, upscaler, and commercial-use license. That is inconvenient for a casual editor but valuable to an artist or developer who needs to reproduce a result precisely.

“Open source” is too broad a description. More precise terms are “open-weight ecosystem” or “openly distributed models,” because license terms vary by model and release. Stable Diffusion is the strongest option here for control, customization, local privacy, and pipeline engineering—not necessarily for the quickest natural-language edit.

Midjourney is no longer just a prompt box

It is outdated to describe Midjourney as text-to-image only. Its web Editor supports inpainting through erase-and-regenerate operations, outpainting, pan and zoom, resizing, aspect-ratio changes, layers, smart selection, retexturing, external image uploads, and prompt suggestions through image description.

That makes Midjourney a meaningful editing environment, especially for designers who want a polished result without building a technical pipeline. Its strengths remain its distinctive aesthetic, speed of visual exploration, and hosted workflow.

Its limitations are different from Stable Diffusion’s. Midjourney is less open to custom model experimentation, offers less low-level control, and remains platform-dependent. Its documentation currently states that V8.1 images can be opened in the Editor while the Editor uses V6.1 functionality. That is a useful warning: “Midjourney” does not always identify one uniform model and one uniform editing engine.

Midjourney’s listed plans are Basic at $10 per month, Standard at $30, Pro at $60, and Mega at $120, with annual prices listed as $96, $288, $576, and $1,152. Standard, Pro, and Mega include unlimited image generations in Relax Mode according to its plan comparison. Stealth Mode is listed for Pro and Mega, so privacy should not be assumed by default.

Midjourney says users own images and videos they create subject to exceptions and its terms, and says businesses generating more than $1 million in annual gross revenue must use Pro or Mega for commercial use. Those are contractual platform terms, not a guarantee of copyright protection in every jurisdiction.

Consult Midjourney’s Editor documentation, plan comparison, and commercial-use policy before committing to a workflow.

Head-to-head comparison

What a fair image-editing test looks like

Any serious comparison should use the same source image, prompt, output dimensions, and evaluation criteria. A spectacular Midjourney concept should not be compared with a difficult Nano Banana restoration task.

Localized edits

• Remove a lamp from a room.
• Change only the wall color.
• Replace a shirt.
• Add sunglasses without changing the face.
• Remove a person from the background.

Measure how much of the supposedly untouched region changes.

Identity and object consistency

• Edit the same portrait three times.
• Place the same product in three environments.
• Change a product’s color without changing its shape.
• Perform a sequence of edits from one previous output.

Check facial identity, logos, dimensions, geometry, and cumulative drift.

Text rendering

• Correct one word on a storefront sign.
• Create a product label.
• Generate a poster with a headline and supporting text.
• Edit text on a perspective-distorted surface.

Check spelling, legibility, layout, and whether unrelated text changes. Text is not a solved problem. Curved surfaces, small type, handwriting, dense documents, multiple languages, and exact logos remain difficult for all three approaches.

Restoration and transformation

• Repair an old photograph.
• Upscale a low-resolution image.
• Extend the image beyond its borders.
• Change daytime to nighttime.

Distinguish restoration from plausible invention. If information is missing, an AI system may create a convincing face, building, garment, or letter that was never recoverable from the original.

Workflow friction

Record the number of steps, need for masks, manual parameter tuning, time to an acceptable result, undo or version history, export resolution, and whether the result can be reproduced later. The cheapest generation is not necessarily the cheapest finished image:

Cost per acceptable image = generation cost + operator time + correction cost + licensing and compliance overhead.

Where each tool fits

Choose Nano Banana when:

• You want to describe edits instead of constructing a technical node graph.
• You need several related changes in one conversation.
• The image contains people, products, or spatial relationships that should remain coherent.
• Reference-image reasoning and contextual instructions matter.
• You want Gemini API, AI Studio, or Google Cloud integration.

Choose Stable Diffusion when:

• Images must remain on local infrastructure.
• You need custom checkpoints, LoRAs, adapters, masks, seeds, or structural guidance.
• You are building a repeatable batch pipeline.
• You need maximum control over denoising, composition, and output behavior.
• Your team can manage hardware, model versions, and licenses.

Choose Midjourney when:

• Fast visual ideation is more important than exact reproducibility.
• You want a distinctive, polished aesthetic with little setup.

Recommendations by user

• Casual photo editor: Start with Nano Banana for ordinary natural-language changes. Use a conventional editor for exact retouching.
• Social-media creator: Midjourney is excellent for concepts and stylized campaigns; Nano Banana is more suitable when an existing photo must be changed conversationally.
• Photographer: Use Nano Banana or Midjourney for exploration, but preserve original product or portrait layers when identity and geometry matter.
• Product marketer: Use AI for backgrounds and environments, then retain the original product layer or verify every logo, label, and dimension manually.
• Concept artist: Midjourney offers rapid aesthetic exploration; Stable Diffusion offers deeper customization and repeatability.

Important failure modes

Identity drift

Repeated edits can alter a person’s age, face, hairstyle, body shape, or expression. Compare every result with the original. A conversational workflow does not guarantee indefinite identity preservation.

Product and logo distortion

AI editors can change packaging text, serial numbers, buttons, logos, and exact geometry. For commercial product photography, AI-generated backgrounds are often safer than asking the model to redraw the product itself.

False restoration

Call the result a plausible reconstruction unless the missing detail is independently known. A convincing restoration is not necessarily an accurate one.

Flattened output

A convincing result may still be unsuitable for professional compositing if it does not provide transparent PNGs, separate layers, masks, original-resolution pixels, or an editable project file. Midjourney’s Editor supports layers and transparent exports for certain operations, but that is not the same as a fully editable layered project.

Privacy and sensitive images

Review retention, sharing, training, and enterprise-account terms before uploading family photos, medical images, confidential documents, unreleased products, client work, or legal evidence. A local workflow may be preferable when data cannot leave the organization.

Version mismatch

Record the model name or ID, date, region, plan, interface, resolution, prompt, reference images, and whether the result was regenerated or edited. This is particularly important when a brand spans several Nano Banana generations or when Midjourney’s Editor and generation model use different versions.

Could Google actually redefine image editing?

Yes—but probably by changing the default interaction rather than eliminating every competing workflow. If a user can reliably say “change this object, preserve that person, keep the lighting, and correct the sign,” conversational editing could replace manual masking for a large class of everyday jobs.

That does not remove Stable Diffusion’s advantages. Local execution, custom models, adapters, saved parameters, masks, structural controls, and automation remain valuable wherever predictability and ownership of the pipeline matter. Nor does it remove Midjourney’s appeal: a strong visual point of view can be more useful during ideation than neutral control.

The likely outcome is segmentation:

• Nano Banana captures natural-language, context-aware editing.
• Stable Diffusion remains the power-user, customization, privacy, and infrastructure choice.
• Midjourney remains a major platform for polished visual concepts and increasingly capable hosted editing.

For finished artwork, advertising, publishing, or brand work, none of these tools replaces a conventional editor when exact typography, layers, color management, original product geometry, or legally defensible accuracy is required.
