Simple Easter Bunny surprises can make the holiday feel special without requiring a big basket or expensive supplies. Try a clue trail, a low-pressure craft, a shared story, or another activity that suits your family’s ages, traditions, budget, and access needs.
These eight ideas are options, not requirements. Use household items or free printables where possible, check dietary needs before serving food, and adapt or skip activities to fit your family’s religious and cultural preferences.
1. Make the egg hunt a trail of clues
Have the Easter Bunny leave clue eggs that lead children from one spot to the next, ending at a basket or a shared surprise. This works indoors or outdoors; keep the route and hiding places suitable for the children taking part. Hersheyland’s hunt ideas include clue-based hunts that lead to a hidden basket.
- For young children: Use pictures or simple clues about familiar places.
- For older children: Try short riddles or a simple map.
What you need: Paper clues and, optionally, eggs to hold them. Household materials are enough.

2. Assign each child a color
Give each child a specific egg color and let everyone search at the same time. Color assignments can make the hunt less competitive and help personalize each child’s eggs. Check food allergies and dietary needs before putting treats inside; eggs can also hold notes or small non-food surprises. Hersheyland describes color-coded hunts as one way to adapt a hunt for children of different ages.
What you need: Colored eggs, or a way to mark eggs with each child’s color. Refillable plastic eggs are one option; you can also use color-coded paper clues.
3. Create a bunny trail for toddlers
Make a guided trail from a starting point to the first egg, then continue from egg to egg until toddlers reach the basket. A ribbon or string can mark the route. Keep the eggs easy to reach and adjust the trail to the child’s needs and the space available.

Choose ideas that fit your family
Consider the children’s ages and abilities, your available space, group size, preparation time, budget, dietary needs, and whether you want a religious activity. You can combine a few ideas or choose just one. Guidance from New Zealand’s Office of ECE for early childhood services emphasizes consulting families about religious and cultural preferences and checking food needs; those are useful considerations for planning at home, too.
