You can turn a photo into an anime-inspired illustration without ChatGPT using Adobe Firefly’s Anime Generator Image to Image feature. For reference-guided alternatives, Adobe Generative Match and Midjourney Style Reference offer different ways to guide a generation. Describe the visual qualities you want and aim for an original illustration; no tool guarantees an exact style or faithful likeness.

Method 1: Transform a photo with Firefly Anime Generator
Adobe documents an Image to Image feature in its Anime Generator for transforming a real-world image into anime art. Adobe says the feature can preserve details such as composition and lighting, but that does not guarantee the subject’s identity or every detail will remain unchanged.
- Open Adobe Firefly’s Anime Generator.
- Upload a photo you have the right to use.
- Choose Image to Image and describe the original illustration you want.
- Generate variations and compare the subject, framing, lighting, and overall treatment with the source.
- Refine the description and try again if the result does not fit your goal.
For example, adapt this prompt to your image: “Turn this photo into an original, hand-painted anime illustration. Keep the main subject and composition recognizable; use soft watercolor textures, warm natural light, gentle expressions, and a lush, storybook environment. Do not add existing characters, logos, or film scenes.” This is suggested prompt wording, not a tested prompt or a guaranteed result.

- Adjust Style Strength and the available color, lighting, or composition settings to suit your goal.
- Generate variations, compare them, and refine the description or settings.

Method 3: Use Midjourney Style Reference
Midjourney documents Style Reference as a way to apply visual qualities from an image, such as colors, medium, textures, and lighting, to a new generation. Its guidance is to describe the content you want and keep prompts simple. A style reference does not copy the people or objects shown in that image.
- Choose an image you have the right to use as a style reference.
- Describe the subject and scene you want to generate.
- Apply the image through Midjourney’s Style Reference workflow, following its current documentation.
- Generate variations and assess whether the visual treatment and composition suit your goal.
- Adjust the content description or reference approach and generate again if needed.
How to describe the look you want
Focus on observable visual qualities rather than asking a tool to reproduce a studio exactly. You might describe a hand-painted or anime-inspired illustration, soft watercolor-like textures, warm natural lighting, expressive simplified forms, and a richly detailed environment. This is practical prompt guidance, not a tested formula or a guarantee.

Those are Adobe’s claims about its service, not an independent guarantee or legal conclusion. “Ghibli-inspired” can be a reader’s shorthand for an aesthetic goal, but it should not imply that Studio Ghibli operates, endorses, or licenses a tool or result. Describe the visual qualities you want and aim for an original image. “Inspired by” does not itself remove legal risk.
