For six-strand embroidery floss, the basics are simple: cut a manageable length, separate strands one at a time, then recombine the number your pattern calls for. These tips help prevent tangles and make it easier to keep leftover thread identifiable.
1. Check what kind of thread you have
Strand separation applies to stranded floss, commonly six-strand cotton. Other embroidery threads—including pearl cotton, rayon, silk, metallic, ribbon and wool—may be designed to be used intact. Pearl cotton, in particular, is used from the ball or skein without separating it. The Embroiderers’ Guild of America’s beginner’s guide to embroidery floss describes these different thread types.

2. Follow the pattern’s strand count
If the pattern specifies how many strands to use, start there. When it does not, choose based on the fabric and the look you want: more strands generally make a stitch look heavier, while fewer make it finer. The Embroiderers’ Guild of America notes that one or two strands are typical in its beginner guidance, but the right count depends on the project.
Thread thickness and other properties can vary between manufacturers. The guild recommends using thread from the same manufacturer throughout a project for consistency.

3. Cut a manageable length
DMC recommends no more than 50 cm (18 inches) for a working length and suggests measuring from your fingertips to your elbow as a practical approximation. This is general guidance rather than a rule for every technique. DMC explains that long thread can wear, fray or get dirty as it is handled and passed through fabric repeatedly. 4. Find the skein end under the larger label
On a DMC skein, the larger label—the one with the barcode and shade number—is where DMC directs users to find the thread end. Draw out only the length you need, rather than pulling a long section free at once.

5. Separate strands one at a time
Hold the cut length loosely. Tease one strand away from the group, then draw that strand straight upward while allowing the remaining strands to hang. Pulling strands out individually helps keep the floss from twisting together. Repeat until you have separated the number needed.
6. If a strand resists, try the other end
The Embroiderers’ Guild of America suggests untwisting about an inch of thread to get separation started. If the strand catches or resists, try separating it from the opposite end instead.

7. Recombine the strands before threading
Once separated, bring the number of strands your pattern calls for back together as a group. Thread that bundle through the needle; do not assume that the full six-strand skein should be used just because it came that way.

Trim the thread for the needle
If the end is ragged, trim it with sharp scissors at a 45-degree angle. DMC recommends this angled cut to make the floss easier to pass through the needle’s eye.

Keep the shade number with the floss
When you finish stitching, keep the shade number with any unused floss so you can identify it later. Labeled bobbins are one option; cards or another container can also work. You can sort by shade number when matching a pattern or by color when choosing visually—the guild notes that there is no single right storage system. DMC’s UK store lists a 28-bobbin set with a 6 cm metal organiser ring as one example of a labeled option, not a requirement.
