Make a temporary seam guide by measuring from the needle to the seam allowance your project requires, then placing a raised strip of stacked masking tape at that distance. As you sew, keep the fabric’s raw edge against the tape. The guide gives the edge a physical reference; it does not replace checking that the seam is feeding straight.

Make a raised guide with masking tape

This method works when the machine’s marked lines do not show the seam allowance you need. AllPeopleQuilt’s tutorial describes positioning the tape with a ruler, then using its raised edge as a guide while sewing.

  1. Choose the seam allowance. Check the pattern or project instructions. Do not assume every project uses the same allowance.
  2. Position a ruler under the needle. Set it so the needle sits directly above the ruler mark for the required distance. Measure from the needle position, not from the edge of the presser foot.
  3. Set the tape. Lower the presser foot gently to hold the ruler in place. Align a small stack of masking tape against the ruler’s edge and press the tape onto the machine bed.
  4. Remove the ruler. The remaining tape forms a raised ledge at the measured distance from the needle.
  5. Sew with the fabric edge against the ledge. Keep the raw edge aligned with the tape as the machine feeds the fabric.

The steps follow the method in AllPeopleQuilt’s custom seam-guide tutorial, published October 18, 2018.

Check whether your machine already has a useful guide

Many machine beds have inch or metric seam markings. If a marked line matches the allowance you need and is easy to follow, use it rather than adding a physical guide. For a tape guide or a marked line, the important measurement is the distance from the needle to the edge reference.

Other household materials for a temporary barrier

Lego brick or stacked cardboard

Nicki LaFoille of National Sewing Circle demonstrates using a Lego brick or stacked pieces of cardboard as a raised barrier, secured to the machine bed with double-sided tape. Measure from the central needle position and place the barrier behind or ahead of the needle, depending on where you want to align the fabric. LaFoille describes the tape coming off without residue in her demonstration; that is not a guarantee for every adhesive or machine finish. See her DIY seam-guide demonstration.

Rubber band, elastic, or sticky notes

The American Sewing Guild describes stretching a rubber band or narrow elastic around the machine’s free arm, or attaching a pad of sticky notes to the machine base with its glued edge facing the needle. The guild recommends removable, non-marring tape such as painter’s tape when attaching a guide to the base. Before applying any adhesive, check the machine manual and test removability cautiously on an inconspicuous area; finishes and adhesives vary. Its overview of seam guides also discusses commercial options.

DIY tape or a purchased guide?

A DIY guide is useful when you need a particular distance and want a nonmagnetic, repositionable reference. Other guides differ in how they attach, adjust, and fit the machine.

Guide type How it works Fit or adjustment consideration
Stacked tape A removable raised edge on the machine bed Set it with a ruler at the required distance from the needle. Check the manual and test the adhesive cautiously.
Magnetic guide A raised edge that attaches magnetically to a compatible metal throat plate PFAFF says its guide attaches to a metal throat plate, should be positioned by measuring from the needle, and is not recommended for computerized machines. PRYM Consumer USA’s Dritz tutorial also cautions against magnetic guides on computerized machines. Follow your machine’s current manual.
Adhesive-backed or screw-in guide A fixed or adjustable reference attached to the machine Attachment method and repositioning depend on the product; screw-in guides require a compatible hole.
Presser-foot guide A guide associated with the presser foot The guide must fit the machine and foot.
Quilting guide arm An arm provides a reference for stitching at a set distance Its extension is finite, so it may not reach the distance you need.

Compatibility details for the magnetic option come from the PFAFF product page and PRYM Consumer USA’s Dritz seam-width gauge tutorial. Machine-specific advice can change, so consult the current manual for your model.
