Machine quilting with rulers works by guiding a purpose-made template along a compatible ruler foot while you move the quilt to stitch controlled lines and shapes. The method can be used on a domestic sewing machine, a sit-down longarm or a longarm, but the correct foot, template clearance and quilt support depend on the machine. Check your machine’s manual or ask its manufacturer before sewing.
1. Confirm your machine can use a ruler foot
Start with the machine, not the ruler. Ruler-work feet have raised sides or other clearance that lets the template edge guide the foot. A generic quilting foot is not automatically suitable. Check the manual for the exact foot approved for your make and model, or confirm compatibility with the manufacturer. Juki’s SM05 instructions put the check plainly: “Before you start, please make sure you have the correct foot on your machine to use templates (aka rulers).”
2. Use a template made for machine quilting
Choose machine-quilting rulers or templates, not an ordinary thin rotary-cutting ruler. A thin ruler can slip beneath the foot and into the needle path. The tutorials cited here recommend templates at least 1/4 inch thick, but that is tutorial guidance rather than a universal standard. Check the maximum template height and clearance allowed by your machine and foot before buying or sewing.

3. Match the template to the foot clearance
Template thickness, foot geometry and machine setup work together: the ruler must sit securely against the foot without being so tall that it interferes with it. Compare the template’s height and intended use with the limits in the machine or foot instructions. If compatibility is unclear, ask the machine maker rather than assuming that a ruler marketed for quilting will fit your setup.
#1 Best Overall
- Made in the USA with high quality acrylic and precision measurements ensuring accuracy for your quilting, sewing, patchwork, and crafting projects
- Creative Grids exclusive non-slip grip allows you to easily slide the quilting tool over the fabric until pressure is applied. Then, the grip holds the quilting tool in place, eliminating slipping while you quilt.
- Black and White dashed guide lines are visible on all fabric colors
- Easy to use. Simply install a ruler foot on your machine and quilt along your chosen edge of the template for endless design possibilities.
- Slim gives you a longer length and narrow width for stitching in the ditch, echoing crosshatching, stitching parallel line, creating geometric patterns, border designs, and more.
4. Set up support for your machine type
The quilt needs a stable, level surface so it can move smoothly without pulling or catching. The support differs by configuration:
- Domestic machine: provide a level, adequately sized work surface around the machine to support the quilt.
- Sit-down longarm: support the quilt on the table or surface specified for the machine, keeping the working area level.
- Moving longarm: check whether the manufacturer requires a compatible ruler base to support the template while you guide it.
Use only a base or extension designed to fit the specific machine; support accessories are not interchangeable by default.

- Made in the USA with high quality acrylic and precision measurements ensuring accuracy for your quilting, sewing, patchwork and crafting projects.
- Creative Grids exclusive Non-Slip Grip ensures your tool doesn’t slip while quilting
- Black and white dashed guidelines are visible on all fabric colors
- Easy to use. Simply install a ruler foot on your machine and quilt along your chosen edge of the template for endless design possibilities.
- Use Sid’s straight side to free-motion quilt straight lines. Not only does Sid have a nice long straight edge, but the needle stops on both sides ensure perfect spacing between the lines and accurate starting and stopping points when turning corners.
5. Keep the template edge against the foot
Place the ruler edge against the ruler foot and maintain that contact as you sew. Use controlled downward pressure to keep the template from shifting, while avoiding force that makes it difficult to move the quilt. The template guides the foot; it does not clamp the quilt in place.
6. Move the ruler and quilt together
Ruler work depends on coordinated motion: guide the template and move the quilt smoothly together as the machine stitches. Avoid jerking the ruler, forcing the fabric or trying to correct a line with a sudden movement. A steady pace and continuous contact between ruler and foot help keep the stitched path controlled.

- Create curves, straight lines, corners, clamshells and many other designs.
- Perfectly sized to fit comfortably in your hand.
- Hopping foot notch for outlining applique.
- Packaging includes instructions and design ideas.
7. Practise on a small quilt sandwich
Before working on a full quilt, make a small quilt sandwich from fabric, batting and backing. Practise moving the ruler and quilt together, keeping the template against the foot and stitching a few simple paths. This gives you room to learn the movement without committing to a large project.
8. Begin with straight lines and simple shapes
Machine-quilting rulers can guide straight lines, arcs and geometric motifs, and ruler work can be combined with free-motion designs. Start with a straight path or a simple geometric shape; add curves and more involved combinations once you can move the quilt and template smoothly.

- Use Smiley to quilt arcs, curved echoes, curved motifs with gentle arcs in two sizes, continuous curves, cables, and more.
9. Check settings in your machine manual
Feed-dog position and needle-stop settings vary by machine, so do not copy another model’s setup without checking yours. For example, Juki’s SM05 instructions call for lowering the feed dogs on a home machine and using needle-down stopping. Follow the instructions for your own model, including the correct foot, template clearance and any settings required for ruler work.
