Make a cardboard automaton by turning a hand crank that rotates a cam inside a sturdy box; the cam pushes a guided follower to move a figure above it. Start with one simple action, such as rising and falling, and test the mechanism before painting or decorating the scene.
What a cardboard automaton does
A cardboard automaton is a mechanical sculpture powered by a person turning a crank. The crank rotates a shaft, and a mechanism on that shaft moves a character or object in a repeating pattern. MIT’s K-12 Maker Lab describes automata or cam toys as machines that use hand-powered mechanisms to create cyclical motions animating a scene (MIT K-12 Maker Lab).

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →For a first build, use a cam and follower: the cam is an off-center or non-round piece fixed to the shaft; as it rotates, its changing outline pushes a follower. A guide constrains the follower so it moves in the intended direction rather than tipping or wandering.
Materials and tools
- A small cardboard box and extra cardboard for braces, the cam, crank, and figure.
- A wooden skewer or small dowel to serve as the rotating shaft.
- A drinking straw to guide the follower.
- Masking tape and glue; hot glue is one option used in some project guides, not a requirement.
- Scissors and, if needed, an age-appropriate tool for making shaft holes.
- Optional: craft foam for the cam or follower. Cardboard can be used instead. One Exploratorium guide also lists washers and nuts as optional weights.
MIT’s example uses cardboard, quarter-inch wood dowels, and plastic straws; laser cutting is optional, not necessary for a basic hand-built automaton (MIT K-12 Maker Lab). Use tools with age-appropriate supervision and follow the manufacturers’ directions, especially for craft knives, hole-making tools, and hot glue.

Build a simple rising-and-falling automaton
1. Plan one movement
Choose a small scene and decide what one character will do. A figure rising and falling is a manageable first motion because a cam can push a guided follower up and let it descend as the cam turns. Keep the first version to one moving part; you can add coordinated movements after the basic action works.
2. Make a rigid box frame
Use a small box as the housing. If it has flaps, remove or fold them as needed for your design. Maker Camp’s example reinforces the corners with glued cardboard triangles (Maker Camp). Keep the box reasonably square: a frame that twists can misalign the shaft and follower guide.

3. Cut the cam and follower
Cut an oval or other gently non-round cam from cardboard or foam. Make a hole near the center and fit the cam onto the shaft. The hole’s position and the cam’s outline affect how far the follower travels, so begin with a simple profile and test it rather than assuming a particular shape will produce a precise motion. Cut a smaller follower piece that can rest against the cam while connecting to the figure.
4. Install the shaft
Make aligned holes in opposite sides of the box and pass the skewer or dowel through them, with the cam inside. The shaft should be supported but rotate freely. Check that the cam clears the box walls and remains firmly attached to the shaft.

5. Add the follower guide
Make a hole in the top of the box and fit a straw through it. Arrange the follower so the straw keeps it moving up and down while its lower end contacts the cam. Secure the straw without squeezing it closed or pinching the follower.
6. Attach a crank and test
Outside the box, attach a small cardboard handle to the shaft. Turn it slowly by hand and watch the follower through a side opening or before closing the housing. Check for smooth movement through a full turn before attaching the figure.

7. Add the figure and finish the scene
Connect the figure to the follower, then decorate the box and character. The motion is part of the storytelling: decide what the repeated action expresses, and make the scene readable while it moves. MIT’s guidance emphasizes time for tinkering and tweaking as well as embellishing (MIT K-12 Maker Lab).
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose a mechanism to match the motion
A cam and follower is a straightforward choice for repeated up-and-down travel. Other mechanisms can create different actions. The Modern Automata Museum’s educational page lists crank sliders, crankshafts, eccentric and jumping cams, oscillating levers, ratchets, and friction wheels (Modern Automata Museum). MIT notes that one rotating shaft can carry multiple cams, each creating a different movement.

| Mechanism | Useful for | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Cam and follower | Repeated rising-and-falling or other follower motion | Needs a guide and consistent contact between cam and follower. |
| Crank slider | Reciprocating, back-and-forth movement | Allow room for the slider’s travel and its connections. |
| Oscillating lever | Rocking or back-and-forth angular movement | Provide a stable pivot and clearance for the lever. |
| Multiple cams on one shaft | Two or more actions timed together | Plan shaft spacing and movement timing; the mechanism takes more alignment and prototyping. |
These are design considerations, not controlled performance comparisons for cardboard builds. When choosing, consider the motion you want, available room, number of pivots and guides, ease of repositioning parts, and whether multiple actions need to happen in time with one another.
Troubleshoot the motion
- The follower catches or stops: Turn the crank slowly and inspect for a crooked shaft, a follower pinched by its straw guide, a rough cam edge, a loose cam, or a flexible frame. Correct one cause at a time.
- The follower does not stay against the cam: Check the fit and alignment so the follower can maintain contact as the cam turns without being trapped or forced sideways.
- The movement is too small: Reconsider the cam outline and the location of its shaft hole, then test again. Those choices affect the cam’s changing reach, but the project guides do not specify quantified motion profiles.
- The movement is too abrupt: Try a smoother cam outline and reduce unwanted friction or looseness in the moving parts.
- The crank is hard to turn: Check whether the shaft rubs against the box, the cam touches a wall, or the guide squeezes the follower. Reinforce frame joints if the box flexes out of alignment.
How long does it take?
Maker Camp estimates one or two hours for its project; that is an estimate for that guide, not a general or measured duration for every design (Maker Camp). The time for your build depends on its complexity and how much adjustment the mechanism needs.
