You can use ChatGPT Images 2.0 to turn a portrait, character sketch, or pet photo into a digital image of a boxed collectible figure. It does not create a physical toy, 3D model, mold, or 3D-printable file. For a convincing result, describe the subject, figure design, packaging, and details to preserve, then revise individual errors.
What you need
- A ChatGPT account.
- An optional reference image. A clear, well-lit front-facing or full-body photo is more useful than a blurry, filtered, heavily cropped, or obscured one.
- A short design brief covering the figure’s clothing, pose, accessories, packaging, color palette, and printed label.
ChatGPT accepts static PNG, JPEG/JPG, and non-animated GIF files. The per-image upload limit is 20 MB; video cannot be used as an image input.

If you are uploading somebody else’s photograph, get their permission and make sure you have the rights required to use it. You are responsible for having the necessary rights, licenses, and permissions for uploaded material.
Create the figure on the web
- Open ChatGPT.
- Start a regular conversation and describe the image, or choose More → Images.
- To use a reference photo, select the + button in the composer and choose Add photos & files. You can also drag an image into the text box or paste it from the clipboard.
- Enter the prompt below, replacing the bracketed details.
- Submit the request and inspect the complete package, especially the face, accessory count, and text.
Create it on iOS or Android
- Open a new chat.
- Open the composer’s tools menu and choose Create an image.
- Use the + attachment control to add a reference photo, if you have one.
- Paste the prompt and send it.
On current mobile versions, the former row of separate tool icons has been replaced by a sliders-style Skills menu. Select Create an image from that menu.
Use this action-figure prompt
Replace the bracketed details:
Create a polished product photo of a collectible action figure based on the uploaded reference photo.
The figure should clearly resemble the person in the reference image while remaining a stylized toy, not a real human. Show the full figure inside a premium transparent blister package mounted on a printed backing card. Use a three-quarter front view of the package, with the entire box visible and centered.

Use a cohesive “[COLOR PALETTE]” design, realistic molded plastic, clean retail packaging, subtle reflections on the clear blister, crisp studio lighting, believable toy proportions, and a high-end collectible-toy product-photography style.
Use only fictional branding. Make the printed labels legible and spell them exactly as provided. Do not add extra people, duplicate accessories, weapons, random logos, watermarks, or unrelated text. Use a vertical portrait composition with the complete package inside the frame.
This prompt separates the important visual decisions instead of hiding them in one paragraph. It specifies the subject, packaging, layout, accessories, text, lighting, and exclusions. ChatGPT Images can follow instructions for in-image text and aspect ratios, but small labels may still need correction.

Make the character look like the reference
Do not rely on “make it look like this person” alone. Add specific traits that should survive the toy stylization:
Preserve the reference subject’s hairstyle, hair color, face shape, skin tone, glasses, facial hair, and distinctive clothing details. Keep the person’s approximate age and body proportions consistent with the reference photo.
Use a larger, sharper image where possible. A face that is tiny, turned sharply away, hidden by sunglasses, covered by shadows, or affected by motion blur gives the model less reliable information.
For a fictional character or pet, describe the visual identity directly: fur or skin color, markings, costume, expression, body scale, ears, hairstyle, and any distinctive features.
Revise one problem at a time
When the first version is close, continue in the same conversation rather than starting over. A focused instruction helps preserve the successful parts of the image:
Keep the package design, character identity, pose, lighting, and camera angle unchanged. Replace only the accessories with: [LIST]. Do not change the face, outfit, or packaging text.
Rewrite the full prompt only if the image has drifted substantially. Otherwise, identify the single error—such as a wrong color, missing accessory, or altered pose—and ask for that correction.
Fix cropping and composition
Retail packaging is easy to crop because the model tends to fill the frame. Add this instruction when the top, bottom, or sides are missing:

Show the entire retail package, including the top, bottom, and both sides, with generous empty margin around it. Do not crop any part of the box.
You can also use the Aspect ratio control in the editor to regenerate the image in another format, or specify an aspect ratio in the prompt. A vertical portrait format is usually the safest choice for a tall blister pack.
Improve labels and packaging text
Even when the prompt says “spell it exactly,” small packaging copy can be misspelled, distorted, or replaced. Start with very little text and make it large:
Use only these two printed text elements:
Top label: “[NAME]”
Subtitle: “[SHORT TITLE]”
Make both labels large, centered, high-contrast, and easy to read. Do not add any other text.
Check the generated label at full size. If it is wrong, edit the image rather than assuming the lettering is correct:
Change only the text on the top label to “[NAME]”. Keep the face, clothing, accessories, package shape, colors, lighting, and camera angle unchanged.
For a complex package, generate the artwork with minimal text first and add or correct the wording in a separate edit.
Keep accessories from duplicating
Accessories are commonly repeated, merged, or placed in the figure’s hands. State the number and location explicitly:

Include exactly four accessories. Each must be in its own separate molded compartment on the right side of the package. Do not duplicate, merge, or place accessories in the figure’s hands.
If four objects still confuse the composition, begin with two. Once the package is stable, add the others through targeted edits. Small props, repeated patterns, and tiny compartments are more difficult for an image model than a simple figure silhouette.
Edit the generated image
Open the result to launch the editor. Its main controls include:
- Select: highlight the area you want to change.
- Aspect ratio: regenerate the image in another format.
- Undo and Redo: move through edits.
- Save: keep the finished version.
You can also describe an edit directly in the editor without selecting an area. Selection highlights are not exact, and an edit can affect nearby parts, so say what must remain unchanged. For example: Replace only the blue accessory with a paintbrush. Keep the figure’s hands, face, outfit, packaging, and lighting unchanged.

Generated images appear under Images. Open one and use the image controls to:
- Copy it to the clipboard.
- Save it to your device.
- Share it with another app.
The Images area also includes Create Image for starting another generation.
When Library is available on your account, uploaded reference files may be saved there separately from the conversation. Deleting the chat does not necessarily delete a file already saved to Library; remove it from Library itself if you no longer want it retained.

Use Temporary Chat for a private experiment
For a personal photo, start a new chat and select the pill-shaped Temporary button in the top-right corner before uploading it. Temporary Chats do not appear in history and are not used to improve models, although they may be retained for up to 30 days for safety purposes.
In a normal signed-in chat, you can turn off training use through Profile icon → Settings → Data Controls → Improve the model for everyone. Existing conversations remain in your history after this setting is disabled.
If ChatGPT refuses the request
A normal self-portrait action-figure request is different from a request for harmful, sexual, or deceptive imagery. ChatGPT Images 2.0 checks image inputs and generated outputs with image-safety systems, so a request may be blocked before generation or the result may be blocked afterward. Do not try to bypass a refusal by disguising the request.

ChatGPT Images 2.0 is available on all ChatGPT tiers, although Images with thinking is currently available on Plus, Pro, and Business. You do not need GPT-4o, ChatGPT Plus, or a separate DALL·E 3 workflow for this process. The official DALL·E GPT is scheduled for retirement on August 30, 2026; user-created GPTs with image generation enabled are not affected.

Can ChatGPT make a real action figure from my photo?
No. This workflow creates a digital image of a collectible figure in packaging. It does not create a physical toy, 3D mesh, mold, articulated model, or manufacturing file.
What kind of reference photo works best?
Use a clear, well-lit front-facing or full-body PNG, JPEG/JPG, or non-animated GIF. The file must be 20 MB or smaller. Avoid heavy filters, blur, tiny faces, sharp profile views, and faces hidden by shadows or objects.
Why is the name on the package misspelled?
Generated text is not always accurate, especially when it is small. Use fewer words, larger high-contrast labels, and a targeted edit that changes only the label while instructing the model to preserve the rest of the package.
Can I use another person’s photo?
Only when you have the person’s permission and the rights needed to upload and use the image. For a private experiment, Temporary Chat can keep the conversation out of history, but it does not replace the need for permission.
What should I do if ChatGPT refuses to generate the image?
Do not try to bypass the refusal by disguising the request. Image inputs and generated results are checked by safety systems, and some requests may be blocked.
