How to transfer and carve the pattern
- Pick the pumpkin first. Look for a firm pumpkin with a broad, relatively smooth front. A very ridged surface can distort a dog’s eyes and muzzle.
- Hollow and dry it. Remove the seeds and loose interior flesh, then scrape the wall behind the carving area thinner. Dry the outside before applying paper or tape.
- Resize the PDF. Print the stencil at its original size only if it fits. Use printer scaling or a photocopier to enlarge or reduce it. Long-eared or highly detailed designs need enough room to sit flat on the pumpkin.
- Tape the pattern in place. Keep the paper as smooth as possible. If it wrinkles over the curve, make small relief cuts in the paper rather than forcing the design out of proportion.
- Transfer the lines. Use a pin or transfer tool to make closely spaced pinpricks along the stencil lines. Remove the paper only after all important lines have been transferred.
- Separate cutting from etching. Solid lines indicate areas to cut completely through. Dotted or shaded areas are generally etched: scrape away only the orange skin to expose lighter flesh.
- Etch before cutting when possible. Removing the surface skin first makes it less likely that a narrow bridge or facial feature will break while you cut.
- Cut the major openings. Use a small serrated pumpkin saw or carving tool and work slowly. Preserve the bridges between the eyes, ears, muzzle, and surrounding sections.
- Clean the edges. Brush away scraps and check the image from several feet away. If the dog’s expression is unclear, deepen the etched shading rather than widening every cut.
- Light it safely. A battery-operated LED candle gives the design a steady glow without an exposed flame.
Three ways to get a different dog design
Use another free breed collection
The BHG set is a useful starting point, but it is not the only source. Woo! Jr.’s dog-breed printables include designs such as Basset Hound, Corgi, Frenchie, English Bulldog, English Mastiff, and “I Heart Rescues.” Large-breed patterns, particularly English Mastiff, need a pumpkin with a wide usable front.
Dremel’s Animal and Pet Pumpkin Stencils offers dog and puppy patterns marked “Difficulty: Medium.” These are presented within a collection designed around Dremel pumpkin-carving tools, so treat them as tool-oriented patterns rather than assuming every design is a beginner project.

Common mistakes that ruin dog stencils
- Cutting every marked area: A stencil is not a coloring page. Removing all the shaded sections can eliminate the bridges that hold the image together.
- Skipping the etched areas: A face may look blank if you cut only the solid lines and leave the dotted shading untouched.
- Using a wet pumpkin: Tape slips, paper wrinkles, and pinpricks become difficult to follow. Hollow and dry the pumpkin first.
- Printing without checking scale: A pattern that is too small loses detail; one that is too large may wrap around the sides. Resize it before transferring.
- Choosing too small a pumpkin: Detailed breeds and long-eared dogs need a broad, smooth surface. Compare the printed pattern with the pumpkin before taping it down.
- Leaving pets beside the tools: Keep dogs indoors or in a secure area with water and a familiar toy while you carve. Pumpkin saws, pins, and scraps are not safe dog toys.

What do dotted lines mean on a pumpkin stencil?
Dotted or shaded areas are etched areas: scrape away the pumpkin’s outer skin without cutting all the way through. Solid lines normally indicate sections to cut through.
