The best free drawing software in 2026 depends on what you draw. For digital painting, Krita is the strongest all-round choice. Inkscape is better for logos and SVG artwork, GIMP for image editing and compositing, and Adobe Fresco for touch-first drawing on an iPad or Windows device.

The official website version is free, open source, and licensed under GPLv3. You do not need to register an account or stay online to use it. Artwork made with Krita belongs to the artist, and commercial use is permitted. The Microsoft Store and Steam versions cost money, but they are functionally equivalent paid distribution channels that support development.

Krita also includes a timeline, animation docker, onion skinning, and export options for movies and GIFs. It can use vector layers and import SVG files, although its main strength remains raster painting.

Inkscape is the free choice when your artwork needs to remain sharp at any size. It creates vector paths rather than relying mainly on pixels, making it suitable for logos, icons, diagrams, lettering, technical illustrations, and SVG artwork.

Because vector objects are defined by curves and points, you can enlarge an Inkscape logo for a poster or reduce it for a website icon without the soft edges associated with enlarging a raster image. It also provides tools for node editing, path operations, gradients, shapes, text, and object alignment.

Inkscape is free and open source under the GPL. Its current stable release is Inkscape 1.4.4, released May 6, 2026. That update includes crash fixes, more than 25 other bug fixes, performance improvements, a new palette, a star and polygon orientation control, updated translations, and Windows-on-Arm installers.

Inkscape is not a natural-media painting application. It can produce expressive artwork, but users looking for textured brushes, painterly blending, or frame-by-frame raster animation will generally have an easier time in Krita.

Choose Inkscape if: you are making a logo, icon set, diagram, font-based design, or any illustration that must be delivered as SVG.

3. GIMP — best for photo editing combined with drawing

GIMP is the strongest option here for artists who need drawing tools alongside image editing. It is useful for cleaning scanned artwork, removing backgrounds, building composites, creating textures, retouching photographs, and painting over existing images.

Its toolbox includes pencil, paintbrush, airbrush, ink, MyPaint Brush, eraser, smudge, clone, heal, gradient, path, text, and transformation tools. The layer and selection workflow will feel familiar to users coming from Photoshop, although GIMP is a general image editor rather than a painting-first application.

The current stable release is GIMP 3.2.4, released April 17, 2026. It supports current 64-bit Windows systems, macOS 11 Big Sur or newer, and Linux through AppImage, Flatpak, or Snap packages. Windows 10 users should use the official installer.

To create a custom GIMP brush, make the brush image, select File → Export As…, and export it with the .gbr extension. Then refresh the Brushes dialog. Brush folders can be managed through the brush-folder settings in Preferences.

There is an important Windows packaging issue. The Microsoft Store version previously had problems preserving plug-ins, themes, brushes, settings, and other add-ons during MSIX updates. The corrected Store package requires Windows build 10.0.20348.0 or newer, which means Windows 11 or Windows Server 2022. On Windows 10, the official installer is the safer route.

Choose GIMP if: your drawing workflow includes photographs, scans, selections, compositing, or extensive image correction.

4. Adobe Fresco — best for touch and Apple Pencil drawing

Adobe Fresco is designed around drawing with a finger or stylus. It is a particularly natural fit for iPad and Apple Pencil users, while also being available on iPhone and Windows devices.

Adobe’s free offering includes unlimited layers, raster brushes, vector brushes, live brushes, animation tools, and motion presets. Brush options include realistic wet-media behaviour as well as conventional pixel brushes. Fresco can also fit into workflows that continue in Photoshop or Illustrator, although those desktop Adobe applications remain separate paid products.

To add brushes, open the Pixel brushes panel, select Add Brushes, and choose either Discover new brushes or Import from files.

Fresco’s main drawback is platform and feature variation. Adobe maintains a support matrix covering iPad, iPhone, Intel/AMD Windows hardware, and ARM Windows hardware. Check that matrix before installing it on a particular Windows tablet or ARM device; support is not identical across every configuration.

Choose Fresco if: you draw primarily on a touchscreen and want a quick route between sketching, natural-media brushes, and simple animation.

5. FireAlpaca — best lightweight desktop drawing app

FireAlpaca is a simpler and less demanding alternative to Krita. It is well suited to line art, manga, basic illustration, and artists working on modest hardware who do not need a large professional interface.

FireAlpaca 2.16.0 was released for Windows, macOS, and Linux in June 2026. The Windows edition supports Windows 10 or later on 64-bit systems; the macOS edition requires macOS 12 or later. The Linux download supports distributions including Ubuntu 23.04+, Fedora 36+, and Debian 12+.

The 2.16.0 update added Free Transform directly to the Selection menu, more Auto Select modes, adjustable movement amounts for the Move tool’s one-pixel mode, and a shortcut for adding a layer below the active layer. On Windows, hold Shift while clicking Add Layer; on macOS, hold Ctrl.

FireAlpaca permits commercial use of artwork created in the program, and the artist owns the copyright to that artwork. Be careful when comparing editions: FireAlpaca SE includes features such as no advertising and exclusive brushes that are not part of the standard edition.

Choose FireAlpaca if: you want a fast, approachable desktop program for illustration or manga without Krita’s larger feature set.

6. MediBang Paint — best for manga, comics and screentones

MediBang Paint is built around comic production. Its useful features include panel-oriented workflows, customizable brushes, scan and import tools, group projects, cloud storage, more than 180 brushes, and more than 1,000 screentones.

The app runs on Windows 10+, macOS 11 Big Sur+, iPad, iPhone, and Android. The base application can draw offline; an internet connection is mainly needed for cloud features. Free users receive 3 GB of cloud storage.

It is not accurate to describe every MediBang feature as permanently free. Premium adds storage, extra brushes and materials, fonts, filters, version history, and other functions. Cloud files can also become inaccessible when Premium access ends. MediBang’s FAQ says that users may need a one-week mobile-store trial to access and move work off the cloud in that situation.

Feature availability is not identical between desktop, iPad, iPhone, and Android. Keep an offline copy of important work rather than treating the cloud as your only archive.

Choose MediBang Paint if: you make manga or comics and specifically need screentones, panels, cross-device access, or collaborative features.

7. Sketchbook — best clean interface for beginners

Sketchbook has one of the least intimidating interfaces in this group. It provides customizable brushes, layers, blend modes, rulers, curved rulers, ellipse and French-curve tools, predictive stroke smoothing, and dynamic symmetry without presenting the density of a larger desktop suite.

The mobile app is free on Android and iOS. Sketchbook Pro for Windows and macOS is paid, distributed through the Microsoft Store and Mac App Store. Current listed versions include Windows 9.4.7, macOS 9.4.13, Android 6.2.6, and iOS 6.2.8.

On Windows, change the interface language through Menu → Edit → Preferences → General → Language.

Take storage seriously when reinstalling. On iOS, uninstalling and reinstalling Sketchbook deletes saved artwork unless it is restored from a device backup. Android files are generally recoverable, but brush customizations, preferences, gallery organization, and unsaved work may be lost. Windows resets preferences, while macOS normally preserves artwork and preferences.

Choose Sketchbook if: you are learning to draw, want a clean sketching environment, and are using a mobile device—or are willing to pay for the desktop edition.

The trade-off is complexity. Blender’s 3D viewport, object hierarchy, camera system, materials, timeline, and animation workflow are unnecessary overhead for a normal still illustration. It is powerful, but Krita or FireAlpaca will get you drawing faster.

Choose Blender Grease Pencil if: animation, camera movement, or 2D/3D integration matters more than a quick still-image painting workflow.
