The right app depends on the kind of work you want to make. A manga app needs screentones and page management; a painting app needs responsive brushes and a sensible layer system; a technical sketching app benefits from vector strokes and an infinite canvas. The apps also differ in pricing, export behavior, device support, and cloud storage.

1. ibis Paint X: best overall free option

ibis Paint X is a strong starting point if you want one Android app for illustration, anime-style work, lettering, manga, and casual experimentation. Its Google Play listing reports more than 47,000 brushes, 27,000 materials, 2,100 fonts, 84 filters, 46 screentones, 27 blending modes, rulers, clipping masks, vector tools, stroke stabilization, animation, and AI Disturbance.

That breadth is the main attraction. You can begin with a pencil sketch, use stabilization for cleaner line art, add screentones for comics, and finish with lettering without switching applications. The interface and large library can feel overwhelming, particularly on a phone.

The free app is ibis Paint X, and it includes advertising. The separately listed paid Android app is ibisPaint. Premium membership is listed at $2.99 per month or $27.99 per year, though Google Play pricing can vary by country. The free version allows unlimited drawing time, but selected features are restricted. For example, the Vector tool is limited to one hour per day, and importing original brush patterns is limited to five times without Premium.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Useful ibisPaint paths

  1. For stabilization, tap [Stabilizer tool] in the upper-right toolbar and adjust the Stabilizer slider.
  2. For a normal image export, open the canvas and choose [Back] → [Save Image], select the file type, then tap [OK].
  3. For a layered PSD, go to [My Gallery], select the artwork, tap the [Share button], choose [Image (PNG/JPEG/PSD)], and enable [Preserve Layers].

That last step matters. Exporting a PSD from the canvas does not necessarily preserve the layer structure. Use the gallery workflow and explicitly turn on Preserve Layers before sending the file to Photoshop or another editor.

2. Infinite Painter: best for natural-looking painting

Infinite Painter is a strong choice when brush behavior matters more than an enormous collection of comic assets. Its focused interface and natural-looking brushes make it well suited to digital painting, concept art, studies, and textured work. Version 7 requires Android 9 or later and runs on phones, tablets, and compatible Chromebooks.

The free mode has no advertisements or watermark and includes built-in brushes, brush editing, solid fill, lasso selection, basic transform, symmetry, seamless pattern projects, and smart shape detection. The important limits are a canvas capped at the device’s screen resolution and a maximum of three layers.

Pro is a one-time purchase, not a subscription. The first installation includes a one-week trial of Pro features; after that, the app returns to Free mode unless you buy Pro. The license is tied to the Google account used for the purchase and works on that account’s supported Android devices.

ChaoQ Stylus Pen for Touchscreen, 3pcs Stylus Pen for iPad iPhone Android
  • Stylus Pen for Touchscreen: No Bluetooth or charging needed—use instantly on any capacitive touch screen (iPad, iPhone, Android, Samsung). Dual rubber tips (5mm/6.6mm) ensure precise control for writing, drawing, or gaming. Lightweight aluminum body with vibrant colors.
  • Precision & Comfort Redefined: High sensitivity rubber tip glides smoothly without lag or scratches. Ergonomic design reduces wrist strain for extended use. Compatible with tablets, phones, and Laptops.
  • Dual-Tip Flexibility: Switch between 0.20” and 0.26” rubber nibs for detailed art or bold notes. Anti-scratch, fingerprint-resistant tip. Pretty bright metal colors inspire creativity.
  • Effortless Multi-Device Compatibility: Works seamlessly on Apple, Samsung, Android, and more. No apps or setup—just pick up and write. Perfect for notes, games, or gifts—ready to spark ideas instantly. Replaceable tips included for long-term use.
  • Creative Freedom, Anywhere: Lightweight aluminum stylus with natural grip. Includes 6 replaceable tips and 3 color stylus pens. Perfect for sharing with friends, family, or colleagues, this bundle ensures you’re always equipped to capture inspiration.

Do not treat Infinite Painter as automatically backed up. Projects are stored locally. On Android 11 and later, uninstalling the app can delete its app data and artwork, so export important work before changing phones or removing the app.

Exporting from Infinite Painter

Open a project and choose [Options menu] → [Export]. Available formats include JPG, PNG, WebP, PSD, ZIP, and PNTR. On Android 10 and later, image exports are placed in Pictures/Infinite Painter; PSD and ZIP exports go to Documents/Infinite Painter.

PSD is useful for moving work to another program, but it may alter or discard Infinite Painter-specific features, especially textures from the Paper layer. Keep a PNTR copy when you expect to reopen the project in Infinite Painter.

3. Sketchbook: best clean interface for beginners

Sketchbook is an approachable option for quick sketches, thumbnails, visual notes, and learning the basics of layers and blending modes. Its interface is relatively uncluttered, while still offering customizable pencils, markers, airbrushes, smear tools, guides, rulers, stroke tools, and layers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It works on phones and tablets, although the usable workspace and practical layer capacity depend on the device. A small phone can run it, but a larger screen makes drawing and navigating layers more comfortable.

Look for the official Play Store app published by Sketchbook, with package ID com.adsk.sketchbook. The current listing reports more than 100 million downloads and an Editors’ Choice designation. The app is free with in-app purchases. Be wary of similarly named apps from unrelated developers; “Autodesk SketchBook” is an outdated way to identify the current Android listing.

4. Krita: best free desktop-class option for Android tablets

Krita has an ambitious feature set, including advanced brush engines, freehand stabilizers, assistants, canvas-only mode, clone layers, layer styles, filter and transform masks, PSD support, animation with onion skinning, storyboarding, comic management, Python scripting, and color-managed workflows.

However, Krita’s Android release is beta, and its current Google Play listing says it is not suitable for real work yet. It is designed for large-screen devices such as tablets and Chromebooks and is not available for phones. On some tablets, menus and dialogs may be oversized, clipped, or awkward to navigate, particularly on unusual screen resolutions.

Stylus Pens for Touch Screens,Stylus Pen Universal Touch Screen Pens(2pcs)
  • The round head of the stylus is made of silicone, which is used for mobile phones and tablets.
  • The stylus pen tip is made of hard plastic, which can only be used for resistive screens such as GPS and navigator.
  • The round head and pointed head of the stylus are compatible with all the capacitive and resistive screens at present.
  • SILICONE ROUND HEAD, FOR MODERN DEVICES: The soft, conductive silicone round head is designed specifically for all capacitive touch screens, including iPad, iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, Android tablets/smartphones, and other similar devices. Perfect for scrolling, tapping, and general navigation.
  • PLASTIC TIP, FOR SPECIFIC RESISTIVE SCREENS ONLY (PLEASE NOTE): The fine plastic tip is ONLY compatible with older resistive touch screens, such as those found on some GPS devices, Nintendo DS/3DS, and certain POS machines. It will NOT work on capacitive screens like iPhones, iPads, or modern smartphones/tablets.

Consider Krita only if you want to test an advanced free app on a large Android tablet or Chromebook and are comfortable with beta software. It is not a dependable general recommendation for finished work or small phones. The current listing notes fixes for text tools, the Selection Action Panel, and background resource copying intended to prevent a common startup crash, but the Android build remains beta.

5. Concepts: best for vector sketching and infinite canvases

Concepts is for drawing that needs to remain editable and scalable. Its strokes are vector-based rather than merely fixed raster pixels, making it a better fit for product design, architecture, diagrams, mind maps, storyboards, visual notes, and planning than for heavily textured painting.

The workspace provides an infinite canvas, editable strokes, infinite layers, adjustable opacity, shape guides, live snapping, measurement tools, custom grids, and HSL, RGB, and COPIC color controls. Exports can include images, PDF, and vector formats.

The free version includes an infinite canvas, unlimited drawings, JPG export, and five layers. A one-time Essentials purchase adds selection and editing tools, infinite layers, shape guides, custom grids, and PNG, PSD, SVG, and DXF export. A subscription adds wider libraries and services across Android, ChromeOS, iOS, and Windows, and the developer advertises a seven-day Premium trial.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To create a drawing, open the gallery and tap the [+] button. Choose Concepts when you need to revise a line, resize a shape, or export a diagram—not when you want a traditional raster painting workflow with complex textured brushes.

6. MediBang Paint: best for manga and comics on a budget

MediBang Paint is built around comic production rather than general-purpose painting. It supports Android 8.0 and later and includes more than 50 brushes, customizable brush settings, comic tones and backgrounds, free fonts, page reordering, and tools for multi-page work. It can export MDP, PNG, JPG, and PSD files.

Its major advantage is the cloud workflow. With a free MediBang account and an internet connection, you can synchronize artwork, brushes, color palettes, and downloaded materials between Android, computers, and other supported devices. Cloud tools also support manga projects, multipage files, and group collaboration.

Offline drawing is possible, but the app’s most distinctive features are not entirely offline. Cloud saving, cloud materials, and cloud text require internet access. If you are working on a long comic while travelling, confirm that current files are available locally and export a separate backup rather than relying on an account connection you cannot test.

Bopomofo Stylus(5 Pcs),2-in-1 Stylus Pen for Touchscreen,Capacitive Stylus
  • 【Stylus for Touch Screen】This stylus can be used on touch screen, designed to replace your fingers, the stylus can free up your fingers and provide higher sensitivity and response on the screen.
  • 【Capacitive stylus】This is a capacitive stylus (battery-free, requires no charging, and functions like a fingertip)—not an active stylus. It does not support pressure sensitivity or palm rejection. However, it allows for tapping, scrolling, note-taking, and drawing on touchscreens; if you require professional-grade drawing capabilities on an iPad, please choose an active stylus instead.
  • 【2-in-1 Stylus Pen】This stylus features two different tips: a flexible transparent disc tip and a rubber tip. Applying moderate pressure when using the rubber tip ensures full contact with the screen—especially on screens with protective films—thereby enabling stable signal transmission. The combination of the rubber tip and the disc tip offers two distinct touch experiences. Please note that the plastic piece on the transparent disc is an integral part of the tip and cannot be removed.
  • 【Works On Capacitive Touch Screens】Compatible with iPad, iPad Air/mini, iPhone, Samsung Galaxy Tab, Android tablets, Kindle and smartphones. Also works over most screen protectors — glide, no scratch. The stylus is used to replace your fingers on a touchscreen, Avoid rubbing your fingers and leaving fingerprints on touchscreen devices. If it cannot be used for writing on some devices, This may be due to limitations in the settings of touchscreen devices. If you cannot find a solution, please contact us at any time, and we will help you resolve the issue.
  • 【Multiple Usage Scenarios】Whether you are taking notes in class, reviewing documents at work, drawing creative designs, or enjoying mobile games, this universal stylus pen delivers a smooth and comfortable touch experience. It is ideal for writing, sketching, annotating, scrolling, and precise screen control on tablets and smartphones. From daily tasks to creative projects, this stylus helps you capture ideas anytime and anywhere.

7. Clip Studio Paint: best for professional comics and animation

Clip Studio Paint is the most capable option here for serious manga, webtoons, comics, and animation. Its Android workflow includes comic panels, vector lines, 3D pose and reference assets, animation, and multi-page production. Those tools come with a steeper learning curve than the simpler sketching apps.

The pricing model is the key distinction. Android and Galaxy versions require a monthly usage plan; there is no perpetual Android license. A perpetual desktop purchase does not automatically activate the Android version. Eligible smartphone use includes 30 hours of free use per month, with the timer resetting on the first day of each month at 4 a.m. Japan Standard Time. Continued use requires the relevant subscription.

Clip Studio Paint makes sense if you already use its ecosystem or need its professional comic and animation tools. It is excessive for occasional doodling, and downloading large material libraries can consume storage and affect performance on phones or lower-memory tablets.

8. ArtFlow: best lightweight Android-native painting app

ArtFlow is a practical choice when you want conventional raster painting without a desktop-style interface. It is designed as an Android sketchbook and art studio, rather than as a port of a computer application, and supports pressure-sensitive pens including Samsung’s S Pen on compatible hardware.

A single license purchase activates the app on devices associated with the same Google account. That makes it appealing to artists who prefer a straightforward purchase instead of Clip Studio Paint’s Android subscription or Krita’s more demanding tablet interface.

Performance still depends on the device. Large canvases, many layers, limited RAM, and weaker stylus hardware can affect responsiveness in any Android painting app, including ArtFlow. Check compatibility before starting a large illustration or buying specifically for an older phone.

9. PENUP: best for Samsung S Pen users and guided drawing

PENUP is less a professional painting studio than a drawing practice and sharing platform. It is particularly useful on Galaxy phones and tablets for coloring, tracing, guided lessons, templates, Live Drawing tutorials, challenges, and community artwork.

On a blank or coloring canvas, open the brush tools at the top, choose a brush, and adjust its settings. The canvas toolbar includes Eraser, Fill color, Undo, Redo, Layer, Selection mode, Transform, and More options. Selection mode provides Lasso, Rectangle, and Circle selections.

How to choose among them

  1. Choose the medium first. For textured raster painting, start with Infinite Painter or ArtFlow. For line-heavy illustration and manga, consider ibis Paint X or MediBang Paint. For vector layouts and diagrams, use Concepts.
  2. Match the app to your screen. Krita is for large tablets and Chromebooks, not phones, and its Android build is beta and not suitable for real work yet according to its listing. A tablet also gives every layer-based app more room for palettes and toolbars.
  3. Check the payment model. ibis Paint X is free with ads and feature restrictions, Infinite Painter Pro is a one-time purchase, Concepts has both one-time and subscription unlocks, and Clip Studio Paint requires a subscription on Android for continued use.
  4. Test export before committing. If your workflow depends on layers, export a small PSD and open it in the destination app. In ibisPaint, enable Preserve Layers from the gallery export screen.
  5. Back up local projects. Infinite Painter does not automatically back up artwork. MediBang’s cloud features require an account and internet access. Neither should replace an independent copy of important work.

FAQ

What is the best free drawing app on Android?

ibis Paint X is the best general free option for most Android users because it combines illustration tools, stabilization, layers, lettering, screentones, and a very large brush and material library. It contains ads and restricts some features. Krita is free and has advanced tools for tablets and Chromebooks, but its Android release is beta and its listing says it is not suitable for real work yet.

Which Android drawing app is best for an S Pen?

PENUP is the easiest choice for guided drawing, coloring, tracing, and Samsung-focused stylus practice. ArtFlow also supports pressure-sensitive pens for conventional painting, while ibis Paint X, Infinite Painter, Sketchbook, and other full drawing apps can be better for finished illustrations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Infinite Painter back up artwork automatically?

No. Infinite Painter stores projects locally and does not automatically back them up to the cloud. Export important projects manually, especially before uninstalling the app or moving to another device. PNTR is the safest format for reopening a project in Infinite Painter.

Can Android drawing apps export layered PSD files?

Several can, including ibis Paint X, Infinite Painter, Concepts, MediBang Paint, and Clip Studio Paint, but compatibility is not identical. In ibis Paint X, use My Gallery’s PSD export and enable Preserve Layers. Infinite Painter warns that some app-specific features, such as Paper-layer textures, may not survive a PSD export.

The Bottom Line

For most people, start with ibis Paint X if you want the broadest free toolkit, or Infinite Painter if natural brush response is more important than comic assets. Choose Sketchbook for a calmer beginner workspace and Concepts for editable vector sketches. Consider Krita only to test its beta Android build on a large tablet or Chromebook, not for real work yet. Manga artists should compare MediBang Paint with Clip Studio Paint: the former is cloud-friendly, while the latter is more professional but subscription-only on Android.
