For most painters, Snapseed is the best free Android photo editor for careful everyday corrections; Lightroom is better for RAW files and repeatable edits, while Canva is best for designed social posts. Choose based on whether you need faithful artwork colors, quick retouching, or a finished graphic—and check feature and subscription availability on your device.
This guide is about apps under the 2025 title, but app features and interfaces can change. Current feature details below reflect the research desk’s August 2026 checks; later additions should not be assumed to have been available throughout 2025.
One warning applies throughout: AI tools, premium features, and device support vary. An app listing that says a feature exists does not necessarily mean it is free or available on every Android phone.

| Google Photos | Quick crops, markup, corrections, and removing small distractions | Some tools depend on Android version, RAM, region, storage, or device model |
1. Snapseed: best free photo editor
Snapseed is the easiest recommendation if you want a capable editor without ads, subscriptions, in-app purchases, or export watermarks. Google Play lists more than 30 tools and filters, including Curves, Selective adjustments, Healing, Perspective, Brush, and RAW development. The current listing also describes smart masking, batch editing, and non-destructive editing.
That combination is useful for painting. You can correct a photograph that is slightly too warm under indoor lighting, pull back clipped highlights on white paper, straighten a canvas, and adjust the wall or background without applying the same correction to the artwork.
The current Google Play listing identifies Snapseed 4.1 and expanded RAW support for formats including DNG, ARW, RAF, NEF, CR3, ORF, and PEF. That is a later change, not a feature to assume was available throughout 2025.
A reliable Snapseed export workflow
- Open the image and make the corrections.
- Tap EXPORT.
- Choose Save to preserve the editable Snapseed stack on the original image.
- Choose Save a copy for a JPEG duplicate that retains the edit information.
- Choose Export when you need a flattened JPEG for Instagram, a messaging app, a website, or another editor.
Some third-party apps cannot interpret Snapseed’s edit stack, so an image saved with Save or Save a copy may appear unedited elsewhere. If a corrected painting looks unchanged when you attach it to a post, use EXPORT → Export. Google’s Snapseed export instructions explain these save options.
Choose Snapseed if: you want a genuinely free editor and do not need a cloud-based desktop workflow.
2. Adobe Lightroom: best for serious mobile photography
Lightroom is the better long-term choice when photographing many paintings, working with RAW files, or trying to make a whole series look consistent. Its adjustment controls are extensive, and presets can make repeated corrections faster.

- Your photos look flat and lifeless — add depth, vibrancy, and expression in no time
- You want to edit many images quickly — apply changes to an entire series of photos at once
- Mistakes like red eyes, blemishes, or unwanted objects ruin your pictures — AI-powered retouching tools enable flawless images
- You want to create creative projects — Photo Suite offers comprehensive features for collages, text and clipart integration, as well as print templates
- For Windows 11, 10
For example, you might create one starting treatment for paintings photographed in your studio, then refine exposure and white balance image by image. That is more dependable than applying a dramatic filter to every photograph.
Useful Lightroom tools on Android
- Masking: Open a photo, tap Masking → Add, then select a tool under Create new Mask. Options include Select Subject, Select Sky, Select Background, Brush, Linear Gradient, Radial Gradient, Color Range, Luminance Range, and Depth Range. Depth Range is available only for photos that contain depth information. See Adobe’s Android masking instructions.
- Remove: Open the photo and choose Edit → Remove. Lightroom provides Remove, Clone, and Heal options for marks, cables, dust, or small objects. Generative Remove requires an internet connection; standard Remove, Clone, and Heal can work offline.
- Export: Choose Share → Export as… to select format and output settings. Available formats include JPG, AVIF, DNG, TIF, and Original.
Export settings include dimensions, quality, color space, sharpening, metadata, location information, file naming, and watermarking. For an ordinary online painting post, JPG is usually sufficient. Keep an original or high-quality export separately if the image may later be printed. Adobe’s Android save and export instructions give the current options.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf export fails, Adobe identifies three common causes: the phone is offline, storage is full, or Lightroom does not have permission to save to the Gallery. Correct the problem and tap Retry.
Choose Lightroom if: you photograph paintings in RAW, already use Lightroom on desktop or the web, or need accurate local adjustments more than one-tap effects. Lightroom is free to download, but advanced features and cloud workflows may require an Adobe subscription.
3. Photoshop Express: best for quick retouching and collages
Photoshop Express is aimed at speed and presentation rather than a full professional layer-based workflow. It suits a painter who needs to remove a blemish from a portrait, clean a small mark, make a collage, or add text to a social post.
Adobe’s current Android listing includes blemish removal, spot healing, clone stamp, red-eye correction, background replacement, object removal, blur, dehaze, makeup tools, hair-color changes, stickers, text, and collage tools. Adobe lists support for RAW, TIFF, and PNG files in addition to common image formats. Not every listed feature is necessarily free.

- Edit and Share digital photos and other images
- Improve photo quality, adjust the color balance, crop, rotate, resize, and more
- Add text, frames, clipart, and more to your photos
- Fun filters such as, sepia, oil paint, cartoon and more.
- Use touch-up tools to remove red-eye and blemishes
Do not confuse Photoshop Express with Adobe’s separate Photoshop: Photo Editor Android app. Photoshop Express is not Photoshop with the same desktop layer workflow, and Photoshop Mix is discontinued. Adobe says Photoshop Express Premium unlocks additional features and more precise controls.
To control branding, open the menu or settings icon and go to Preferences → Watermark. On Android you can choose an image or text watermark, then change its position, size, and opacity. Adobe’s watermark instructions give the current steps.
Choose Photoshop Express if: your finished image needs quick cleanup or a collage, rather than careful color matching across a body of work.
4. Canva: best for social posts and painting graphics
Canva is the strongest option when the photograph is only one part of the finished design. It handles Instagram posts, exhibition announcements, class flyers, price lists, YouTube thumbnails, mood boards, and collages more naturally than traditional photo editors.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Google Play lists free tools such as crop, flip, brightness, contrast, saturation, blur, Auto Focus, filters, text, grids, and collages, as well as exports without ads or watermarks. Canva’s templates and typography tools are the main reasons to choose it—not detailed photographic control.
Canva’s feature labels and official help distinguish free tools from premium ones. Magic Edit, Magic Eraser, and Background Remover are premium features; do not assume a tool is included in the free plan just because it appears in the app. Canva’s AI photo-editing information explains the premium boundary. A mobile limitation: its official instructions say the Erase and Restore brushes are available on Canva.com and the desktop app, not in the mobile editor.

- Create stunning photos and videos with powerful AI tools, intuitive editing, and eye-catching effects.
- Enhanced Screen Recording - Capture screen & webcam together, export as separate clips, and adjust placement in your final project.
- AI Object Mask - Auto-detect & mask any object, even in complex scenes, to highlight elements and add stunning effects.
- AI Object Removal with Object Detection - Clean up photos fast with AI that detects and removes distractions automatically.
- AI Image Enhancer with Face Retouch - Clearer, sharper photos with AI denoising, deblurring, and face retouching.
Choose Canva if: you need to combine a painting photograph with a title, date, price, logo, border, or several supporting images.
5. VSCO: best for restrained film-style looks
VSCO is useful when you want a photographic mood rather than a neutral documentation image. Google Play lists 16 popular filters free of charge. Membership adds more than 200 presets and advanced tools such as HSL, Grain, and Dodge & Burn, along with creator-focused community features.

It is less suitable for a catalogue photograph where the paint must match the original canvas. A film preset can shift the hue of a blue, dull a bright yellow, or add grain that obscures brush texture.
The Google Play listing advertises a seven-day free trial and says the annual subscription begins automatically afterward unless canceled. Check the current subscription terms before starting a trial. Treat VSCO as a style and sharing app, not the first choice for accurate artwork reproduction.
Choose VSCO if: the image is about mood, process, or personal visual identity, and you are comfortable checking the subscription terms.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Google Photos: best built-in option
If you need a correction immediately, Google Photos may already be enough. Open a photo and tap Edit. The editor groups tools under Markup, Filters, Crop, Adjust, and Actions.
Best Value
- Make your photos look better than ever with Lightroom (desktop, mobile, and web), and Lightroom Classic (desktop).
- Quick Actions instantly give you suggestions tailored to your photo so you can get the look you want.
- Remove anything in a click. Make distractions vanish with Generative Remove, powered by Adobe Firefly generative AI.
- Edit Lightroom images in Firefly using simple prompts and create stunning videos directly with images.
- Quickly improve image quality using generative upscale with Topaz Gigapixel, now including powerful 4x upscaling.
Crop includes Straighten, Rotate, Perspective, Auto frame, Aspect ratio, and Mirror. Perspective correction can help when a painting was photographed from slightly above or below. Markup can annotate a reference image, though it is not a replacement for a proper painting-planning app.
For object removal, use Edit → Search and type “Magic Eraser,” or use Edit → Actions → Magic Eraser. Tap, circle, or brush over the unwanted object, then choose Erase → Done. Save a duplicate with the checkmark followed by Save as copy. Google’s Android editing instructions describe these tools.
Availability is inconsistent. Some tools download separately and require data or Wi-Fi and free storage; Google says devices with less than 1GB of available storage may be unable to download some tools. Some suggested edits require Android 8.0 or later and at least 3GB of RAM; certain Portrait Light and Unblur improvements require at least 4GB, and some features remain Pixel-only. Features also vary by region and installed editing modules.
Choose Google Photos if: you need a crop, straighten, markup, or small removal and do not want another editing system.

- Start with Snapseed if you want free, careful editing and flattened exports that other apps can read.
- Add Lightroom if you shoot RAW, edit many paintings, or need masks and repeatable presets.
- Use Canva when the final result needs typography, a layout, or an event graphic.
- Use Photoshop Express for fast portrait cleanup, stickers, text, and collages.
- Use VSCO selectively for mood-driven posts, not color-critical documentation.
- Check Google Photos first for a quick correction on an image already in your library.
A simple workflow for photographing finished paintings
- Photograph in even light and keep the phone parallel to the artwork. Editing cannot fully repair glare or severe perspective distortion.
- Correct geometry first with Perspective or Crop.
- Set white balance and exposure before changing saturation. Compare the screen with the physical painting under neutral light.
- Use selective masks or local adjustments for the wall and background rather than altering the colors of the artwork.
- Remove only distractions that are not part of the painting. Over-aggressive AI removal can create obvious smears around edges.
- Export a high-quality master and a separate web copy. Do not overwrite the original photograph.
- Open the exported file in the app where it will be published. This catches color shifts, missing edits, and incorrect cropping before the post goes live.
FAQ
What is the best completely free photo editor for Android in 2025?
Snapseed is the best general choice. Google Play lists more than 30 tools and no subscription, in-app purchases, ads, or watermarks. Use its Export option when you need a flattened JPEG that other apps can read reliably.
Which Android photo editor is best for photographing paintings?
Lightroom is the strongest choice for RAW files, masks, presets, and consistent corrections across a series. Snapseed is the better free alternative for careful manual edits.
Why do my Snapseed edits sometimes disappear in another app?
Save and Save a copy can preserve Snapseed’s editable edit stack. Some third-party apps cannot interpret that stack. In Snapseed, use Export to create a flattened JPEG before sending the image to Instagram, messaging, or another editor.
Are Canva and Lightroom AI tools free?
Not necessarily. Both apps offer some free functionality but place at least some advanced, AI, cloud, or precision features behind paid plans or other requirements. Check the feature label and current subscription screen before relying on it.
The Bottom Line
For most painters, install Snapseed first: it covers accurate everyday corrections without a subscription or watermark. Choose Lightroom for RAW and repeatable professional work, Canva for designed social graphics, and Photoshop Express for quick retouching and collages. Use VSCO for atmosphere and Google Photos for convenience—but keep mood filters and AI removals away from images whose paint colors need to remain faithful.
