Better Homes & Gardens currently lists 66 numbered pumpkin-design entries, ranging from beginner-friendly smiling faces and simple animals to etched botanicals, classic monsters, silhouettes, and prop-based porch displays. Open the current BHG collection to choose a design, then use the matching PDF links and carving workflow below.

One important clarification: 66 entries does not mean 66 separate PDF files. Some designs share a multi-pattern packet, while others are decorating concepts without an individual download link visible on the live page. The collection was checked on August 9, 2026; BHG identifies the page as updated September 16, 2025.

What the pattern lines mean

In the BHG PDFs, solid lines generally mark areas to cut completely through. Dotted lines mark areas to etch or scrape rather than remove entirely. Etching removes the outer skin, and sometimes a shallow layer of flesh, so the area glows more softly while leaving more structural support in the pumpkin. Confirm the key on the individual PDF before cutting, especially for shared packets.

How to print and resize a stencil

  1. Open the original PDF. Use the download link from the BHG page or the matching file above rather than relying on a mirror.
  2. Measure the usable face. Measure the relatively smooth area where the design will sit—not the entire circumference of the pumpkin.
  3. Print a test copy. In the print dialog, choose the printer’s scale or custom percentage option. Use a smaller percentage to reduce the design and a larger percentage to enlarge it. “Fit to page” is convenient but may not produce the size you need.
  4. Check margins and bridges. The entire pattern should fit with enough paper around it to tape securely. Thin connections between cutouts must remain strong enough to support the pumpkin wall.
  5. Do not resize blindly. BHG specifically warns against enlarging or reducing the honeycomb design because its repeated openings can compromise the pumpkin. Highly detailed patterns such as Cat in the Moon, Happy Halloween, and Trick-or-Treat also deserve a structural check before enlargement.
  6. Trim and attach. Leave a border around the design, cut away excess paper so it conforms to the curve, and tape it tightly to the pumpkin.

If a file does not open, try opening the direct URL in a new browser tab, downloading it instead of previewing it, or using another PDF viewer. If the individual link is missing, that is likely an idea entry or a design inside a shared packet—not evidence that a hidden PDF should be copied from an unofficial mirror.

Carve, etch, paint, or embellish?

Method Appearance Structural effect Typical tools Display tendency
Full cut-through Brightest light and strongest traditional jack-o’-lantern effect Removes the most pumpkin wall, so delicate bridges can break Serrated carving saw, pin, craft knife Usually shorter-lived than an uncut or etched pumpkin
Etching Soft, detailed glow with visible daytime texture Leaves more wall intact Gouge, rotary tool, or craft knife May last longer than full carving, depending on weather and condition
Drilling Even dots, stars, or geometric highlights Creates controlled holes but can weaken repeated patterns Drill and appropriately sized bit Variable; inspect the pumpkin for cracks
Painting Strong daytime color and crisp graphic shapes Does not cut the wall Exterior craft paint, stencil, brushes Often the better choice for an extended fall display
Embellishing Three-dimensional, theatrical, or whimsical Depends on drilling, adhesives, and added weight Beads, props, wire, adhesive, paint, rotary tool Variable; protect from rain and wind
Artificial pumpkin Reusable carved or painted decoration Depends entirely on the material Manufacturer-approved tools Long-lasting, provided it is specifically made to be carved

For etched patterns, complete the etching before nearby full cut-through sections. BHG’s pattern instructions use that order to reduce accidental breakage. For a more visible etched glow, the Wild Things pattern packet recommends scraping at least ½ inch of flesh from the inside behind the etched area. Use that depth as packet-specific guidance, not as a universal requirement for every pumpkin.

The reliable carving workflow

1. Pick a sound, stable pumpkin

Choose a firm pumpkin with an intact stem, a stable flat bottom, and no soft spots, holes, bruises, or visible rot. A flat face is easiest for detailed patterns; a tall pumpkin suits vertical designs such as Cactus, Witch, or Haunted Tree; a bumpy pumpkin is better for broad silhouettes or paint than for precise geometry. Do not lift or carry a pumpkin by its stem. See Illinois Extension’s pumpkin-selection guidance.

2. Set up a controlled work area

Work on a solid, immovable surface covered with newspaper, cardboard, or a washable covering. Keep the pumpkin from rolling. Assemble the printed pattern, tape, washable marker, straight pin or stencil poker, scoop, small serrated saw, and detail tool before beginning.

3. Open the pumpkin

A top opening is familiar and makes the lid easy to lift. Cut a notch so the lid returns to the same position. A bottom opening gives more room for scooping and avoids a lid shrinking and falling inside; BHG explains the bottom-cutting method here. A back opening is another option when you want to preserve the front surface and position an LED light behind the design.

4. Scoop and thin the interior

Remove seeds and stringy pulp thoroughly. Scrape the wall thinner behind large etched areas so light can pass through, but do not make narrow bridges fragile. Save seeds before using any preservative or displaying the pumpkin outdoors. Do not put pumpkin pulp into a garbage disposal; BHG specifically warns against it.

5. Transfer the design

Tape the printed pattern flat. For broad outlines, trace with a washable marker. For detailed patterns, prick along the lines with a straight pin, pushpin, nail, or stencil poker. Space pinholes closely around curves. Remove the paper before cutting, but keep it nearby as a reference.

6. Cut from the center outward

Start with enclosed interior details, then work toward the outside. Use slow, controlled sawing motions, cut away from your body, and avoid twisting the blade. Divide large sections into smaller pieces and push pieces outward from inside when possible. Utah State Extension recommends steady sawing and a center-out approach.

7. Finish and light it

Brush away scraps, wipe the exterior, and check every bridge before inserting a light. A battery-operated LED tea light, small flashlight, or glow stick is the default choice for a porch. Do not use a hot bulb inside a pumpkin.

Safety rules for carving and displaying

Adults handle sharp and powered tools

Children can choose the pattern, help resize and tape the paper, trace with washable marker, scoop pulp with a spoon, sort or wash seeds, paint an uncarved pumpkin, and arrange finished decorations. Adults should handle carving knives, serrated saws, drills, rotary tools, and candles. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends that adults do the carving.

Use battery lighting carefully

Battery-operated lights remove the open-flame risk, but they do not remove every battery hazard. Button-cell batteries can cause severe injury or death if swallowed. In April 2026, CPSC recalled a Halloween pumpkin-carving kit because its tea lights had accessible button batteries. Choose lights with a secured battery compartment, keep loose batteries away from children, and check the CPSC recall notice when relevant.

If you use a candle

LED lights are safer, particularly around children, costumes, dry leaves, corn stalks, paper, fabric, railings, and wooden porches. If you use a real candle, never leave it unattended, keep it away from combustible decorations and traffic paths, and follow fire-safety guidance from NFPA and the U.S. Fire Administration.

How long will a carved pumpkin last?

There is no dependable universal lifespan. Pumpkin condition, temperature, rain, humidity, insects, sunlight, and handling all matter. BHG recommends carving about two or three days before Halloween because carved pumpkins soften quickly. University of Minnesota Extension also warns that warm weather can accelerate mold and collapse.

For a fall display that needs to last longer, choose paint, shallow etching, or an artificial pumpkin made specifically for carving. Keep the stem and top intact when practical, place the pumpkin in shade or a cool sheltered location, and bring it indoors during heavy rain, heat, or freezing weather. Etching may last longer than full cut-through carving because more of the wall remains, but it is not a guarantee.

Petroleum jelly on exposed cut or etched surfaces is discussed by Illinois Extension and Utah State Extension as a way to slow moisture loss. Illinois Extension gives a weather-dependent estimate of roughly seven to ten days for some carved pumpkins. Treat that as an estimate, not a promise.

Bleach recipes vary among related sources, including different BHG pages and extension guidance. Rather than combining those formulas into one universal recipe, prioritize carving close to Halloween, thorough cleaning, cool shade, and petroleum jelly. If you follow a named source’s bleach recommendation, use that source’s stated dilution, follow the bleach label, ventilate the area, keep the solution away from children and pets, and treat the pumpkin as decorative—not edible.

Can you roast the seeds?

Yes, provided the seeds are separated and prepared before the pumpkin is treated with any preservative or displayed outside. Remove the stringy pulp, rinse the seeds, and use a food-safe roasting recipe. Do not eat seeds or pulp that have contacted bleach, petroleum jelly, paint, glue, or other decorative materials.

Adapting the designs for artificial pumpkins

Use only a foam or molded pumpkin that the manufacturer specifically identifies as carveable. Ordinary decorative foam may crumble, melt, release unpleasant dust, or damage tools. Test a hidden area first, follow the product instructions, and use the tool recommended for that material. Artificial pumpkins are especially useful for designs such as Haunted Tree, Honeycomb, Cat in the Moon, or Bead-Dazzled that you want to reuse, but the pattern may need resizing to the artificial pumpkin’s face.

Make the porch look intentional

Several pumpkins look better when they share one visual language. Choose one dominant design and two or three supporting designs rather than placing 10 unrelated faces in a row.

  • Friendly entry: Put Wide Smile or Round-Face at eye level, with Gather and painted botanical pumpkins on lower steps.
  • Classic Halloween: Combine Frankenstein or Witch with Bat, Vampire, and a low Haunted Tree or Tombstone design.
  • Natural harvest: Pair Fall Leaves, Monstera, Cactus, or Succulent with uncarved painted pumpkins and gourds.
  • Animal grouping: Use Owl, Puppy, Cat, Chicken, or Deer at different heights, keeping the lighting color consistent.
  • High-drama focal point: Give Celestial, Cat in the Moon, Crow and Tree, or Sugar Skull the largest pumpkin and keep neighboring designs simpler.
  • Longer display: Paint or etch most of the arrangement, then add one freshly carved jack-o’-lantern close to Halloween.

Use crates or sturdy outdoor-safe risers to create height, but make sure every pumpkin is stable and does not narrow the walking path. Keep lights consistent—warm white LEDs for a traditional display or matching colored lights for a playful painted arrangement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there really 66 separate pumpkin-stencil PDFs?

No. The current BHG page has 66 numbered entries, but some entries share the flora packet or Wild Things packet. Others are decorating ideas with no individual visible download link.

Which BHG stencil is easiest for a first-time carver?

Start with Wide Smile, Round-Face, Cyclops, Missing-Teeth, Smiley Face, Silly Face, or Bucktooth. BHG specifically describes Wide Smile as beginner-friendly, Round-Face as suitable for first-time carvers, and Cyclops as beginner-friendly because it does not require exact symmetry.

What do solid and dotted stencil lines mean?

On the BHG PDFs, solid lines generally indicate areas to cut all the way through. Dotted lines generally indicate areas to etch or scrape. Check the key on the individual file before starting, especially when using a shared packet.

Should I cut the top or bottom of the pumpkin?

Both work. A top opening is traditional and can be keyed with a notch. A bottom opening makes scooping easier and helps prevent a lid from shrinking and falling inside. BHG explains the bottom-cut method in its pumpkin-cleaning guide.

How close to Halloween should I carve?

Carve roughly two or three days before Halloween for the best chance of a firm, presentable jack-o’-lantern. Weather can shorten or extend that window, so etch, paint, or use an artificial carveable pumpkin when the display must last longer.

Can children carve these pumpkins?

Children can choose, trace, scoop, paint, sort seeds, and arrange the display, but adults should handle knives, carving saws, drills, rotary tools, and candles. Use battery lighting and supervise every stage.

How do I make an etched pumpkin glow?

Scrape the inside thinner behind the etched area while leaving the surrounding wall structurally sound. The BHG Wild Things packet recommends scraping at least ½ inch of flesh behind etched sections for more light transmission; that instruction is specific to that packet, not a requirement for every pattern.

Can I use the stencils on a foam pumpkin?

Only if the manufacturer says the pumpkin is made for carving. Ordinary foam décor may crumble or react poorly to cutting tools. Test the material and follow its instructions before transferring a detailed pattern.

Can I sell or redistribute the downloaded patterns?

Do not assume so. Free download does not equal public-domain or commercial-use permission. Link to the original source rather than rehosting, selling, or redistributing the files unless you have explicit permission.

What should I do if a PDF link fails?

Try opening the direct PDF URL in a new tab, downloading rather than previewing it, or using another PDF viewer. If the BHG entry has no individual link, look for it inside the shared flora or Wild Things packet; do not assume an unofficial mirror is authorized.

The Bottom Line

For the quickest successful project, choose a firm pumpkin, print the pattern at a size that fits its usable face, follow the solid-line and dotted-line key, etch before cutting nearby sections, and use a battery-operated LED light. Wide Smile, Owl, Cactus, Cyclops, and Round-Face are strong starting points; Haunted Tree, Honeycomb, Cat in the Moon, Trick-or-Treat, and Bead-Dazzled are better reserved for careful, experienced work. Carve close to Halloween, keep the finished pumpkin out of heat and rain, and remember that the 66 entries include shared PDFs and decorating ideas—not 66 independent files.
