The five color families that most clearly shaped 2025 were warm edible neutrals, butter yellow, cherry red and oxblood, moody indigo and purple, and earthy greens. They appeared across paint forecasts, interiors, fashion, beauty, retail, and digital culture—but no single shade won universal agreement. Pantone selected Mocha Mousse, WGSN and Coloro selected Future Dusk, and paint companies promoted different choices, including Cinnamon Slate, Rumors, and Sherwin-Williams’ nine-color Color Capsule.
This is therefore a synthesis rather than an official ranking. For homeowners, the practical lesson is simpler: 2025 made color more livable. Stark white gave way to oat, bright yellow softened into butter, red deepened into oxblood, purple became moodier, and green moved toward olive, dill, sage, and moss.
The five 2025 color trends at a glance
| Color family | Named reference | Best painting applications | Low-commitment starting point | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Warm edible neutrals | Alpine Oat, Mocha Mousse, chocolate, clay brown | Living rooms, bedrooms, libraries, kitchens, natural-material schemes | Oat-colored walls, brown furniture, leather, textiles | A flat or muddy beige result |
| Butter yellow | Butter Yellow, KitchenAid Butter | Kitchens, breakfast rooms, trim, ceilings, small accents | A single wall, door, lamp, or painted cabinet | Looking childish or too yellow under warm bulbs |
| Cherry red and oxblood | Cherry Red, Rumors, ruby, burgundy, wine | Dining rooms, studies, doors, cabinetry, upholstery | Front door, artwork, textiles, one piece of furniture | Feeling heavy across a large matte surface |
| Moody indigo and purple | Aura Indigo, Future Dusk, Cinnamon Slate, plum | Bedrooms, powder rooms, ceilings, libraries, feature joinery | Accessories, a powder room, or an alcove | Shifting unexpectedly blue, pink, gray, or brown |
| Earthy greens | Dill, olive, sage, chartreuse, pear, moss | Kitchens, studies, cabinetry, trim, garden rooms | Sage or olive on a door, cabinet, or accent wall | Yellow-green becoming too intense at scale |
The shades in this table are related families, not interchangeable paint colors. A digital hex value can help establish direction, but it is not a paint formula or a guaranteed match between brands.

The cleanest five-color framework came from Pinterest’s 2025 Palette: Cherry Red, Butter Yellow, Aura Indigo, Dill Green, and Alpine Oat. Pinterest based that palette on color-related searches and dominant-color Pin saves. Its published dataset covers global, English-language Pinterest activity from September 2022 through August 2024, so the figures are platform trend signals rather than US-only retail sales or a universal consumer survey. See the Pinterest 2025 Palette announcement and the accompanying palette data sheet.
Those five colors were then checked against independent types of evidence: Pantone and WGSN/Coloro forecasts, paint-company launches, fashion forecasting, interior-design reporting, a designer survey, and product launches. That matters because a forecast, a search spike, a runway appearance, and a paint-company marketing program measure different things.
- Cross-category reach: The family appears in at least two areas such as fashion, interiors, beauty, retail, or branding.
- Independent convergence: More than one source points in the same general direction.
- Practical usefulness: The color works as either a small accent or a substantial surface.
- Material behavior: The trend survives the differences between paint, fabric, leather, makeup, photography, and screens.
- Seasonal durability: The family has some use beyond one runway season.
1. Warm edible neutrals: Alpine Oat, Mocha Mousse, and chocolate brown
Warm brown and creamy oat were the most durable underlying color story of 2025. This was not one exact brown. It ranged from pale cream and beige through camel and clay to espresso, truffle, and near-black chocolate. The common thread was a move away from cold gray and stark white toward colors that feel warmer and more material-led.

Pinterest’s named shade was Alpine Oat, represented in its digital palette by #F0E7DA. Pinterest reported searches for beige tiles bathroom up 120%, beige aesthetic room up 35%, and neutral outfits women up 145%.
At the darker end, Pantone selected Mocha Mousse, PANTONE 17-1230, as its official Color of the Year. Pantone described the warm brown through ideas of comfort, richness, and everyday pleasure in its 2025 Color of the Year announcement. It is more specific and generally deeper than Alpine Oat; neither should be treated as the other’s paint equivalent.
Interior forecasts reinforced the family. ELLE Decor highlighted truffle brown, while Benjamin Moore’s 2025 palette included Leather Saddle Brown and Chowning’s Tan. Sherwin-Williams’ 2025 Color Capsule ranged from deep brown to sandy beige with Grounded, Clove, and Malabar. These are separate proprietary systems, but their overlap is meaningful: brown was not merely a single brand’s pick.
Why it mattered in interiors
Brown and oat can act as the quiet structure around stronger colors. A warm cream wall gives red, yellow, green, or purple somewhere to land; a chocolate-painted library or piece of cabinetry supplies drama without the hardness of black. The family also works naturally with wood, leather, linen, plaster, travertine, stone, and woven materials.

How to use it as paint
- Use a pale oat or warm beige on the larger wall surfaces of a living room, hallway, bedroom, or kitchen when you want an alternative to white.
- Use medium clay, camel, or tan on trim, a reading nook, a ceiling, or built-in shelving rather than applying the same beige everywhere.
- Reserve deep chocolate and espresso for a study, dining room, library, lower cabinetry, interior doors, or a single feature wall.
- Balance brown paint with variation in texture: wood grain, linen, brushed metal, stone, or a higher-sheen accent. A room where every surface is the same flat beige can look dull even when the color itself is attractive.
Useful combinations include Alpine Oat with cherry red, Mocha brown with butter yellow, chocolate with pale pink, oat with dill green, and deep brown with Aura Indigo.
What can go wrong
Warm neutrals are particularly dependent on undertone and light. A pale oat can appear cream, yellow, pink, or gray depending on the bulbs, floor, furnishings, and neighboring whites. Browns can be red-brown, yellow-brown, gray-brown, or almost black; they will not all produce the same atmosphere. Sample the exact paint rather than choosing from a color name alone.

- Use for a variety of indoor and outdoor project surfaces including wood, metal, plaster, masonry or unglazed ceramic
- Water-based acrylic formula is low odor, resist chips and provides long-lasting protection
- Covers up to 120 sq ft and dries to touch in 30 minutes for quick project completion
- Semi-gloss finish minimizes surface imperfections, goes on smoothly and provides excellent hide
- Prior to application sand surfaces with 180/200 grit sandpaper, then wash with a degreaser, allow the surface to dry and apply paint
2. Butter yellow: a softer alternative to white
Butter yellow was arguably the clearest cross-category breakout of 2025. Its appeal was not the highlighter intensity of lemon yellow. It was creamy, pale, nostalgic, and soft enough to behave almost like a neutral in the right room.
The named shade and evidence
Pinterest represented Butter Yellow with #FFEDA8 and reported searches for butter yellow up 115%, yellow outfit inspo up 225%, and butter yellow nails up 1,825%. Those figures are Pinterest’s own search-growth statistics, not paint-sales figures.
Fashion evidence pointed in the same direction. Vogue Business reported that EDITED found yellow represented less than 2% of SS24 colors, while July 2024 yellow sell-outs were 106% above 2023 levels. Heuritech projected a 5% increase in yellow prominence in both the EU and US for SS25 among consumers aged 16–45. Butter-like yellow appeared in collections from Gucci, Stella McCartney, and João Maraschin; the Vogue Business forecast provides the category and geographic qualification.
The home-design signal was unusually visible too. KitchenAid named Butter its 2025 Color of the Year for its products, describing a soft yellow with a creamy satin finish and associating it with nostalgia. That is a commercial product launch, not proof of a universal psychological response, but it shows how the shade moved beyond clothing into kitchens and appliances. Vogue later reported butter yellow in furniture, wallpaper, home accents, and spring makeup.
How to use it as paint
- Try it in a kitchen, breakfast room, mudroom, or dining nook where its warmth supports the room’s domestic function.
- Use it on a door, cabinet island, shelf backing, lampshade, or trim if a whole yellow room feels too committed.
- Pair it with warm white, chocolate brown, cherry red, indigo, or olive rather than limiting it to pastel pink and novelty décor.
- A slightly dusty, creamy, or greened yellow generally feels more sophisticated and more forgiving than pure lemon.
Butter yellow also works well on a ceiling or the inside of a bookcase, where it creates a noticeable color moment without placing the shade beside every complexion or furnishing in the room.
What can go wrong
Pale yellow changes quickly under warm bulbs and beside cool whites. It can look brighter, greener, or more beige than expected. On a wall, the surrounding floor and cabinetry can either calm it down or make it look more saturated. It may also be less comfortable close to the face for some people in clothing; accessories and layering solve that problem more easily than trying to make one yellow work for everyone.
3. Cherry red, oxblood, ruby, and wine
Red became a flexible family rather than a single loud statement. Bright cherry references appeared in fashion, accessories, beauty, food, cocktails, and playful décor. Deeper oxblood, ruby, burgundy, and wine carried the same energy into libraries, dining rooms, leather, upholstery, tailoring, and autumn interiors.
The named shade and evidence
Pinterest’s Cherry Red swatch was #74070E, notably a dark red rather than a primary scarlet. Its palette reported cherry vibe up 325%, cherry martini up 80%, and cherry outfit up 150%. Pinterest later said that its Cherry Coded trend expanded commercially, with cherry martini searches up 130% year over year and outbound clicks on cherry décor Pins up 100% year over year. These later figures come from Pinterest’s own retrospective and should be read as platform measurements, not independent retail data; the Pinterest Predicts methodology page gives that context.
Interior evidence was also substantial. Vogue reported that the share of designers in the 1stDibs Designer Trends survey intending to use dark red rose to 20%, compared with 12% two years earlier. Behr selected Rumors, a deep ruby red, as its 2025 Color of the Year. Behr also reported that 76% of Americans surveyed would consider painting a room or wall red; because the study was commissioned and reported by Behr, it should be treated as brand research rather than a neutral national estimate. See the Behr announcement.

- Ready to use, pre-mixed door and trim paint offers a fresh new look on interior or exterior metal, wood and fiberglass
- Water-based paint formula emits less odor and withstands fading for a long lasting finish
- Dries to the touch in 45 minutes, up to 3X faster than traditional oil-based paints
- Durable, chip resistant coating provides ultimate protection with modern curb appeal
- Beautiful satin door paint is available in 6 pre-mix color options for the perfect look
How to use it as paint
- Use oxblood or ruby in a dining room, library, study, bar area, or media room where a deeper atmosphere is welcome.
- Paint a front door, interior door, island, built-in, or piece of furniture if a red room is too much.
- Use bright cherry as the accent and a darker wine red as the architectural color; the two can coexist without being identical.
- Pair red with Alpine Oat for contrast, butter yellow for warmth, olive for an earthy scheme, pale pink for softness, or chocolate brown for a rich tonal interior.
Red is especially effective when its finish and material are doing some of the work. Lacquer, polished wood, velvet, leather, and reflective tile can make deep red feel luxurious; a large, uniform matte wall can feel much heavier.

Cherry red, siren red, ruby, oxblood, burgundy, and wine are related but not synonymous. Warm light can push red toward orange; cool neighboring blues can make it appear more purple. A red chosen from a small screen swatch may also look dramatically more intense across four walls. Vogue’s summer 2025 coverage explicitly concluded that no single color ruled every area of fashion, so red should not be described as the universal winner.
4. Moody indigo and purple: Aura Indigo, Future Dusk, plum, and mauve
Purple moved from novelty accent to a serious, atmospheric design family. The lighter end was lavender and Aura Indigo; the darker end included Future Dusk, aubergine, plum, mauve, and heathered purple-brown. This range allowed purple to operate as a pastel, a jewel tone, or an alternative to charcoal and black.
The named shades and evidence
Pinterest’s Aura Indigo was represented by #B0A6DF. Searches for purple lavender aesthetic rose 175%, purple core rose 120%, and lilac shirt outfit men rose 100% in its 2025 Palette data.
WGSN and Coloro selected Future Dusk, Coloro 129-35-18, as their 2025 Color of the Year. They positioned the deep blue-purple between blue and violet and identified applications in classic pieces, investment products, beauty, consumer technology, and immersive digital contexts. Their broader SS25 forecast also included Transcendent Pink, Aquatic Awe, Sunset Coral, and Ray Flower. Read the WGSN and Coloro announcement for the distinction between the named color and the wider forecast palette.
Paint forecasts provided further support. Benjamin Moore selected Cinnamon Slate 2113-40, described as a heathered plum with velvety brown. Sherwin-Williams included Mauve Finery SW 6282 in its 2025 Color Capsule. ELLE Decor also observed purple recurring across paint-company forecasts, fashion, furniture, and interiors.
How to use it as paint
- Use a pale lilac or Aura Indigo-inspired color in a bedroom, dressing room, nursery, or creative studio.
- Try plum, mauve-brown, or Future Dusk-inspired paint in a powder room, library, dining room, or alcove.
- Paint the ceiling or the back of shelving for atmosphere without making every wall dark.
- Warm purple with oat, cream, or brown if a cool white makes it look clinical. Pair it with butter yellow for a more energetic contrast, or olive for a botanical, grounded scheme.
Indigo and plum can deliver drama without the visual severity of black. They also connect naturally with romantic, gothic, Art Deco, celestial, and digital aesthetics, which helps explain their reach across interiors, beauty, fashion, and technology.
What can go wrong
Purple has unusually changeable undertones. A shade can read blue, gray, pink, or brown as the light changes. Pale lilac may wash out beside a cool white; deep plum can make a low-light room appear smaller when used on every wall. Always judge the exact paint in the room rather than assuming that a Pinterest lavender swatch represents a dark plum or a blue-purple forecast color.
5. Earthy greens: dill, olive, sage, chartreuse, pear, and moss
Green remained broad and commercially useful in 2025, but it moved beyond generic emerald. The more characteristic versions were food-inspired dill, grounded olive, soft sage, moss, pear, and sharper chartreuse. Together they covered quiet, natural, nostalgic, and high-energy interpretations of green.
Rank #4
- RUST-OLEUM PAINT WALL LINEN WHITE GA 380220
The named shade and evidence
Pinterest’s Dill Green swatch was #4E6813. Its palette reported searches for green kitchen designs up 155%, green vibe up 80%, and pickle margarita up 100%. The food reference may sound playful, but it illustrates how Pinterest connected color discovery to its Pickle Fix and Terra Futura trend groupings. It is search behavior, not evidence that every kitchen was repainted dill green.
Fashion forecasting also supported softer greens. Vogue Business cited Heuritech’s projection that sage would grow 10% on Instagram in the EU and 9% in the US among 16–25-year-olds during July–September 2025 compared with the same period in 2024.
On the paint side, Sherwin-Williams’ 2025 Color Capsule included Bosc Pear SW 6390 and Chartreuse SW 0073. Interior coverage also identified vibrant olive as a requested color for studies and color-drenched rooms. This range is why green is best understood as a family rather than a single trend shade.
How to use it as paint
- Choose sage for a quieter update to a bedroom, hallway, bathroom, or kitchen.
- Choose olive or moss for a study, cabinetry, mudroom, library, or room with wood and natural fibers.
- Use dill or chartreuse as a sharper statement on a door, trim, furniture piece, alcove, or small room.
- Pair green with Alpine Oat, cream, chocolate brown, butter yellow, or cherry red. Plum and chartreuse create a more assertive, fashion-led combination.
Green is often easy to place beside wood, stone, plants, brass, and woven finishes. But green is not automatically sustainable, calming, or environmentally responsible; those associations depend on the brand, context, and actual materials, not the color alone.

What can go wrong
Dill, olive, sage, moss, and chartreuse have different proportions of yellow, blue, gray, and brown. A yellow-green can become aggressive on a large wall, while a blue-green may feel cold beside gray or cool white. Olive and moss generally tolerate large interior surfaces more easily than acidic chartreuse, but the room’s light and fixed finishes remain decisive.
Which 2025 family is right for your room?
Choose by the kind of change you want rather than by the label of the trend.
- For a quiet, durable update: Start with Alpine Oat, warm beige, sage, or olive.
- For softness and optimism: Try butter yellow on a kitchen wall, ceiling, cabinet, or small furnishing.
- For a confident focal point: Use cherry red, oxblood, or ruby on a door, dining room, library, or built-in.
- For drama without black: Choose Future Dusk, plum, aubergine, or Cinnamon Slate-inspired purple.
- For a nature-led statement: Use dill, moss, or chartreuse, balancing stronger greens with oat or brown.
Room direction matters. A naturally bright room may support a deeper brown, red, or purple; a dim room may need a lighter oat, sage, or creamy yellow—or a deliberate dark-room treatment with carefully chosen lighting. The point is not that one orientation forbids a color, but that the same sample will not behave identically in every space.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to test a trend color before painting
- Identify the undertone. Compare the sample with your flooring, countertops, trim, upholstery, and the white already in the room. Decide whether it leans yellow, red, blue, gray, or brown.
- Sample the actual paint. Pinterest hex values, Pantone codes, Coloro codes, and another paint brand’s named color are references—not instructions for mixing an identical can of paint.
- Use a large sample. A tiny chip cannot show whether a saturated color will overwhelm the room or whether a pale neutral will look yellow.
- Move or wrap the sample. Benjamin Moore recommends viewing colors in the actual room from morning through evening, under natural and artificial light, and wrapping samples around corners so they can be judged in both brighter and darker areas. Its paint-sample guide explains the process.
- Check the bulbs and fixed finishes. Sherwin-Williams notes that room direction, bulb temperature, undertones, and surrounding colors can make a paint appear warmer or cooler. Its undertone guide is useful when a color shifts unexpectedly.
- Test the intended scale. A color that works on a cabinet door may need adjustment before it covers four walls; conversely, a pale color that looks weak on a small card may become lively at room scale.
For high-commitment shades such as deep red, indigo, chocolate, and chartreuse, start with a door, cabinetry, an alcove, a powder room, or an accent wall if you are uncertain. Oat, cream, sage, and soft yellow are usually more forgiving choices for larger surfaces, although no color is universally safe in every light.

- Fashion: Use trend colors first in accessories, shoes, bags, knitwear, or layering pieces. Oat and butter yellow are easier entry points; cherry red works well as a focal point; purple benefits from warm neutrals; green must be selected by undertone.
- Beauty: Butter yellow can become a nail, liner, or inner-corner accent. Cherry and oxblood work as lips or manicures. Purple can be tested through blush, eyeshadow, or nails. Vogue’s summer makeup coverage recommended small areas and forgiving cream or frosted textures for strong colors; see its makeup color coverage.
- Branding and content: Use the Pinterest hex values as digital starting points only. Check text contrast, avoid assuming color meanings are universal, and use one dominant color with a supporting neutral and a restrained accent rather than putting all five at equal intensity.
What was not universal in 2025
Several other colors remained visible. Powder pink continued beyond the Barbie-pink moment in softer, more wearable forms; Vogue reported its presence across SS25 and FW25 fashion. Blue remained a perennial, ranging from pale and crisp to cobalt and blue-purple. WGSN and Coloro included Sunset Coral and Ray Flower in their SS25 key-color forecast, but the evidence reviewed here was less consistent for coral than for the five families above. Ray Flower was also brighter and more radiant than commercially accessible butter yellow. See the Vogue summer 2025 color report and the fall/winter 2025 report.
The disagreement between annual color selections is not a contradiction. Pantone’s Mocha Mousse, WGSN and Coloro’s Future Dusk, Benjamin Moore’s Cinnamon Slate, Behr’s Rumors, and Pinterest’s five-color palette were created for different audiences, materials, and commercial purposes. Annual color programs are forecasting products and marketing tools, not decisions made by a single governing body.
There is also a difference between visibility and adoption. A color can be highly visible in runway coverage, saved frequently on Pinterest, or featured in a product launch without becoming the most purchased paint color. Interiors also move more slowly than fashion. This is why the strongest conclusion is not that one shade won, but that several categories softened bold color into livable forms: oat instead of stark white, butter instead of bright yellow, oxblood instead of primary red, and mauve instead of saturated purple.

Frequently Asked Questions
Was Mocha Mousse the official color of 2025?
Mocha Mousse, PANTONE 17-1230, was Pantone’s Color of the Year. It was not a universally recognized industry-wide color. WGSN and Coloro selected Future Dusk, while Pinterest published five trend colors and paint companies made their own selections.
Which 2025 trend color is safest for a whole room?
Warm oat, cream, sage, and muted olive are generally easier starting points for large surfaces than deep red, dark purple, or chartreuse. The safest choice still depends on the room’s lighting, undertones, flooring, trim, and furnishings, so test the actual paint in place before committing.
Can I match a Pinterest hex value to a can of paint?
Not directly. Pinterest’s values such as #F0E7DA and #FFEDA8 are digital references. Paint is affected by pigment, finish, substrate, lighting, and surrounding colors. Use the hex value to identify a direction, then choose and test a real paint sample.
How should I use a bold trend color without repainting the whole room?
Apply it to a front door, interior door, cabinet, island, built-in, alcove, ceiling, powder room, or single accent wall. You can also introduce the family through upholstery, artwork, rugs, curtains, or accessories before choosing a larger painted area.

The defining 2025 paint story was not one winning shade but a more livable approach to color. Warm oat and brown supplied the foundation; butter yellow added softness; cherry and oxblood added energy; indigo and purple supplied atmosphere; and earthy greens connected rooms to botanical and material-rich palettes. Choose the family that suits your room, test its undertone and lighting at full scale, and treat trend names as useful directions—not promises of an exact paint match.
