Yes—Paint in Windows 11 is a usable basic image editor, not just a drawing app. Open a picture to crop, resize, rotate, flip, add text and shapes, draw on it, or save a copy; layers and background removal are available in some builds. Paint is best for quick edits and simple compositions, not advanced photo correction, batch processing, or professional retouching.
Paint’s buttons and optional features can vary by app build, Windows version, device, account, region, and rollout. Microsoft’s Paint release notes track Insider versions and do not guarantee that every retail Windows 11 PC has the latest listed build.

For a quick label, arrow, crop, or size change, Paint is often the simplest choice.

Microsoft’s Paint overview describes the app’s drawing, selection, text, crop, resize, rotate, layer, and background-removal capabilities.
1. Open a picture and protect the original
- Select Start.
- Type Paint and press Enter.
- Select File > Open.
- Choose the picture and select Open.
Before editing an important image, select File > Save as, choose a new filename, and work on that copy. This gives you a fallback if a crop, resize, background removal, or save changes the result unexpectedly.
2. Crop a picture
- Select Select on the toolbar.
- Choose Rectangular selection.
- Drag around the area you want to keep.
- Select Crop.
- Check the edges, then save the result.
For an irregular region, choose Free-form selection, trace around it, and select Crop. The result outside the traced shape can depend on transparency support and your Paint build; a rectangular crop is more predictable for ordinary photos. Use Undo immediately if you crop the wrong area.
Crop changes what remains; resize changes pixel dimensions. Crop first when framing the subject is the priority. If an exact output dimension matters, check the result after cropping and resizing.
3. Resize a picture
- Click outside any active selection if you intend to resize the whole image.
- Select Resize.
- Choose Percentage or Pixels.
- Keep Maintain aspect ratio enabled for a normal photo.
- Enter the new horizontal or vertical dimension and select OK.
- Use File > Save as to save a copy.
Use pixels for an exact size requirement and percentage for a relative change. Disabling aspect-ratio preservation can stretch faces, circles, or logos. Enlarging a small image does not add detail and can make it soft or pixelated. In some builds, an active selection can affect the operation’s scope, so test on a copy if it is unclear.

4. Rotate or flip a picture
Use the Rotate menu for standard rotations and horizontal or vertical flips. A horizontal flip mirrors the image; check for reversed writing. Some newer or Insider builds may offer additional rotation behavior for selected objects, but do not assume free-angle rotation is available in every retail installation. Check your toolbar and the Paint release notes.
5. Add text, drawings, or shapes
Add text
- Select Text, usually shown as an A.
- Click or drag to make a text box, then type.
- Use the text controls to set font, size, style, alignment, and color.
- Click outside the text box when finished.
Use a contrasting area or a solid shape behind a caption. Finish editing before clicking elsewhere: committed text may become painted pixels rather than an editable text object. If layers are available, place text on a separate layer.

Draw or annotate
- Pencil makes narrow freehand lines; Brushes make broader or stylized strokes.
- Shapes can add lines, arrows, rectangles, circles, and other geometry.
- Fill with color colors an enclosed area; Color picker samples an existing color.
- Eraser removes painted content; Zoom helps with precise work.
For annotations, add a new layer when available, draw marks there, and keep the original image on its own layer. Without layers, save an intermediate copy before drawing over a photo.
6. Remove a background when available
- Open the image and select Remove background if the button is present.
- Let Paint detect the subject.
- Inspect edges closely and correct them if suitable controls are available.
- Save as PNG if you need transparency.
Automated removal may need cleanup around hair, fur, glass, smoke, leaves, thin wires, or low-contrast edges. It is not a substitute for professional masking. For transparency, use a build that supports it, hide the background layer if needed, and check for the checkerboard pattern before saving. JPEG cannot preserve an alpha-transparent background. Microsoft’s layers and transparency announcement describes these capabilities.
7. Use layers for simple compositions
If the Layers panel is available, use separate layers for the original image, text, shapes, and annotations. You can add, reorder, show or hide, duplicate, and merge layers in supported builds. For example, keep a screenshot on the bottom layer and put arrows and labels on layers above it.
Controls such as Hide background, background color, and shortcuts can be build-dependent. Ordinary PNG, JPEG, GIF, and BMP exports generally save the visible image rather than a universally editable layer structure. Keep separate source images or layer exports if you may need to continue editing.

8. Save in the right format
- Select File > Save as.
- Choose a folder and a new filename.
- Select the file type, then select Save.
- Reopen the saved file to check its appearance, dimensions, and transparency.

Keep the original JPEG and save an edited copy under a different name; repeated JPEG saves can add lossy compression. Use a PNG working copy for graphics or repeated edits. Do not assume Paint can edit every format that Windows can open; if a file will not open, try Photos or another editor and keep the original.
Optional AI features
Ordinary cropping, resizing, drawing, and text do not require AI tools. Depending on the build and eligibility, Paint may offer background removal, Image Creator, Cocreator, Generative Erase or Fill, Object Select, or Sticker Generator. Availability can vary by Windows and Paint version, device hardware, account, region, and staged rollout; some features may require supported hardware, sign-in, internet access, or credits. Microsoft’s Copilot+ Paint feature guide and Image Creator guide explain eligibility. A missing AI button does not mean ordinary Paint editing is broken.
When Paint is—and is not—the right editor
Paint is a good fit for one-off crops, size changes, captions, arrows, screenshot markups, and simple cutouts or layer compositions. Use another tool for batch resizing, RAW development, advanced color correction, sophisticated masks, non-destructive retouching, or professional layout. Choose Photos for photo-oriented adjustments such as lighting and color, and a dedicated editor for advanced work.
Troubleshooting
Paint or a tool is missing
- Open Microsoft Store and select Library.
- Select Get updates and install available Paint updates.
- Restart Paint.
- If Paint is damaged or removed, follow Microsoft’s reinstall procedure.
The picture will not open
Download cloud-only files locally, check whether the file opens in Photos, and update Paint. A damaged file, unsupported format, or unusually large image can also be the cause. Keep the original before attempting conversion; Windows codec support and Paint’s own editing support are not identical.
The transparent background saved as white
- Open the Layers panel and hide the background layer if available.
- Confirm the checkerboard indicates transparency.
- Save as PNG, then reopen the file to verify.
If you saved as JPEG, return to the source copy and export a PNG; JPEG cannot preserve transparency.
The picture looks blurry
You may have enlarged it beyond its original resolution, resaved a JPEG several times, or exported at smaller dimensions. Return to the original, resize once where possible, and keep a PNG master for graphics and text.
