Short answer: Midjourney did open its web image generator to everyone in August 2024 and temporarily offered roughly 25 free image generations. That was a limited trial, not a permanent free plan. As of August 10, 2026, Midjourney’s own Free Trials documentation says there is no free trial on midjourney.com or through Discord.
You can still use Midjourney in a browser without operating Discord, but image generation currently requires a paid subscription starting at $10 per month. The only officially documented free trial is for the separate niji·journey mobile app on iOS and Android.
What Midjourney actually announced in August 2024
The headline was based on a real Midjourney announcement, but it combined two related developments that should be kept separate: broader access to the website and a temporary free trial.
Midjourney’s web interface had initially been restricted to selected users and people with previous experience using the service. On August 16, 2024, Midjourney expanded web creation to people who had made at least 10 images. That was an intermediate access step, not universal access.
Then, on August 21, 2024, Midjourney announced that its web experience was open to everyone and that free trials had been temporarily enabled. The company published its official “The web is open to all!” announcement on August 23.
Those were not quite the same promise:
- Website access: Midjourney was moving away from a Discord-first experience and making its browser interface broadly available.
- Free generation: A temporary promotional trial allowed new users to try image creation before subscribing.
Contemporary coverage described the trial as allowing approximately 25 free image generations. The number was reported by outlets including Digital Trends and VentureBeat, based in part on comments from Midjourney founder David Holz in Discord. The company’s short announcement emphasized that the trial was temporary; it did not establish a permanent free tier.

After the allowance was used, users had to subscribe to continue generating images. A report on August 26, 2024, from Tom’s Hardware Italy indicated that the trial had already ended or was no longer generally available.

Is Midjourney free now?
No—not on the website or Discord, according to Midjourney’s current official documentation.
The distinction matters because a visitor can still access parts of the Midjourney website without paying. The Explore area can be used to browse community creations, and existing users may be able to view their previous work or manage their account. Those forms of access are not the same as receiving free generation credits.
Midjourney’s current Free Trials page specifically says that no free trial is currently available on midjourney.com or Discord. It lists a limited trial only for the separate niji·journey app on iOS and Android.

If you cancel a subscription, your existing creations remain accessible, but creating new images requires an active plan. Midjourney explains this in its automatic-renewal guidance.
Can you use Midjourney without Discord?
Yes. You can use Midjourney’s browser interface without operating the Midjourney bot in Discord. The website currently supports signing in with either Google or Discord.
For a new user, the basic path is:
- Go to midjourney.com.
- Select Sign Up or Log In.
- Choose Google or Discord as the sign-in method.
- Open the Create page.
- If the account has no active plan, select a subscription through Midjourney’s subscription process.
- Enter a description in the Imagine bar.
- Press Enter or select the send button.
- Open the resulting image set to access variations, editing, downloads, and organizational tools.
Midjourney’s current Getting Started Guide says that a normal prompt produces a set of four images.

If you used Midjourney through Discord in the past, log in with your Discord account first if you want to preserve access to your old history. Signing in with Google and subscribing to a new account can create a separate Midjourney account, leaving the older Discord-generated history apparently missing.
Midjourney allows users to add the second sign-in method later through Account Settings, but account-linking conflicts can occur if both accounts already contain jobs or subscriptions. Midjourney’s account-login and linking documentation explains the limitation.
What can you do in the current web interface?
The website is more than a replacement for typing commands into Discord. Its current workflow is divided into areas for discovering, creating, and organizing work.
Explore
Explore lets you browse community images and videos, search creations, inspect prompts and settings, and find visually similar work. It can be useful for painters and illustrators researching compositions, lighting, palettes, costume ideas, or visual references—but public visibility and remixing rules apply to the work displayed there.
Create
On Create, the Imagine bar is the main entry point for a prompt. You can watch generations appear, open a result, and then create subtle or strong variations, rerun a prompt, edit an image, or download it.

Organizing and adjusting work
Current website documentation describes tools for viewing, filtering, sorting, downloading, and placing creations into folders. Depending on the selected model and available controls, the settings can include aspect ratio, model or resolution options, stylization, weirdness, variety, GPU mode, and privacy settings.
Because Midjourney’s interface changes, older articles may show controls in different locations or describe an older workflow. The safest current route is the official Website Overview and Creating on Web guides rather than a screenshot from the 2024 trial.
How much does Midjourney cost?
Midjourney’s current listed subscriptions begin at $10 per month. The following prices and allowances are listed in Midjourney’s plan comparison and should be treated as subject to change.

- Midjourney says annual billing provides a 20% discount.
- Additional GPU time is listed at $4 per hour.
- Stealth Mode is available only on Pro and Mega.
“Unlimited” does not mean unlimited Fast-mode generation. It refers to image generation in Relax mode on qualifying plans, which can take longer and is subject to service availability. Midjourney’s Terms of Service also reserve the right to rate-limit the service.
Privacy: Midjourney is public by default
This is one of the most important details for anyone testing the service with painting references or client work: Midjourney creations are generally open by default.
Creations can potentially appear on the Explore page. Midjourney’s privacy documentation explains that Stealth Mode, which hides creations on midjourney.com, is limited to Pro and Mega plans.

Stealth Mode is not an absolute guarantee of secrecy. It does not make an image private from people who already saw it in a shared Discord space. Midjourney’s terms also state that public content can be viewed and remixed by others.
Do not upload confidential client material, unreleased product designs, private photographs, or sensitive personal information unless you understand the exposure, have permission to use the material, and have chosen a plan and workflow appropriate for it. A browser interface may feel private because it resembles a personal creative workspace; Midjourney’s default publication model is different.
Can Midjourney images be used commercially?
Midjourney’s current commercial-use page says that users own the images and videos they create, including after canceling, subject to important exceptions. That is a statement about Midjourney’s contractual terms; it is not a universal guarantee of copyright protection.

The main platform conditions include:
- If you upscale another person’s image, the original creator owns that image and you need permission to use it.
- A business with more than $1 million in annual gross revenue must use a Pro or Mega plan to use creations commercially.
- Using an image commercially does not remove your responsibility for the source material, likenesses, trademarks, or other rights involved in the prompt or uploaded references.
Read Midjourney’s commercial-use guidance before using an output in a client commission, product packaging, book, advertising campaign, or other paid work.
Platform ownership is not the same as copyright
For readers in the United States, Midjourney’s statement that you own your creations and the question of whether an output is protected by copyright are separate issues.
The U.S. Copyright Office has said that purely AI-generated material is not protected by copyright. Human-authored expression, creative selection or arrangement, and creative modifications may qualify for protection. The Office has also said that prompts alone generally do not provide sufficient control over an output under current technology. Accordingly, neither a former free-trial user nor a paid subscriber should assume that every generated image automatically receives enforceable copyright in every country. Local law, the human contribution to the work, and the specific commercial context matter.
What content can you generate?
A free trial—when Midjourney offers one—is not permission to generate anything without restrictions. Midjourney’s current terms require users to be at least 13 and to meet the minimum digital-consent age in their country.

These rules matter just as much during a promotional trial as they do on a paid plan.

The original headline was understandable during the August 2024 promotion, but it is misleading when presented as a current service-status report. Some later pages continue to frame the old opening as if it were a newly available permanent offer. For example, a 2026 article using the same “open to everyone for free” framing conflicts with Midjourney’s current Free Trials page and does not establish a current web allowance from a primary 2026 launch announcement.

One version note before following old tutorials
Midjourney announced V8.2 on July 24, 2026. However, its current Version documentation and help homepage still describe V8.1 as the default. That is a documentation inconsistency.
Do not assume that V8.2 is the default model, or that a setting shown in an older tutorial is still in the same location, without checking the live Create interface immediately before publishing or following model-specific instructions.
Free alternatives if you do not want a Midjourney subscription
If your priority is genuinely free image generation, Midjourney is currently not the simplest choice. The right alternative depends on what “better” means for you: free access, text rendering, privacy, editing, commercial terms, or local control.

As of August 10, 2026, Midjourney’s own documentation says that free trials are unavailable on both midjourney.com and Discord. The web interface remains available without needing to work inside Discord, but generating new images currently requires a paid subscription starting at $10 per month. If you need truly free generations, consider the separately documented niji·journey trial or another provider—but check each service’s limits, privacy defaults, and commercial terms before using it for painting or client work.
